RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Overview and Lesson Plans

PRIMARY
PRE-PRIMARY-YEAR 6
Principles of Primary Religious Education 1

Year Level: 2 Unit Title: Eucharist Student Number: 20161796

Date of Submission: Week 10 Student Name: Phoebe Cumper

PLANNING OVERVIEW
Year Level: Two Unit Title: Eucharist
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit, to come from teacher background information, teaching and learning program (Approx half-
full page)
This year two’s unit, Eucharist, is organised into six content descriptors:
• People show love for one another;

• Jesus showed love for all;

• Jesus is always present with his followers;

• The priest has a special role in the celebration of the Eucharist;

• Through the Eucharist people carry Jesus in their hearts to show love for others;
The aim of the unit is to promote the students’ full, conscious and prepare students for the active participation in celebration of the Eucharist. Students will examine the celebration of
the Eucharist as a memorial sacrifice in the name of love. Their studies will focus on love, and look into the feeding of 5000 and The Last Supper.
The sacrament of Eucharist enables Christians to remember what Jesus did for them, in his life, death and resurrection. The Eucharist is a central part of the Christian community -
therefore, it is imperative that children participate in Religious Education, so that they are prepared to have Jesus in their lives (Coster & Vickery, 2011).
For this unit of work, it is important for students to understand how the actions of Jesus feeding 5000 symbolises a gift given to us. The unit will provide lessons that teach children the
knowledge of love, how to give and experience love as well as Jesus’ love for us and the involvement of Priest’ in Eucharist. Through this unit of work students will begin to gain skills to
receive the grace of the Holy Spirit, emphasising the impact Jesus has on our lives as Catholics.
Jesus showed love and care for everyone throughout the Bible. The story of the Last Supper and the Feeding of the 5000 are exceptional examples of Jesus’ love for others, Jesus puts
other before himself - this show he cares. Jesus gave the Eucharist to his followers to celebrate his life and thank God for sending Jesus into our world - without this we would not have
the same love and compassion for people.
With Priest’ we are able to experience the love and teachings of Jesus, the Priest enables Jesus to be present in our lives and the love of Jesus to be alive in present day, fortunately for
Priest’ we are able to experience the Eucharist in a special way.
Through Jesus we able to learn to love ourselves, others and the world. We can therefore learn our place in the world, who we are and all about ourselves. Through this we can learn how
to love others and the various kinds of love; between mother and father, children, siblings, friends and other family members. Each one of these relationships has a different kind of
specialness, we care for these people in different ways and can learn how to behave around them and others.
“In the ecclesial service of the ordained minister, it is Christ himself who is present to his Church ... the priest, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, acts “in persona Christi Capitis”
[in the person of Christ the Head]. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1548)”.

2. Students will be brought back to the present classroom moment; the teacher will guide a few
5 minutes quick 30 second stretches.
3. The teacher will instruct students to sit in a circle. Praise will be given to students sitting
quietly.
4. The teacher will instruct that each week for this term, there will be a ‘secret mission’. This
week’s mission will be showing people around at school they love and care for them. (Please

Strategies for Learning and Teaching

1. Introduce students to the learning topic: People show love for others by reading the Godly Godly play: Last Supper
Play; Feeding of 5000. Engage students in wondering. Some suggested wondering

use of the Last Supper). Whiteboard markers (WALT + WILF sign if

- I wonder what Jesus meant by the words “This is my body which will be given for you”
- I wonder how Jesus felt as he shared this last meal with his disciples. Pens/Pencils/Texters.
- I wonder if the disciples understood what Jesus was doing.

2. The teacher will write the WALT on the board: We are learning how we can show one
another that we care, we are learning what we appreciate that people do for us. The teacher
will write the WILF on the board: I am looking for students to be respectful of everyone, act
kindly, keep an open mind and be able to verbally identify four various kinds of love.
Students have been learning in English, that capital letters signal proper nouns and commas
are used to separate lists – the teacher will remind students that they will be keeping an eye
out for this (Links: Literacy and Justice).

class – the teacher will have done this for themselves and the teacher aid or another staff
member.
4. Each student will be given different coloured strips.
5. The students will write all be given 3 pieces of paper, the teacher will allocate each student
two random students to write about. The last piece of paper will be for the student to write
about themselves. On the piece of paper about themselves, they are to write; what they like
about themselves and one goal they would like to implement on treating others.
6. On the piece of paper, the students will write only nice things about each other, a fond
memory and two positive characteristics. (Links: Justice) Colouring in.
Emphasise to students that “Dojo points or the chosen reward system for the classroom” will
be awarded to students who are on task and working quietly.
Request for one student to raise their hand and reiterate the task requirements, if it appears
the class is not confident on task.
Set students to task if they stray.
7. Any early finishers will have a colouring in contextual to the topic. (Please find attached in
the appendix).
Repeatedly provide positive affirmations to students for their efforts.
8. Once all students are finished, the teacher will connect the chain together and tell them that
their classroom is connected by kindness.

minutes 1. The teacher will instruct students to calmly, table by table, pack away their equipment.
2. Once the class has successfully packed away, the teacher will ask students to raise their
hands and answer the following questions: Anecdotal notes
3. What did they enjoy about the activity? How did it make them feel and how can they show
people outside of the classroom, for example, at home that they love them? (Links:
Prudence)
4. The teacher will compare the answers of each student and prompt the discussion; each
person has many different ways but very similar ways of showing they love someone – we
need to be respectful of each person.
5. Once the discussion is finished, the teacher will remind the students of their ‘secret mission’,
to follow in God’s footsteps and dismiss them.

pitches and with prior approval from the teacher, contextual adaptations (For example;
instead of a tax collector, it could be a bully). (Links: Critical and creative thinking)
15. Students will have 15 minutes to make their sock puppets – planning must be easily visible in
each step.
16. The teacher will inform students to not rush as there will be other lessons to continue on with
the task.
17. The instructions will be placed on the board – on PowerPoint or whiteboard marker.
18. The teacher and teacher aid will monitor the noise levels and walk around praising students
as well as aiding when needed.

in their correct places. Praise and classroom rewards will be given to students
cleaning up appropriate rewards will be given to students on task.

waiting for instructions.
3. The teacher will link this back to the Last Supper. Jesus wanted each person to be
cared for and loved, we all need love – once we learn to love ourselves and others,
we can develop a sense of belonging in the world, in their friendship groups, the
classroom and families.
4. Through the Last Supper, Jesus made his followers feel loved and cared for, he
made them feel like they belonged where they were and by his side.
5. The teacher will explain that the lesson is over and to keep this lesson present in
their thoughts throughout daily life.
