Daily Lesson Plan in Earth Science

School Grade Level Grade 12

Learning
HOPE 4 Semester 2
Area
Quarter 4 Week 1

I-Objectives
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates an understanding of geologic processes that occur
within the Earth and the folding and faulting of rocks.
B. Performance The learners shall be able to conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic
Standards hazards that your community may experience. (Note: Select this performance
standard if your school is in an area near fault lines, volcanoes, and steep
slopes.)

2. Conduct a survey or design a study to assess the possible

hydrometeorological hazards that your community may experience. (Note:
Select this performance standard if your school is in an area that is frequently
hit by tropical cyclones and is usually flooded.
C. Learning At the end of the session, the learner should be able to compare and contrast
Competencies the formation of the different types of igneous rocks
code: S11/12ES -Ic-18

IV- PROCEDURES

A- Reviewing 1. Ask the students about the different classification of rocks.

previous lesson or 2. Let them share their understanding about the different types of rocks
presenting the 3. Be able to direct the students to understanding that each classification of
new lesson rocks has different formations.
B- Establishing a 1. Apart from the different classifications of rocks let the students share
purpose for the lesson their understanding how rocks are formed.
2. Let the students share their thought about differentiating the formation of
the types of igneous rocks
3. Introduce the objective of the lesson.

C-Presenting 1. The teacher will show different types of igneous rocks and let them
examples/instances describe their characteristics.
of the new lesson 2. Introduce the different types of igneous rocks one by one and let the
students identify what type of igneous rock is she/he shows.

D- Discussing new 1. Using the rocks shown by the teacher, describe the different types of
concepts and practicing igneous rocks. Let the students identify the difference of these igneous
skills #1 rocks.
2. The teacher will let the students classify the types of igneous rocks
3. Let them describe the formation of the different types of igneous rocks.
4. Clarify the answers of the students.
E-Discussing new 1. Introduce the students on how these rocks are formed and how are they
concepts and practicing classified.
skills #2 2. Each group will be given one type of igneous rocks and they will answer
the following:
-Identify the type of igneous rock
-chemical composition and properties of igneous rocks
3. A representative will present the answer to the class.
4. Play a video clip about the formation of the different types of igneous
rocks

F- Developing mastery Ask:

 Differentiate the formation of the types of igneous rocks
 How these change in physical and chemical conditions under the
surface of the earth helps the formation of igneous rocks?
G- Finding practical Ask:
applications of  Design/make a mock-up model which shows how formation of igneous
concepts and skills in rocks happens.
daily living  Give examples of the use of igneous rocks in our everyday living.
H- Making Ask:
generalizations and  As a student, what type of igneous rock would you prefer to use for
abstraction about the decorative, monumental and architectural purposes? why?
lesson  What is the most important use of igneous rock?

I- Evaluating learning
Give the characteristics/formation of each type of igneous rock:

1. Granite
2. Gabbro
3. Basaltic
4. Dolerite

A. Explain the process of the formation of intrusive and extrusive rocks.
J- Additional activities Homework:
1. Describe how rocks behaves under different types of stress such as;
 Compression
 Pulling apart
 Shearing
V- REMARKS

VI- REFLECTION

earned 80% in the
evaluation

B- No. Of learners who

require additional
activities for
remediation
C- Did the remedial
lessons work? No. Of
learners who caught up
with the lesson

D- No. Of learners who

SESSION GUIDE
Title of the Episode HOPE 4- Igneous Rocks

Title of the Session Compare and Contrast of the Formation of the Different Types of Igneous Rocks

Duration 45 minutes
 Different types of igneous rocks
Materials Needed  Laptop
 Projector
At the end of the session, the learner should be able to:

Objectives 1. explain the formation of the different types of igneous rocks;

2. recognize the importance of the formation of igneous rocks; and
3. compare and contrast the formation of the different types of igneous rocks
The word igneous is derived from Latin word “IGNIS” means fire.
These rocks are formed by the solidification of Magma or Lava. These rocks are
also known as primary or first formed rocks. When magma is under the surface of
the earth it is called Magma. When it erupts out from volcanoes it is known as lava.
As we go under the surface of the earth, it is observed that temperature increases
Introduction/Overview every depth. It is considered that 1˚C temperature increases on every 40m depth.
Considering these facts, we can say that a stage will come where the temperature
found to be 1000˚C. That stage should be at the depth of 40km.
In this lesson, formation and description of the different types of igneous rocks
will be discussed, and the classification. The importance of igneous rocks in our
daily lives will also know.
1. The students will be group into 5. There will be five (5) types of rocks to be
shown by the teacher. Each group will be assigning one type rock and they

will describe it. These rocks are examples of the types of igneous rocks.
2. Describe the formation of the types of igneous rocks.
1. Introduce the students how igneous rocks are formed and how are they
classified.
2. Each group will be given one type of igneous rocks and they will answer the
following:
Activity 2 -Identify what type of igneous rock
- Chemical composition and properties of igneous rocks
3. A representative will present the answer to the class.
