    Letter-Sound Assessment Directions

    Directions: Ask each student to read the 26 uppercase and lowercase


    letters. Then ask each student to tell you the sound each letter makes. The
    goal is to discover which letters and sounds a student knows so you can
    prepare his or her letter bag for the Beginner Steps lessons.

    STEP 1 Show the student the Letter-Sound Recognition Student Form. Record response
    on the Letter-Sound Teacher Recording Form.

    STEP 2 Point to the first uppercase letter and say, Can you tell me the name of some of
    these letters? Start here and tell me the names of the letters you know.

    STEP 3 Have the student point to each letter as they read it. If this is too difficult, you can
    point to the letters. If a student struggles with the first few letters, ask them to scan
    the row and name any letters he or she recognizes. Record responses on the
    Letter-Sound Teacher Recording Form.

    STEP 4 Repeat with the lowercase letters.

    STEP 5 Assess letter sounds: Say, Now we are going to look at the letters again so you
    can tell me what sound each letter makes. Point to the first lowercase letter. Start
    here and tell me the sounds of each letter you know.

    STEP 6 Use the Letter-Sound Checklist found in the Teacher Assessment Record Book
    available at literacyfootprints.com/assessments to monitor student progress.
    Highlight or circle the letters and sounds each student knows. Update weekly until
    each student knows all letters and sounds.
