Basics of Solar Power System

Figure 1: On-grid Solar Rooftop PV System with Bi-directional Meter Arrangement

Working of the System:

1. The power generated from solar plant is self-consumed in the building first and only the
excess is exported to the grid
2. A typical 1kW solar power plant generates 4 units in a day (during peak summers 1kW
generates 5 to 5.5 units per day and during winter it reduces to 2.8 to 3.2 units per day the
yearly average will be equated to 4 units per Kilowatt per day)
3. A bi-directional meter will replace the existing BESCOM meter which will measure both
import and export
4. While taking the monthly bill, a difference of export and import will be calculated and the
payment is based on the net amount
5. If the export is more than import, BESCOM will pay the consumer for the net export. If import
is more, consumer has to pay the BESCOM for the net import as per the prevailing slab rates
6. The revenue for solar energy would be deposited in the account details provided on a monthly
basis. BESCOM shall buy the power at ₹ 3.56 per unit
7. A PPA(power purchase agreement) will be signed between the consumer and the
BESCOM for a period of 25 years

Key advantages of solar power system:

1. Simple and Safe system with greatest savings on your utility bill over the lifetime of your
Solar Power Plant
2. Solar panels have long life span with generation guarantee of 25 yrs and a payback period
of 5-7 yrs
3. Efficient fit and forget system with least losses and requires very minimal maintenance
4. Accelerated depreciation Benefits of 40% in first year for Private Limited Companies
5. Mono/Polycrystalline panels & MPPT inverter gives highest yield
6. Utilizes the free terrace space and reduce heat on the top floor
7. Renewable energy generation can avail green certification

Load Calculation

NOTE: As per the latest bill dated 09/09/2019 the total units consumed by both comman
area and Home is 246 units i.e app. 9 units per day. Based on the available site area and
the present load demand we propose a 3kW Solar Power System. A 3kW Solar Power
System. The proposal explores 3kW Hybrid, On-grid and Off-grid System. As per your
requirement Hybrid System will be configured such that there will no export of power,
to the grid, entire solar Power generated will be connected to both comman area, Terrace
Lightening Load and Home load points. This goes same with Off-grid system as well.

We have proposed On-grid system in the proposal, in case of on-grid any one meter can
be applied for net-metering since BSECOM allows only one connection for solar in
multi-dwelling buildings. Hence customer has to decide on which meter to be
considered for solar power.

Commercial Offer 1: Hybrid Power System
Hybrid Solar Power System
Hybrid solar systems generate power in the same way as a On-grid solar power system,
but use batteries to store energy for later use. This ability to store energy enables most hybrid
systems to also operate as a backup power supply during a blackout, similar to a UPS system.

Solar Hybrid Advantages:

 Stores solar or low cost (off-peak) electricity
 Allows use of solar energy during peak times (self-use or load-shifting)
 Power available during a grid outage or blackout – UPS function
 Enables advanced energy management (i.e. peak shaving)
 Enables energy independence
 Reduces power consumption from the grid (reduced demand)

Solar Hybrid Disadvantages:

 Higher cost than grid-feed solar. Mainly due to the high cost of batteries
 More complex installation requires more room and higher installation cost
 Battery life of just 5 years
 May limit how many appliances you can run at the same time
 Instance 1 – General Wiring

 Grid= present, Solar = Present

 Conditions: Grid will be powering the load

 Grid charging of battery: Programmable, Priority charging: solar power

Instance 2 – Pure off-grid topology

Grid = absent, Solar = present

Conditions: Solar (+ Battery) will be powering the load. Grid charging of battery: NA

Instance 3 – Load sharing with grid power – topology, with FULL solar
availability
Grid: Present, Solar: Present

Solar Availability =1000W

Grid power will not be consumed even though the grid is available, Complete generation will be
diverted to Load, post charging of the Battery.

Instance 4 – Load sharing with grid power – topology with partial solar
availability
Grid: Present, Solar: Present

Load Shares the solar power and the grid power, thereby reducing the grid utilization

Instance 5 – Load sharing with grid power – topology with full solar
availability with partial load demand.
Grid: Present, Solar: Present

The excess power generated by solar will be fed back to the grid.

In this combination the solar power plant is designed with a combination of Vikram Solar or
waaree solar panels, integrated with Delta or ABB String inverters. All the Solar PV panels are wired
in series and parallel combination depending upon the inverter rating to form multiple strings.

Figure 3 String Inverter System

The advantages of String Inverter System:

1. Traditionally, string inverters have offered a lower initial cost per peak watt price.
2. String inverters can be easier to install because they accept DC input from multiple panels.
This also makes them somewhat easier to maintain, though possibly more difficult to troubleshoot
if something goes wrong
The disadvantages of String Inverter System:
1. The Delta Inverter comes with a very minimal warranty of just 5 years
2. Though this system comes with remote monitoring for the overall plant, the module level
Monitoring is not possible in this system which leads to more time for fault identification during
any major breakdown
3. Multiple failures can be unnoticed for a long time until the inspection is performed
4. if one panel in the string is affected by a fault or by shade caused by a passing cloud, then the entire
string of panels is affected by that one panel

Commercial Offer 3: Off-grid System

Working Principle of a off-grid Solar PV Power System

An off-grid solar system (off-the-grid, standalone) is the obvious alternative to one that is grid-tied.
Places where there is no access for grid power or where there are frequent power cuts; off-grid system
could be the best solution. To ensure access to electricity at all time, off-grid solar system requires
battery storage.

A typical off grid system consists of following:

 Solar Charge Controller

 Battery Bank
 Off-Grid Inverter
 AC and DC Disconnect System

Off-grid Solar Rooftop PV System

The solar PV modules when exposed to the sunlight generate DC electricity. Solar charge
controllers also known as charge regulators limit the rate of current being delivered to the battery bank
and protect the batteries from over charging. Good charge controllers are crucial for keeping the
batteries healthy so that the life time of battery bank is maximized. A battery bank is essentially a
group of batteries wired together to store the electricity produced from the solar panels. Electrical
current flows from the solar panel through charge controller and battery bank before it is finally
converted into AC by the off-grid inverter. AC and DC safety disconnects are required for all solar
systems. For off-grid solar systems, one additional DC disconnect is installed between the battery bank
and the off-grid inverter. It is used to switch off the current flowing between these components. This
is important for maintenance, troubleshooting and protection against electrical fires.
