TOPIC UNIT III NATURAL HAZARDS, MITIGATION and ADAPTATION

A. Geological Processes and Hazards
CONTENT STANDARD The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different hazards by
geological processes ( earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides)
CULMINATING The learners should be able to make a survey to assess possible geological
PERFORMANCE hazards that the community may experience.
STANDARD
LEARNING The learners should be able to:
COMPETENCIES LC1. Describe the various hazards that may happen in the event of
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides.
LC 3. Using hazard maps, identify areas prone to hazards brought about by
earthquakes , volcanic eruptions, and landslide
LC 4. Give practical ways of coping with geological hazards caused by
earthquakes , volcanic eruptions, and landslide
LC 6. Suggest ways to mitigate the occurrence of landslide in your
community

REGROUP LC1, andLC3

COMPETENCIES LC4 and LC6

SPECIFIC LEARNING At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
OBJECTIVES
1. Identify and explain the hazards brought about by geologic
processes
2. Using hazards maps, identify areas prone to hazards brought about
by earthquake, volcanic eruptions, and landslide
3. Suggest practical ways to mitigate geologic hazards
TIME ALLOTMENT 1.5 hrs
I. INTRODUCTION Picture Analysis TEACHER’S TIP(S)
( 10 minutes) Study the given illustrations. Show to the class
the three images
about geologic
processes
Guide questions:
1. What did you observe in the three pictures?
2. What is the commonality among the three
images?

Discuss the specific objectives that the students will

be learning in the topic.
1. Identify and explain the hazards brought
about by geologic processes
2. Using hazards maps, identify areas prone to
hazards brought about by earthquake,
volcanic eruptions, and landslide
3. Suggest practical ways to help lessen geologic
hazards

II. MOTIVATION Motivational questions: The teacher will

Geologic Processes are natural events that humans ask a question to
( 5 minutes) cannot control, can it affect our daily living? In what elicit from the
way? students the word
hazard then the
teacher will further
discuss it.
III. INSTRUCTION / A. Situation Analysis through Video Clip
DELIVERY Presentation ( 15 minutes)
( 55 minutes) The teacher will present video clips about
earthquake, volcanic eruption and landslides,
afterwards the student will analyze and list the
particular hazards brought by the three geological
processes.
B. Sharing of students’ responses and
Discussion about Geologic Hazards
(20 minutes)

C. Web Simulation (10 minutes)

The students will visit an online hazard map
and they need to identify if their area is prone
to hazards brought about by earthquake,
volcanic eruptions, and landslide.

D. Action Plan (25 minutes)

The class will be divided into two groups and The students will
they need to create an action plan that shows write their output
the following: in a cartolina
Group 1 - Give five practical ways of coping
with geological hazards caused by earthquakes,
volcanic eruptions, and landslide
Action Plan
Geological Potential Ways of coping
Hazard Hazard
1.
2.
3.

Group 2 - Suggest five ways to mitigate the

occurrence of landslide in your community

IV. PRACTICE Identification

( 5 minutes) Instructions: Identify the following hazards whether it
is caused by volcanic eruption, earthquake or
landslide. Note: Answer for each item can be one or two.
1. Ash fall
2. Lava
3. Fire
4. Liquefaction
5. Mudflow
6. Lahar
7. Debris Avalanche
8. Pyroclastic Flow
9. Tsunami
10. Group rupture

V. ENRICHMENT Assignment: Further Research

( 5 minutes) The students will research about the following:
1. Geological hazards that happened in the
Philippines for the past five years.
2. Positive effects of volcanic eruption
VI. EVALUATION Essay
( 10 minutes) 1. Is your family ready for possible earthquake?
Why or why not?
2. How would an earthquake affect your family
and community?
