Jollibee versus Mcdonald’s
Mcdonald’s and Jollibee are the two major fast food chains that are leading in the
Philippines and have won the hearts of every Filipino. Both have been in the business for a
long time and are known to be rivals in the fast food chain industry. How do we know
which is the better fast food chain in terms of their food products, cost, service, cleanliness,
characters, and quality of food?
Jollibee and Mcdonald’s have similar items in their food products. For instance, both
fast food chains include breakfast meals, hamburgers, fries, spaghetti, and the classic fried
chicken. Although, most of their menus are similar, they have food products that the other
doesn’t have. Jollibee has items that makes them stand out such as the jolly hotdog,
lumpiang shanghai, palabok, and garlic pepper beef rice. Meanwhile, Mcdonald’s also has
chicken nuggets, fish fillet, iced coffee, twister fries and milk tea mcfloat. Mcdonald’s brings
a more American approach in terms of cuisine, while Jollibee offers more local options that
are catered to the taste of the Filipino people.
There is a huge difference in the price points between Jollibee and Mcdonalds. A case in
point, Jollibee ChickenJoy costs p 89.00 while Mcdonalds Chicken Mcdo is P 92.00.
Moreover, a Jollibee Yum Burger is P 30.00, whereas a Burger Mcdo costs P 82.00. In
comparing the price points of french fries, Jollibee’s medium fries is P 35.00, while
Mcdonald’s medium fries costsP 60.00. One similarity is that both of their Vanilla Cones
costs P 10.00. Overall, Jollibee has cheaper price points than Mcdonalds. Jollibee has price
points that caters to the mass and is available for everybody. Jollibee wins for reasonable
cost.
The services offered in Jollibee and Mcdonald’s also have similarities and differences.
To illustrate, they both offer home delivery, drive-thru, online ordering such as GRAB and
Food Panda, and the usual dine in or takeout. They are open for 24 hours and serves four
kinds of meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert. Moreover, they have Priority Lanes
and offer PWD Discounts and bathroom stalls for those with disabilities. Furthermore,
they cater for events such as birthday parties and reunions. But which service is more
favored by the customers? In a survey we conducted entitled, A Survey on Mcdonald’s and
Jollibee: A Test of Cleanliness/ Ambiance, Food Quality, and Service in the University of Asia
and the Pacific, most of the participants voted for Mcdonalds for better service compared to
Jollibee. To elaborate, Mcdonald’s has an electronic queuing system and self-order
machines whereas Jollibee has the traditional wait-in-line counter. The participants also
agreed that since Mcdonald’s is more expensive, they have a convenient and better service
than Jollibee.
Cleanliness, so the expression goes, is next to godliness, as it plays an important role in

the overall customer experience. In a survey we conducted entitled, A Survey on Mcdonald’s
and Jollibee: A Test of Cleanliness/ Ambiance, Food Quality, and Service in the University of
Asia and the Pacific, shows that although cleanliness and ambiance depends on the location
of the branch, Mcdonald’s is favored to be recognized as a fast-food chain that provides
their customers with cleanliness and ambiance. Meanwhile, customers have encountered a
lot more Jollibee branches that are not as clean as Mcdonald’s. Results show that the price
also has something to do with the cleanliness and ambiance of the restaurant. Since the
product price of Mcdonald’s is higher than Jollibee’s, you are not only paying for the
ambiance but also the staff is more at hand. Jollibee, whose price is very affordable, will
have a number of customers, therefore it is very hard to maintain the place.
In terms of mascots, the two offer colorful and entertaining characters for the
amusement and enjoyment of both young and adult customers. Both of their mascots
represent and embody their branding which makes them stand out from the crowd.
Mcdonald’s has Ronald Mcdonald’s, Grimace, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, Officer Big
Mac, Fry Kids, Birdie the Early Bird, and Professor Mcdonald’s. Mcdonald’s Playland
featured aspects of characters from Mcdonaldland, a mass-market television campaign
launched in 1971, that established a fictional universe which was inhabited by Ronald
McDonald and his comrades. On the other hand, the Jollibee mascot was decided by a
management consultant from the 80’s named Manuel Lumba, to epitomize the Filipino
people that are hard-working, good-hearted, and happy, even though they’re busy. Other
mascots were also made for the Jollibee fast-food chain, with many of them featured in
Jollitown, a children's show aired in the Philippines.
Food Quality is determined by the freshness, taste, and presentation of the product. In
a survey we conducted entitled, A Survey on Mcdonald’s and Jollibee: A Test of Cleanliness/
Ambiance, Food Quality, and Service in the University of Asia and the Pacific, results show
that there are times wherein both fast food chains serve food that is stale and not freshly
cooked. Moreover, leaning towards the freshness of ingredients, Jollibee was favored to
have passed the test. Mcdonald’s, on the other hand, had customers lean towards the taste
of the food rather than the freshness of the ingredients. Overall, both fast food chains were
favored in terms of food packaging.
After considering all the factors, features, and facets of each fast-food restaurant, we
can say that there are a lot of things to consider in determining how one wins over the
other. In terms of the food quality and price point, Jollibee has been favored to have passed
the qualifications of the customers and consumers. Meanwhile, in terms of services offered
and cleanliness, Mcdonald’s outperforms the competing fast-food chain. Nonetheless,
Jollibee and Mcdonald’s are one in the same with regard to mascots and food products,
depending on the fondness and preference of the customer/ consumer.
