I.
1. What is hazard?
Answer: Hazard is basically defined as a threat caused by natural and man-made activities.
2. What is disaster?
Answer: It is a sudden circumstance, mostly catastrophic and harmful, that could take away the
lives of the majority.
3. What is disaster risk?
Answer: According to the terminology of UNDRR, disaster risk is defined as “the potential loss
of life, injury, or destroyed or damaged assets which could occur to a system, society or a
community in a specific period of time, determined probabilistically as a function of hazard,
exposure, and capacity”.
4. What is vulnerability?
Answer: It is the condition of being open to life-threatening attacks and happenings; Thus,
resulting to exposure of weaknesses.
5. What is Disaster Risk Reduction?
Answer: According to UNDRR, it is the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through
systematic efforts to analyze and reduce the causal factors of disasters. Reducing exposure to
hazards, lessening vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the
environment, and improving preparedness and early warning for adverse events are all
examples of disaster risk reduction.
6. What are the goals and targets of the SENDAI framework?
Answer: According to PreventionWeb, it aims to achieve the substantial reduction of disaster
risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and
environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries over the next 15
years.
7. What is the role of youth in reducing disaster risk?
Answer: According to UNDRR, the youth are recognized as critical stakeholders to support the
implementation of the SENDAI framework, fully committed to volunteer in the SENDAI
framework, and they are the strong voice for risk reduction.
8. Based on the vid, why is DRRM participatory and inclusive? How will you and the
vulnerable/marginalized sectors benefit from this process?
Answer: According to the NDRRM plan, they are participatory and inclusive because they fulfill
the requirement of RA No. 10121 of 2010, which provides the legal basis for policies, plans and
programs to deal with disasters. As a result, the vulnerable sectors and I will benefit from this
process. The NDRRMP covers four thematic areas, namely, (1) Disaster Prevention and
Mitigation; (2) Disaster Preparedness; (3) Disaster Response; and (4) Disaster Rehabilitation
and Recovery, which correspond to the structure of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Council (NDRRMC).

Self:
a. Hazards – Air and traffic pollution
b. Vulnerabilities – Cigarettes and vehicle smoke
c. Capacities – Wearing facemask & staying away from smoking and traffic areas
d. Concrete actions to reducing risk – Advocate a #NoSmoking Campaign & increasing
awareness about air pollution

Home/Family:
a. Hazards – Water pollution and infected diseases
b. Vulnerabilities – Flood and leptospirosis
c. Capacities – Wear boots and avoid flooded areas
d. Concrete actions – Raise awareness signals about incoming storm surges, typhoon, etc. &
evacuation

School:
a. Hazards – Earthquake and landslide
b. Vulnerabilities – Breaking down of infrastructures & death
c. Capacities – Hide under wooden chairs or tables; Stay in an open area
d. Concrete actions – Take precautionary measures regarding earthquakes and participate in
earthquake drills

Community:
a. Hazards – Storm surges and typhoons
b. Vulnerabilities – House roofs being blown away; Flood in low areas
c. Capacities – Always bring an umbrella, raincoat and rain boots; Stay inside the house
d. Concrete actions – Get updates from PAGASA regarding the weather forecast; Volunteer in
providing goods and charity to affected areas
