B. How does this product or artifact express the Filipino concept of art?

A famous traditional basket made by the “Palaw’an Tribe”. It is one of the unique heritage art and
craft original in Palawan and mostly seen in the mountains of the south and used to store rice, carry
food, or even store treasured possessions. Tingkep/Tingkop is also used by healers during a ritual
called “kundu” to house the spirit of Linamen, a beautiful and powerful female spirit. This woven
basket is slowly gaining popularity among tourist, which serves as another source of profit for the
tribe.

It is made from soft woven strips of “buldong”, “binsag” and “busnig” varities of bamboo, held
together by rattan frame which gives it shapes and provides sturdiness.

This product is more than a basket, the Tingkep/Tingkop is a reflection of the life and culture of the
Palaw’an, an indigenous community of the Philippines. This handicraft combines the artwork of
humans and their forest. Sadly, now that there are threats to the Forest of Palawan Island, the
Palawan people are also threatened by the potential loss of their homes and their traditions.
