04 - COURSE SPECIFICATIONS

The JET FAM / MCC course is conducted over a 15 day period, comprising 5 days of ground studies and
further 8 days of four hour shared simulator details in our A320 FNPT II jet simulator, plus 2 extra days off
during the simulator training to digest the newly gained knowledge. The course is divided into 2 phases –
Theory and Practical

Week 1 – Ground-School training: During the classroom phase, students explore the theory of working
within a group situation and the team skills that are employed on the flight deck to enhance crew
performance. They examine the relationships between man, machine and the environment and how, by
adopting a professional approach, individuals can interact more effectively with, and consequently
influence the interface between these elements.

While still in the classroom, trainees will be instructed in flight deck management and operational issues
that will arise during the simulator phase of the course, in particular the application of Standard Operating
Procedures, (SOPs) during normal, non-normal and emergency flight conditions.

Week 2 and 3 – Simulator Training: Simulator training is conducted in 4 hour details over a 10 da y
period, comprising 4 general air work multi crew exercises and 4 Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT)
sequences. The final detail involves an assessment leading, for successful trainees, to a JAR-FCL MCC
certificate.

Content includes key advanced handling skills development, automation management with an
introduction to auto-flight and flight director system operation; IFR navigation and procedural exercises,
normal and non -normal system management and e mergency procedures with the emphasis on m ulti
crew operation in a Line Orientated Flight Training environment. Adverse weather operations and
procedures are introduced including wind-shear and microburst recognition and recovery training.

(*) Threat and Error Management (TEM) is an essential element in the multi crew operation training, and so
is integrated throughout the training program, including most of the ground-school modules. The TEM model
provides a non-technical tool to help pilots identify and manage threats (hazards) and errors during flight.
The added value that TEM brings to students is that it focuses simultaneously on the operating environment
(such as Liveware-Hardware interfaces) and the humans working in that environment (such as Liveware-
Liveware interface).

01 - OUTLINE OF THE FLIGHT EXERCISES

There will be 8 simulator sessions of approximately 4 hours each, with half the time spent as Pilot Flying
(PF), and the remainder as Pilot Non-Flying (PNF).
Since most of you will be operating as first-officers in your early career, your pilot flying details will be
flown from the right hand seat.

The early exercises are designed to familiarize you with the handling characteristics and systems of the
simulator, which is based on an Airbus A320. However, it is stressed that this is not intended to be a type
conversion the main objectives being to develop multi-crew operating skills.

Each pilot will fly similar details in exercises 1-4, but in order to provide a little variety, the remaining
exercises will deal with several events and emergencies, being handled as either PF or PNF but not
always from both seats.

The final session (LOFT #3) will verify that training course objectives are met and will evaluate your skills
and attitudes before the entry into the initial Airbus Pilot Transition (APT) training course if applicable.
You will need to have a sound knowledge of all of the standard calls and SOPs and you must know all
altimeter setting procedures and altimeter calls.

The task sharing and callouts will conform to the Airbus technical training documentation. The procedures
used are those provided in the Generic Flight Crew Operations Manual (FCOM) and QRH.

You will need to know when to prompt PF should there be any deviations from the required flight profiles
and are advised to familiarize yourself with the simulator checklists for normal, abnormal and emergency
procedures

For sessions 4-8, the simulator will be initialized at the holding point in TRANSIT configuration with the
APU running, APU BLEED selected ON and FUEL PUMPS to OFF position. Each student will conduct
the cockpit preparation applicable to his area of responsibility including the FMS set up

You are not attempt to commit to memory any of the checks other than the vital actions needed to deal an
emergency descent. However, and although not intended to be a comprehensive list and in no specific
order, the more prudent of you will be familiar with the following:

• ECAM Management.
• RTOs, EFATOs procedures.
• MAYDAY and PAN transmissions.
• Smoke procedures.
• Pressurization problems.
• Wind shear recognition and subsequent action.
• Instrument flight procedures, (all types of approaches and holding patterns).

03 - SIMULATOR HANDLING TIPS

The following is given as guidance to help with the flow of the lessons and the accuracy of the student’s
hand flying.

AFS: During the Jet Familiarization phase, all take-offs are performed with the FDs OFF. The use of AP/FD
with selected modes will be progressively introduced throughout the course in order to reinforce the task
sharing concept when utilizing automation.

AUTO-THRUST (A/THR): All sessions are conducted with the A/THR OFF. The Instructor will disconnect
the A/THR by pressing and holding the Instinctive Disconnect push-Button (IDB) for 15 seconds when the
engines are running. This will prevent the auto-thrust from engaging unexpectedly.

CLEAN UP: Above the acceleration altitude set target speed 250kts, set climb thrust and 7°5 N.U. Select
Flap 1 above F speed. Select Flap 0 above S speed. Accelerate to 250kts. Adjust pitch approx. 11° N.U. for
climbing speed 250kt.

DECELERATION: At IDLE thrust in level flight, deceleration from 250kt to VAPP (135kt) takes about 6 miles
with successive changes of configuration. GD+10 select CONF1, S+10 select CONF2, then GEAR Down,
CONF3 and FULL. Plan to level off ~3 miles from HOLDING Fix to decelerate from 250kt to GD.

FUEL: Select fuel freeze option on Instructor console for JET FAM sessions.

FMS: Insert the bare minimum required for JET FAM sessions. Set FROM/TO; Departure runway with no
SID; F-PLN discontinuity and the arrival with an ILS no STAR. This works well and ensures the FMS
sequences by itself.

HEADING Correction: Use a bank angle equal to one-half the difference between the present heading and
the desired heading. e.g. if off 10° on heading, use 5 degrees of bank to correct back to desired heading.

LEVEL OFF Procedure: Leveling off by 10 % of V/S rate (Above FL300, use 500 feet).

LEVEL FLIGHT LOW LEVEL (56 tons): 250kts / FL70 = approx. 2.5 degrees nose up and 64 % N1. In the
circuit (56 tons): GD speed, 196kts = 5.5° NU 56 % N1. S speed, 179kts = 7 NU 58 % N1. F2 speed + L/G
DN 138kts = 8 NU 65 % N1.

LEVEL TURN LOW LEVEL: 25 degrees AOB / approx. 3 degrees NU / N1 target +2%

NAVAIDS: Students will be taught how to use the MCDU RAD NAV Page and to set the NAVAIDS.

PERFORMANCE: Take-off speeds with FLEX/TOGA will be calculated by the student using the appropriate
RTOW tables (ELT JET/MCC training course only).

PITCH (Attitude) Changes: Mach x 1,000 or TAS / 0.6 = V/S fpm for 1° p itch change. E.g. if cruising at
Mach 0.8: 0.8 x 1,000=800fpm or at FL70 - 250kts IAS (278kt TAS) = 460fpm for 1° pitch change.

ROLL-OUT Procedure: Δ HEADING TO GO = BANK (°) / 3

With 25 degrees of bank, start roll-out at 8 degrees in advance.

SOPs: Cockpit preparations are performed as per Airbus TRANSIT STOP Procedures (Items marked by *).
The Normal Flight Deck preparation will be introduced later in the Type Rating course.

STEEP TURNS: FL 70 – 250kt requires ~ 4° NU pitch and 68 % N1 to maintain a level 45° bank turn.

Note max and minimum speeds. Maneuver Margin.

HANDLING – HIGH ALTITUDE

AP/FD OFF, NO FPV. Remain in the vicinity of MOU VOR. POS FREEZE as appropriate.
Emphasis small pitch change induces large V/S deviation.

Make a level turn at 25° Bank angle. Note the speed margin decreases. Do not adjust thrust.
Attempt to increase bank angle towards 40°. Observe reduced maneuver margin. Avoid speed to decrease
into amber strip. Do not adjust thrust.

10’ Wings level, set CLB = MCT = TOGA thrust ~92.5% N1 to recover M.78. Note the lack of performance to
accelerate due to the drag curve. Handling option – descend to regain cruise M.78. Let the trainee to fly and
stabilize at FL350 – M.78.

Engage AP/FD ON. Turn inbound MOU VOR using the MCDU DIR TO Function. Point out how the automation
works at high altitude (~15° bank angle). Adjust thrust ~89% to maintain speed. Note the turn radius.

Teaching point: hand flying / excessive maneuvering is not recommended at high altitude. Point out speed is
easy to lose but hard to gain at high altitude. Avoid amber speed.

FREEZE POS - DISCUSSION

Allow the crew to evaluate the options available and to agree a common decision.
Instructor facilitates the discussion as appropriate.

Instruction and keys:

• There are many types of surprising events in aviation. Potentially any event or combination of events can
produce a situation that can develop rapidly in an unexpected way.

• Surprise and unexpected events alter the decision-making process and may influence how a situation is
2.05 perceived. Pilots should take extra care in situations where the element of surprise may play a part in the
process of the flight.
• For circumstances not covered by procedures, apply Decision Making tools such as, for example
‘DECIDE’ (Decision Making process). They allow the crew to complete the analysis of the situation and
making more appropriate decisions.

INSTRUCTOR ONLY
• Time is the critical factor; Workload = Time Available – Time Required.

• Fuel reserve approaching minimum - Flight crews short of fuel must declare a PAN or MAYDAY to be
sure of being given the appropriate priority.
