Section – A
Reading [20 Marks]
Q 1. Read the passage carefully. [8]
1. Then all the windows of the grey wooden house (Miss Hilton used to live here. She expired last week)
were thrown open, a thing I had never seen before.
2. At the end of the day a sign was nailed on the mango tree : FOR SALE.
3. Nobody in the street knew Miss Hilton. While she lived, her front gate was always locked and no one ever
saw her leave or saw anybody going in. So, even if you wanted to, you couldn't feel sorry and say that you
missed Miss Hilton.
4. When I think of her house, I see just two colours-grey and green. The green of the mango tree, the grey of
the house and the grey of the high iron fence that prevented you from getting the mangoes.
5. If your cricket ball fell into Miss Hilton's courtyard you never got it back. It wasn't the mango season
when Miss Hilton died. But we got back about ten or twelve of our cricket balls.
6. The house was sold and we were prepared to dislike the new owners even before they came. I think we
were a little worried. Already we had one resident of the street who kept on complaining about us to our
parents. He complained that we played cricket on the pavement; and if we were not playing cricket, he
complained that we were making too much noise anyway.
7. One afternoon when I came back from school Pal said, "Is a man and a woman. She pretty pretty, but he-
ugly like hell". I didn't see much. The front gate was open, but the windows were shut again. I heard a dog
barking in an angry way.
8. One thing was settled pretty quickly. Whoever these people were, they would never be the sort of people
to complain that we were making noise and disturbing their sleep.
9. A lot of noise came from the house that night. The radio was going at full volume until midnight when the
radio station closed down. The dog was barking and the man was shouting. I didn't hear the woman.

1. In India it began a decade ago when the animated version of Manga called ‘Amine’ began to be broadcast.
The style of animation had distinct characteristics—a sharply stylised black-and-white format, minimal
dialogue, complex plots and characters and extended storylines that could run on for months, or thousands of
pages.
2. Having got hooked on the TV series, many young fans hungry for more, took to the original comic
versions was just the tip of iceberg. Other children began creating Manga art in their free time. The lengthy
storylines hooked other youngsters. One of the youngsters started reading a Manga series on the Buddha and
took 13 years to complete it. He finally said that apart from being drawn to it by its storyline, he fell in love
with the art form.
3. For publishers this segnent holds promise Blaft’s best selling I ndian title Stupid Guy Goes to India was
published in March this year and features Yamamastu trying to run a tiny noodle soup stall in a Delhi slum.
The book illustrates the range of topics that manga can tackle. The book sold 6,000 copies without much
marketing going into it. Next, Viz Media, the US subsidiary of Japanese Manga, will launch in India with 75
titles as the publishers feel that the Indian market is ripe for a Manga takeover. As the Indian reader has
already been initiated into Manga through the cartoon series, many of the titles that the US subsidiary will
be bringing to India have been brought by parallel importers. While all these publishers agree that the
Manga comics and books will not be cheap, they are sure of selling well as there is a very strong fan base
existing here.
4. Not just the publishing world, but even the live stage has been caught by the manga fever. United by their
love for this Japanese art form, Indian Manga lovers have started staging dance and music performances and
culinary experience around Manga, as part of the Cool Japan Festival undertaken by the Japanese Consulate
and held at a city mall. In all, there were about 300 participants having grown from a handful of people
when it was started in 2010. This thriving club is part of a pattern across all metro cities with dedicated fan
clubs, meet ups and even manga libraries, that have emerged over the last five years.

Subject: Complaint Regarding the Flat
Dear Sir,
Through this letter of mine, I would like to inform you that I had bought a flat in the month of May from
PQR Builders at Ganpati Apartments, but I am very disappointed that the quality, that you had promised, has
not been delivered.
Not even a year has passed and we have already started facing a lot of problems. There is seepage in the
walls and ceilings. The wall paint is peeling off and even the sanitary fittings are leaking. But the greatest
inconvenience is caused because of the lift. It gets stalled every now and then and we, especially the senior
citizens, have to face a lot of problems.
We did not expect these kind of services from a renowned builder like you. Kindly look into the matter and
do the needful.
Thanking you
Yours sincerely|

Answer:
Bitter Days of Life [10 Marks]
My mother eyed me with suspicion. I dared not look at her. Knowing that I was late from school five days
consecutively, I could not offer an acceptable explanation. I knew she did not believe that I had extra-
curricular activities every day and reach home, after 5pm. However, realising that she had little choice but to
accept my explanation, she told me that dinner was in the refrigerator and to warm it up in the microwave
oven. She had to rush for her night shift at the local clinic.
Ever since we lost our dad in an accident, my mother became the sole bread-winner. I was the eldest among
the four siblings. I regularly coach them in their studies. But all of us missed dad tremendously. He was a
model father and husband. Life was cruelly snatched away from him at a very young age of 40. It was a
freak accident that killed him. He was walking towards his car parked at a construction site when a crane
accidentally dropped a huge metal on him. He died instantly and mom has never recovered from this tragic
incident.

However, she managed to pull through for our sake and secured a job at the clinic. Dad did not leave much
behind. We basically lived from hand to mouth. That’s when it dawned on me that I had to do my part for
the family. I knew mother would not agree, but I threw caution to the wind and managed to get a part-time
job at a fast food joint. I worked three hours a day and managed to bring home some money. One day, while
I was busy serving the customers, I was startled to see mother standing opposite the counter waiting to place
an order. She appeared perplexed and shocked at the same time. I took her orders and saw her returning to a
table occupied by my siblings! My supervisor who saw my worried expression and who knew about my
family situation quickly volunteered to take over my duties. Slowly, I removed my apron and joined my
family. Mother was already crying and so were my siblings. She covered my hands with hers and told me
that she was grateful for my help. I could not hold back my tears and hugged her. I realised that I should not
have hidden such a big secret from her. But my beloved mother understood my situation and reassured me
everything would be alright.

The day I lost my wallet [10 Marks]
When I was seven years old, I was given a small wallet to keep my pocket-money. It made me feel grown up
and I carried it proudly in my hip pocket. One day, during recess in school, I discovered that my wallet was
missing. I searched all my pockets but could not find it. There were a couple of notes or so in the wallet and
without it I could not buy anything to eat. I was close to tears. It was not so much because of losing my
precious wallet but because I might get a scolding from my parents. Anyhow I went hungry that day.
After recess I was in no mood to study at all. I kept thinking about how I lost my wallet and what my parents
would do to me. How was I going to explain the loss? I did not know whether someone had pinched it from
my pocket or it had merely fallen out. I prayed that someone would find it and return it to me. My prayers
came with no reply. Fortunately I did not have to pay to get on my school bus. My fare was paid for on a
monthly basis. When I told my mother about my loss, she was clearly angry. I received a long lecture about
my carelessness. When my father came home, I received another lecture. Also I was told that there would
not be any more wallets for me until I got older. So for the rest of the year and the following two years, I
carried my pocket-money in my pocket, without any wallet. I am glad to say I never lost any money again. I
had learned to be more careful. It is not pleasant to lose something and then get scolded for losing it.

(a) Mandela was pained by his inability to thank his comrades who were unable to see what their sacrifices
had brought. He remembered the sufferings and courage of thousands of patriots, who fought for the same
cause.
(b) When 'Dakota' took off from Paris, the sky was quite clear. The moon was coming up in the east and the

credit also goes to his mother for recognizing his inclinations and curiosity. She not only encouraged and
supported him, but also provided the required stimulus through books and other materials.

Q 10. Answer the following question in [100-150 words].
Valli was overcome with sadness when she sees the dead cow on her return journey. Are you also sensitive
to the plight of animals? If so how do you think the world can be made safer for animals?
OR
Wanda Petronski was a bag of surprises! Do you agree to this statement? How did this affect all the people
around her?
Answer:
Valli saw the same cow she had seen while going towards the city, lying dead by the side of the road. She
was haunted by the sight of the cow and her excitement to see the outsjde world diminished. Yes I am hurt
when I see the condition of animals everywhere. It is sad that animals are often found dead on the busy
roads of Indian cities. Not only this we also see a number other cruel acts inflicted on animals. Human
beings feel that they are the owners of the universe and animals have to abide by their whims and fancies.
Man has exploited animals for his own selfish needs. A horse is made work the whole day to earn money for
his owner. A bull is made to work on the fields to till the land. Stray dogs are maltreated and some die of
terrible diseases. Cows are left to wander in the streets by their owners. They are not intelligent enough to
understand the dangers of speeding vehicles and sometimes they have to give up their lives'. We have also
not left the wild animals alone. Many species are endangered as a result of too much hunting and to feed the
need and greed of man.
We have to become more aware and sensitive about protecting the animal life around us. We have to realize
that animals play an important, role in our survival as they maintain the ecological balance. God has made
man as the most intelligent creature on the earth and so now it is high time we use our intelligence to realize
the danger we are putting ourselves into and act accordingly to preserve the animal around us. We have to
follow the policy of live and let live. [8]
OR
Yes I agree to this statement because when the reader is introduced to Wanda she is a quiet, shy and
seemingly stupid girl. Wanda is the owner of the hundred dresses in the book’s title. She is of Polish
heritage and has a name most people struggle to pronounce. She is from a poor family and lives in the poor
area of town with her brother and father. She is a quiet child who rarely says anything and never laughs.
Wanda is teased, not because she wears the same dress to school every day, but because she claims to have
one hundred dresses at home. At first the other children believe her, assuming that she means party dresses
that would be inappropriate at school, but when she tells them she has all kind of dresses, the teasing begins.
She never speaks up against the girls teasing her, but says nothing whilst they do so. Wanda has a
tremendous capacity for forgiveness, extending friendship to Peggy and Maddie after she has moved away.
Wanda surprises everyone with her incredible talent as an artist and designer, the hundred dresses being
stylish and eye-catching designs on paper, for which she wins the drawing and colour contest at school and
which shows her in a very different light among her peers. Wanda teaches her peers to he humble and
unassuming and that talent will speak for itself. She teaches them the art of forgiving friends .Her absence is
felt by her friends especially Peggy and Maddie and so she is the real success in her class. [8]
Q 11. Answer any one of the following in 100 -150 words : [8]
"What really hurt the feelings of the narrator in the story, 'The Hack Driver'? [100 -150 words]
OR
Why did Fowler become white faced at the end of the story?
Answer:
The narrator was really fed up of his job. As he hated his work, he thought about running away to his own
home town and become a lawyer right away. He was always under the impression that the country people
were honest, simple and helpful. Such impression made him gullible because he was easily befooled by the
hack driver who was himself Oliver Lutkins. He took him around the village wasting time looking for
himself. He not only charged him money for the 'service' but also subjected him to immense ridicule of his
village folk and his mother. He felt like a fool who was easily coaxed into believing that Lutkins was
someone else whereas Lutkins was with him the whole day.
He felt really shameful of his act and realised that he should have done his homework more carefully about
finding out the details of Oliver Lutkins before hand. [8]
OR
When both, Fowler and Ausable, entered Ausable's room, they saw Max, a man with a pistol, standing
halfway across the room. They were taken aback. He had come for the same report that Ausable had come to
collect. It was a secret document of some missiles. Ausable cursed the balcony under the window saying that
it was the second time in the month someone had come into his room through it. Fowler gazed out of the
window, but saw no balcony. Max said that he had come in through the door, with the help of a pass key.
Just then, the door bell rang. Ausable said it was the police to check the extra protection ensuring safety of
the papers. Max decided to jump out of the window into the balcony to evade the police. As he jumped out,
he screamed as there was no balcony to the window on the sixth floor. Ausable did not use physical force
but only mind power to overcome the danger. Thus, Fowler was left white faced at the end of the story. This
is how Ausable got out of such a dangerous and critical situation and killed his enemy without using any
weapon. Fowler understood that Ausable was intelligent and ruthless in his work.
