DLP No. Learning Area: Physical Science Grade Level: 11 Quarter: 4 Duration: 2 hrs
Explain the consequences of the postulates of General Relativity Theory (eg. Code: S11/12PS-IV i-j
Learning Competency:
Correct predictions of shifts in the orbit of mercury, gravitational bending of
light and black holes.
Key Concepts/ Understanding to Planets in and beyond the Solar System
be Developed: - Correct predictions of the shifts in the orbit of mercury
- Gravitational bending of light
Knowledge Describe some facts about the general theory of relativity.
Skills Explain correct predictions of the red shift in the orbit of mercury and gravitational
1. OBJECTIVES bending using the postulates in the theory of relativity.
Attitudes Practice critical thinking skills in examining evidences.
Values Demonstrate appreciation on the ideas of great thinkers of the past.

2. CONTENT How Physics helps us understand the cosmos?

3. LEARNING MATERIALS CG, Internet access : retrieve from http://www.sppace. Com

/RESOURCES:
4. PROCEDURES
4.1 Introductory Activity Review; the great thinkers behind the understanding of mechanics in the universe and unifying theory of
relativity. (Isaac Newton,James Clerk Maxwell, Albert Enstein)

4.2 Activity Group Task: ( Provide a concept notes on 12 things to know about the theory of relativity) Think, Share,
Pair, report the main idea to the class for discussion.

4.3 Analysis
What hypothesis in the theory of relativity explains the red shift?
What hypothesis in the theory of relativity explains the changes in the orbit of mercury?

4.4 Abstraction
In understanding the general theory of relativity, evidences on the red shift, the changes in the orbit of
mercury and the gravitational bending of light can be deduced and explained.

4.5 Application
Use the postulates in the theory of relativity to explain the phenomenon of red shift, changes in the orbit
of mercury and the gravitational bending of light

4.6 Assessment Open-ended questions will be asked.

4.7 Assignment Read in advance the Dopler effect and the Cosmos Distance ladder as instruments in estimating the speed
and the distance of far-away objects in the universe.

4.8 Concluding Activity Ponder on the words of Albert Einstein

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better”

Learning Competency: Explain how the speed and the distance of far-off objects are estimated using Code: S-11/12PS-IVi-j
the concept Doppler effect, cosmos distance ladder.
Key Concepts/ Understanding to Planets and beyond the solar system
be Developed: - How the estimation of the speed and the distance of far-away objects are done using the concept of
Doppler effect and the cosmos distance ladder.
Knowledge Describe what is Doppler effect and Cosmos distance ladder.
Skills Explain how the estimates of speed and distance of far-away objects are estimated using
the Doppler effect and the cosmos distance ladder.

4.1 Introductory Activity
How do scientist make estimate of the speed and distance of far-away objects in the universe such as the
stars and the planets?

4.2 Activity
Make four groups in the class. Two groups will work on the cosmos distance ladder and two groups will
work on the Doppler effect.Provide necessary materials including concept notes, let students work on the
learning task, and present output for the whole class discussion.

4.3 Analysis 1. What is cosmos distance ladder and how does it use to estimate distance and speed of far-away objects in
the universe?
2. What is Doppler effect and how does it use it use to estimate distance and speed of far-away objects?

4.4 Abstraction
In making estimates on the distance and speed of the far-away objects in the universe, scientist use the
concept of Doppler effect and the cosmos distance ladder.
4.5 Application
Scientist use concepts and ideas of other scientist in explaining some of their observations and findings
that needs to be explained.
4.6 Assessment
Test: Open-ended questions will be asked.

4.7 Assignment Make a research work describing Doppler effect and cosmos distance ladder. Provide reference of your
research. Submit your work by next meeting.
4.8 Concluding Activity
Scientist are patient in their works and open-minded to accept some truths from other scientist.
