BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE FOR OCTOBER WEEK 2

SUBJECT: SERVING THE LORD – PART 1

DIRECTIVES FOR THE TEACHER

All Bible study class teachers should personally study the outline in preparation for the cell
meeting.

During the meeting, please ensure your members have their Bibles and all the Scriptures in the
outline are read; members have to look into their Bibles while the Scriptures are being read.

In addition, don’t rush through the subject as you teach; remember that our intention is to have
every member of the class understand the subject matter so that they can understand what the
Bible teaches on the subject, and can become acquainted with the Scriptures.
SYNOPSIS

After you have given your heart to Christ, He becomes the Lord of your life. How then should
you serve him? We are to serve God with our Spirits- John 4:24 (KJV): God is a Spirit and they
that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth”. Serving God with your Spirit is one
of the ways of service, another way to serve God is with your Body, this is called the works of
service.

In our Bible Study this month, we would learn basic principles and ways to serve God the Bible
way. It is very important to understand this because it will make you a success all year round.

This Bible study would be taken in two parts as we look at two ways to serve the Lord rightly;
which are:

I. PART 1- OCTOBER WEEK 2 --Serving the Lord with your Spirit

I. PART 2- OCTOBER WEEK 3 --Serving the Lord with your Body
PART 1: SERVING THE LORD WITH YOUR SPIRIT

John 4:23 (KJV): But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship
the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God relates with our spirits and not with our minds or physical body. He is a spirit; therefore we
can only communicate with Him from and with our spirits. That’s where the light of God is: “The
spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly” (Proverbs
20:27).

There are three basic ways to serve God with your Spirit:

1. Faith

Romans 1:17(KJV)- For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is
written, the just shall live by faith

When the Bible says the just shall live by faith, it’s talking about living from your spirit. Faith is
the response of the human spirit to the Word of God. To live by faith, therefore, means to live
from your spirit in response to God. That means, living on, and by the Word of God.

Matthew 4:4 says, “… It is written Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

For the child of God, faith is not merely a one-off activity for getting something done; it’s a daily
continuous lifestyle. There’s really no other way to live as a child of God, but by faith. The Bible
says, “but without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe
that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) .To
please God is to live by faith everyday. There should be a confidence in your spirit when you’re
confronted with challenging situations. You must live as a man or woman of faith everyday, by
disregarding the earthly, transient, temporal circumstances and focus on eternal realities. Like
your Father, call real the spiritual realities, which you’re yet to see with your optical eyes.
2. Prayer

Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)- “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and
watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplications for all saints”.

The Holy Spirit does carry out His intercessory ministry through you. The Lord may tell you to
pray for someone or minister to someone by the leading of His Spirit. Sometimes, you may be
praying about personal issues and the Spirit of God suddenly begins to work within you,
prompting you to intercede for an individual you never planned to pray for.

However, you don’t always have to wait for that prompting before you pray for others. As a
child of God, you have a responsibility to intercede for others. You can decide by yourself to
pray for someone without the Holy Spirit necessarily prodding you to do so. When you
intercede for others this way and in accordance with the Word, it will be heard by God in just
the same way as though the Holy Spirit inspired the words you spoke. It would just be as
though the Holy Spirit Himself carried out that particular ministry.

Revelations 8:4 (KJV)- “But the smoke of incense, which came with the prayers of the saints,
ascended up before God out of the angels hand”.

Through the prayer of intersession, God bestows on us opportunity, ability and inspiration to
make great impact in our world. He has set us on earth in these extraordinary times for the
purpose of changing lives.

Recognize that it’s your priestly responsibility to intercede for others, and it’s always a blessing
to function in that office. Prayer is a command and divine responsibility given to us by God.
Paul’s expressed this in his letter to Timothy, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all,
supplications, prayers and intersession, and giving of thanks, be made for all men” (1 Timothy
2:1). Through prayer, we hold sway over satanic forces that seek to influence the world, and
make circumstances move in favour of God’s plans and purposes for His people.
3. Worship

Acts 13:2(KJV)- “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me
Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them”.

To minister to the Lord is to worship Him; to exalt his name in praise and adoration; bring Him
an offering; and make confessions of His Word to His Name.

In ministering to the Lord, the first thing you must do is to give Him all your attention. You have
to set out time to minister to the Lord. Next you speak words that extol his majesty. One of the
synonyms of the word ‘Minister’ is worship. You should begin praising Him, not just generally
but with content. Praise him for specific things. Don’t just say “I praise you Lord.” Rather say
things like, “I praise you for making your Word real to me.” Praise Him with Understanding. An
example of this type of prayer is Isaiah 63:7.

Worshiping the Lord is one sure way to get his attention. The Bible tells us in Psalm 22:3 that
God dwells in the praises of His people.

Hebrew 13:15 say-“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that
is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Make confessions to His name, sing songs of
worship to him; praise him by lifting up your holy hands to Him. Tell Him how great He is, and
how much you love Him. Praise him lavishly from the bottom of your heart.

When you constantly fellowship with the Lord this way, the Holy Spirit will direct you in the
affairs of your life and you’ll always know what to do in every situation.
