INTRODUCTION

Kakati Prataparudra's II sword and pen commanded

equal respect. His court seems to have been busy with men of
letters, ft is said that there are about two hundred
poets in his
court. He is a scholar and a poet by himself. He wrote two
Sanskrit plays Usaragodayam and Yayaticaritra. Vidyinatha the
author of the famous Prataparudrayasobhusanam, Narasimha of
the Ksdambarikaly&nam, Sakalyamallana of
Udararaghmvam,
Achintyendrakavi who prepared the Anumakondasasanam,
Ravipiti Tripurantaka who composed the Premabhiramam,
Narasimhadasa who wrote the Siddhodvaham a kavya which is
inscribed on slabs and Jayapasenani the author of the Nrtta-
ratnavali&TQ a few noteworthy poets in his court. Gangadevi who
wrote the Mathuravijaya comes of the Kakati family. 1

Agastya Pandita the author of the present work the Bala-

bharatam, is said to have flourished during the period of Pratapa-
rudra Deva II of Warrangal. 2 Though he is said to have been
the author of some Seventy four works, we are able to trace so
far only three works viz., the Krsnacaritam, the Nalakirtikaumudi-
kavya and the Bslabharatam.

Out of these the Balabharatam a mahakavya in twenty

is

cantos, available in full whereas the Nalaklrtikaumudi is available

in two cantos only and the Krsnacaritam, a prose work is almost
complete excepting two or three pages at the beginning.

From these extant works, we cannot gather any biographi-

cal data of Agastya Pandita, as he did not seem to have cared
to mention it. But from Narasimha and ViSvanatha, the authors
of Ksdambarinatakam, and Saugandhikapaharanam, respect-
ively, we understand that Agastya the maternal uncle of these
two scholars, enjoyed the patronage of Prataparudra II of the

Kakatlya family at Warrangal between A.D. 1294-1325. Except-
ing this no other detail is known to us. But from the statements
of Gangadevi Visvanatha 2 and Rajacudamani DIksita/ we note
1

that Agastya enjoyed popularity as a poet and occupied an

important place in she galaxy of scholars. He seems to have
had another nephew by name Gangadhara who was also extoll-
ed by Gangadevi in her Mathitra\ijayam^ A perusal at the titles
of his other warks iulso reveals the fact that Agastya handles
themes from the tooics of epics and Puranas which have been
current in the people from times immemorial. This may be due
to his reverence for vyasa.

Of the
three works so far came iato light two titles i e.
the Krsnacaritam ard the Nalaklrtikaumudi were edited by my
friend Prof. T\ Veakatacharya of the University of Toranto,
Canada, The learned scholar, in his valuable introduction to
the Krsnacaritam, gave about eleven points to prove that Vidya-
natha, the author of the Prataparudrayasobhusanam a work on
rhetoric and Agastja Pandi-a are twu different persons and not
identical as a seethe n of the scholars opined on the basis of
a verse (11-37) found in the Prataparudrayasobhusanam *

To add one more point that if the term Vidyanatha

this 1 like to
were to be a title acquired by Agastya, either Visvanatha his
nephew and an younger contemporary or Gangadevi the student
of Visvanatha should have expressly mentioned it on the occasion
of eulogising Agastya in their works. As nothing of such sort
is seen from the pen of his kith and kin we can feel that Vidya-
natha and Agastya are not identical*

the date of Agastya we have to solely depend

To determine
upon external evidences as nothing connected with his date is
found in his works so far extant. In this connection the stale-
'

ment of Visvanatha, the teacher of Gahgadevi seems to be roost

authentic. Visvanatha in his play Saugandhikapaharanam says
that he wrote the work at the behest of the king Piataparudra II
(of the Kakati family at Warrangal) and he was the nephew of
the great poet Agastya through his mother, 1 From this we
understand that Visvanatha enjoyed the patronage of the king
Prataparudra but his uncle Agastya, whether in the court of
Prataparudra or not, was a senior and attained fame during that
period which fact was evidenced by Gangadevi, and Rajachuda-
mani DIksita also. Hence we can safely place Agastya Pandita
in the first half of the thirteenth century.

Agastya's Krstiacaritam is a small prose work, and the

Nalaklnikaitmudi is a fragment containing two contos (II and
IV) consisting of 182 verses in all. The third work the Bala -

bharatam is a mahakavya containing twenty contos. Here the

author narrates the entire kernel of the Mahabharata stripping
off theupakhyanas An frecht's 'catalogues catatahgorum gives the
following works as belonging to Agastya
(1) Balabharatam
(2) Manipariksa or Ratnapriks*
(3) Laksmlstctram*
(4) Lalitasahasranamam
(5) Sivasamhita
(6) Sivastakam and
(7) Sakaladhikara.

Works on the theme :

works~ belonging to different authors have come

Many
down to us, in different literary forms on the same theme of the
MahabtiSrata. The following are a few of them
1- Bharatacampu by Anantabhatta.
2. Bharatarnanjari by Ksemendra.
3. Balabharatam by Amaracandra.
4. Balabharatam or Pracandapandava by Rajasekhara.
5. Bharatayuddha by Bhattatri.
6. Bharatasamgraha by Laksmanasuri.
7. Bharatasamksepa by Isaaabhatta.
8. Bharatacampu by Rajacudamani DIksita.
9. Bhdratakatha by Narasimha and
10. Prasabharatam by Suryanarayana Kavi.

Of the above the Bharatarnanjari.&nd. the Balabharatam of

Ksemendra are works in poetry, i.e. written in the style of
mahakavyas, and all other works either belong to the category of
campu, drama or prose. Hence we note that, including the
present work of Agastya Pandita there are only three works on
this theme, written as mahakavyas. The main intention of these
authors is only to epitatnize the original Mahdbharata. Though
the intention is the same the execution varied. The Balabharata
of Amaracandra (irrespective of the arrangement of the
cantos)
contains about 5,330 verses and the Bharatarnanjari of Ksemendra
'

contains 8,810 verses while the Balabharata of Agastya contains

1,194 verses only. From this it is clear that Agastya stands
foremost in achieving the desired object.

Amaracandra does not seem to have omitted any anecdote

of the original, while Ksemendra seems to have omitted certain
upakfiyanas; and Agastya omitting the entire lore of upakhy&nas
continued the thread of the main story. He
simply narrated
the incidents that are absolutely essential for
grasping the
contexts or the justification of an incident like that of the
previous birth of Draupadi etc. Even in these cases he did not
dilate much on them; He simply rushed
through the last parvas
of the work; Hence he became successful in
narrating the story
of the entire Mahabharata in 1,794 verses.
X1J

Poetry :

Through out the work Agastya seems to have been cons-

cious that he is writing for the children. He does not strain
either for theround about or out of the way expressions. His
poetry is simple and sweet. It does not require any commen-
tary. The variety of figures he used are almost drawn from the
objects familiar with in day to day life. A perusal at his other
works also gives us the idea that he is a poet of the first order,
and he is fully conversant with Vaidarbhinti besides Dhvani? 1
,

gwta and Alankara* schools* But unfortunately this does not help
us to assertain his fixed views on the schools of poetry.

As a mahakavya the Baiabharatam deserves to be placed

by the side of the Raghuvamsa of Kalidasa. The rich imagi-
nation of the poet is discernable in the hights of his unhampered
narration. He believes that a mahakavi should posses a rich
variety of visayas* and the uttarance of a satkavi should be
endearing to a connoissure.* In getting these two objectives
fulfilled the story of the Mah&bharata afforded him a great
opportunity which he executes with his utmost skill, erudition
and experience. It is no exaggiration if we say that the Bala*
bharatam shows the poet at his best. Because of his rich
erudition he unconsiously echoes on occasions the great poets,
he digested. The reverence he had for K51idisa.etc,can be seen
in his expressions which are almost similar such as

Apart from this we note that Agastya repeats his verses

in his works as and when occasion warrents. For example his
Nalakirtikaumudi and Balabharatam contain the same lines and

verses also. The line ^^?cf ^jCTf

kirtikaumudi (IV. 10) is also observed in the Balabharatam
(V. 95). The description of the ladies who run to see Nala (IV.
16 to 24) is exactly the same as that of the ladies who run to
see Krsna in the Balabharatam (XIL 29 to 41); which is exactly
in imitation of the description of the ladies who run to see
isvara in the Kumar asambhav am. (VII. 56-61) of Kalidasa,

Commentaries :

There is only one commentary called Manohara on this

vork, by Salva Timmapa, the dandanayaka under Srikrishna

levaraya of Vijayanagar. History says that Thimmarusu is a
ntnister of Srikrishna devaraya. Copies of this commentary are
ivailable both with the Madras Govt. Oriental Manuscript

.ibrary and the Sarasvatimahal Library, Tanjore; but they are

ncomplete. The commentary belonging to the MGOL is only for
XIV

fivecantos (4 and 5 and a portion of the th canto and 10 and

12 which breaks off at the verse 27 in canto 12) where as the
commentary belonging to the Sarasvatimahal contains 1 to 10
cantos only. Even this available portion is with full of lacuna.

Editions :

Aportion of this BaJabharatam was edited by Prof. P.P.

Sastry of the Presidency College, Madras, and published serially
in the Sankaragurukul Patrika with the commentary Manohara
from 1939. This contains only 6 cantos. Sri Vanivilasa Press
brought it out in a book from as No* 4 of its series. It also
appeared as No. 9 of the Madras Oriental publications in 1939.

In the beginning, though intended to bring out the entire

I

text with its commentary manohara, I was oblized later on to

change my mind for the reasons that the commentary is in*
complete; that even the available portion is with full of lacuna
and that the poem does not require a commentary. But while
editing the poem I as far as possible, made use of the commen-
5

tary.
