 PREFACE

Dear Friends,

This e-book is an attempt to help the

devotees performing snanam during

pushkaram. All the generic slokam and

procedures are given in Sanskrit and

Tamil Scripts. We have also provided the

contact number of Vathiyar's in the

book, to help you use this as a reference

handbook and perform the snanam as

per the sampradayam suggested in the

puranam. Please take a print out of this

if possible or use it from your mobile...

As per our puranas , Kaveri is Great among Rivers just as

Annadanam is great among Danums. Mukti is attained by

uttering the name of Ganga, having Darshan of

Ramasethu in Dhanushkoti, and listening to Ramayana.

But in case of Kaveri, mukti is attained merely by thinking

of the river... !

River Cauvery flows through the southern states of India

and is considered one of the maha nadhi or divine river.

This year it is declared as Cauvery Maha Pushkaram

Meaning :  “The letter ‘Ka’ in the word ‘Kaveri’ removes all

sins; ‘Ve’ fulfils all desires; ‘Ri’ grants Moksha to people.

Know this to be the intent of the term ‘Kaveri’.”

Kaveri is Devi Parvathi incarnate, who came down to earth

as Lopamudra, consort of sage Agastya and turned into

river for the wellbeing of mankind. Puranas abound in

stories of persons redeeming themselves of heinous sins by

bathing in Kaveri. Even Raja Harischandra of Ayodhya

bathed in Kaveri in Tula month for relief from the sin of a

minor transgression.
 Snanam Procedure
Puranas prescribe an approach for performing the Snanam

rituals in the holy rivers. Performing these as per the

procedure will ensure removal of our sins and also good

health. Body will develop Tejas, intellect will be sharpened

and mind will develop clarity and will be attracted towards

the good. With God's blessing Sathsangam and Brahma

gnana will result. We need to follow certain rules during

Snana as per Sastra Sampradaya.

We shoud first prostrate to the river in its bank.Before Snanam

we should meditate on Devi Kaveri with full concentration and

seek her blessings.

Then without setting foot first in the river we should do

Prokshanam (sprinkling on head) using the river water.

We should then take a dip in the river and hand dry our

clothes and wear them again and apply Vibhuti/Pundhra and

do Snana Sankalpam. We should then do snanam with

devotion.

Doing snana uttering Bhagavan nama will strengthen the

benefits.

During or before snana we should avoid oil application,

eating thambulam, shaving, unnecessary talk. After snanam

we should apply vibhuti or pundhra (as per Kulachara) and do

our Nityakarma Anusthanams. 

Post this, we must try and do some danum as prescribed for

the day or dosham. (Refer Danum list in the chapters later ) 

Post this do Kaveri Prarthana

Then perform the Argyam as per the slokas given

Post this you can visit local temples and listen to Tula

Puranam
Please do not pollute river through personal pollutes

or human excreta.. Leaving Plastic papers, using

chemical soaps , shampoos etc only lead to pollution

of the rivers. Please adopt naturally available items

for your personal usage. Brushing the teeth,

urinating, taking oil-bath etc must be avoided.

Washing of clothes with detergents, soaps etc must

be avoided. If we respect the river and learn to treat

it carefully, it will bless us with good health, wealth

and prosperity.

Let us join hands in this event to save our holy rivers !

 Dhyanam Slokam

 I Meditate on Devi Kaveri who is dressed in apparel

made of white silk, seated in Padmasana posture,

holding her hands in the mudra of freedom from fear (

Abhaya), grant of boon (Varada) , lotus and pitcher,

radiant with the shine of a crore of full moon ; with

beautiful bliss-radiating face, abode of all sacred

tirthas like Ganga !

Puranas recommend Six of these kshetras are hailed as

being equivalent to Kashi in merit.

They are:

Mayavaram (Gowri Mayuram),

Tiruvenkadu (Svetaranyam),

Tiruvaiyaru (Panchanadam),

Tiruvidaimarudur (Madhyarjunam),

Chayavanam and

Srivanchiyam.

Other prominent kshetras include Srirangam,

Thiruveengoimalai (near Tiruchi), Tiruvarur, Kodumudi,

Karur, Swamimalai, Tiruvisainalloor, Kumbakonam, etc.

Of these, Mayiladuthurai (Mayavaram) has been

specially chosen for this observance on a grand scale. 

Translated to – “The one who does donation of books

or food , gets all the prosperity which is

uncomparable to anything else”

Following table provides a view on the required

dhanum ( charity) to be given during pushkaram.

on the particular day of Pushkaram is listed below.
