U.S. IMMIGRANT VISA FAQs from U.S.

EMBASSY ISLAMABAD

Q: Who needs to file for an immigrant visa petition?

A: Anyone who wants to live permanently or work in the United States needs to file for an
immigrant visa petition. Please visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) via
their website www.uscis.gov for information about filing an immigrant visa petition.

Q: How do I find out my case number?

A: You can find out your case number by directly contacting the National Visa Center (NVC).

Q: How do I find out the “priority date” of my immigrant visa petition?

A: You can find the priority date of your immigrant visa petition by visiting this link.

Q: I received an email saying I have been selected for a Diversity or “Lottery” (DV) visa.
How do I schedule my interview?

A: You should not believe unsolicited emails regarding the DV Lottery. A person cannot be
found eligible for any immigration benefit without first applying for that benefit through official
U.S. Government channels. For more information on eligibility criteria for DV Lottery visa,
please click here.

Q: I would like to schedule an appointment for an immigrant or Fiancé visa interview.

How do I proceed?

A: If your case was approved for an expedited processing, you have an approved fiancé
petition, or if you missed an appointment, please contact us through our contact form.

If your application was processed by the National Visa Centre (NVC) in New Hampshire, please
contact them directly for further information. If you received an interview letter from NVC, you
will not receive separate interview letter from the U.S. Embassy, Islamabad.

Q: I was asked to submit additional documents. How do I submit them to the Embassy?

A: You should submit additional documents via our approved courier service. If you are
submitting documents from outside Pakistan, you can use any courier of your choice. If you
have submitted documents and have not heard back for more than four weeks, please contact
us through our contact form. Please do not contact us if you submitted your documents less
than four weeks prior.

Q: My petitioner’s legal status has changed from green card holder to U.S. citizen. How
do I change my visa category?

A: You should send a scanned copy of your petitioner’s Naturalization Certificate or U.S.
passport by regular mail or via our contact form.

Q: I want to file Returning Resident (SB-1) visa / I-90 application

A: If you are green card holder and have stayed for more than one year outside the United
States, follow this link for further information. If your green card is lost, damaged, stolen, or you
have not yet received it, and you are returning to U.S. within a year, click on this link for further
information.

Q: I was asked to do DNA testing. What should I do?

A: If you decide to submit to DNA testing, click here for further information. All DNA samples for
immigrant visa applications must be collected at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad. Find more
information at this link. Once the lab in the U.S. sends the results to us, we will contact the
applicants to continue their immigrant visa case.

Q: I was told that my case has been suspended and will be sent back to the U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) with a recommendation for revocation.
What does it mean?

A: It means that the consular officer is not satisfied with your claimed relationship with the
petitioner. You will have to direct all inquiries to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
(USCIS) office where petition was originally filed. The U.S. Embassy will not take action on any
appeal or application for re-instatement.

Q: I was found ineligible to receive a visa during my interview. If I am allowed to file a

waiver application, what should I do?

A: If you have been found ineligible, the Consular Section cannot issue you a visa. Please visit
the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website www.uscis.gov for further
information. Please also note that after June 4, 2012, all waiver applications must be filed
directly with USCIS.

Q: There is a mistake or error in the information on my printed visa. How can I correct the
information?

A: You should send your passport and visa packet to the Immigrant Visa Section by courier
service and contact us through our contact form. We will return your passport with new visa and
visa packet via courier after making necessary corrections.

Q: Can my petitioner/relative/guardian accompany me to my visa interview?

A: The petitioner, a relative, or a guardian may accompany an applicant to his or her interview.
Please note that they will be required to produce original photo identification, such as passport,
green card, or national identification card, to enter the Consular Section. Please also note that
the interviewing visa officer might still ask for a one-on-one interview.

Q: I need to update the contact formation for myself / my petitioner. How should I provide
the new information?

A: If a) you have a visa case number (starts with three letters, then the 4-digit year, and then six
more digits) and b) NVC has confirmed that the Consular Section in Islamabad is now
processing your application, you should notify us through our contact form.
If your application is still being processed by the National Visa Center (NVC), then please notify
them directly for any updates.

Q: A fiancé visa petition has been approved for me. When will you contact me with
further information?

A: After receiving your case from the National Visa Center (NVC), the Consular Section will
review the information and send you an instructions letter called the “Packet 3.5,” either by
email or physical mail. This process may take up to four (4) weeks. If you do not hear from us
within three (3) weeks, please only then contact us via our contact form
