Leo Eland Eland was born in Salatiga on Java in 1884. Leo Eland is the widest-known and most
characteristic exponent of the “Beauteous Indies” – style. He was largely self-taught and was
advised by the painter C. L. Dake Jr. Between 1920 and 1929 he moved to the Netherlands and
worked in The Hague. Leo Elands oeuvre consists mainly colored, smooth painted Indonesian
landscapes, Majestic mountains, palm trees, a rural settlement and agricultural scene, also
described some figures, coastal view and market scenes. He produced among others, a large
number of dioramas and panoramas paintings for Colonial exhibitions. It is known that he went
along plantations in Indonesia where he offered the owners to paint it. Leo Eland died in The
Hague 1952. In the market scenes, Eland’s painting employs focal distance to reduce the villagers
in the picture to small figures whose individually features are indistinct and whose exertions are
all but invisible. Distant peasant figures often appeared as iconic types of Indonesian completed
with huge trees on the surroundings.

Balinese themes are Han Snel’s specialism, in particular figures done in a more or expressionist style:
he himself prefers to describe his manner with its very conspicuous, curved lines, as ‘roundism’. In
his works, Snel focused his attention on the beauty of Balinese women. His colors were varied and
lean towards the primary with contrasting area of dark shading. His visual imageries, subdued colors
and fine lines captured the essence of Ubud and the island as a place where serenity reigned and
simple people led an honest life.

Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was
well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted
for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with
the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from
his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. The artist gain the
public recognition after winning a painting competition held in conjunction with the Netherland's Queen Juliana

His great effort, discipline, integrity and passion had made him find his very own special style of painting. Arifien’s
painting is rich of characters and style. He kept developing his talent which later known as an artist with Fauvism
style. Since, he did some architecture and interior design, his paintings were mostly exposing the interior design
angle. How he arranged the properties of space in his paintings, and how he carved space with objects made
his paintings style significantly with others.

Born in Malang, June 29, 1961. He graduated from Indonesian Academy of Arts in Yogyakarta in 1985. Koeboe Sarawan
spent his younger years learning Batik then he started to paint. Koeboe Sarawan’s great asset is his magnificent talent
to portray visual reality in detail and realistic manner. He seriously capture the detail form but once he act humorously
and critical. His works are represented in more attractive was a way with the exact choices of object. The themes
revealed in his paintings were a projection of honesty that attracts viewers to learn more about the painter’s goal through
his works. His works are mostly categorized as surrealistic though actually they are more realistic in symbolic way. His
ideas are still dominated by his surroundings which represent his social experiences. The painting looks as if it was 3
dimensional, utilizing excellent realism techniques, so every details and perspective of the work seem very realistic.

Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused
dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such
as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is
considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere
shrouding the figures are gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an
extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves,
slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head
and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands.

The present lot is one of Lee Man Fong special work that contains high artistic value towards a simple still
life object. The inspiration perhaps perceived from Lee Man Fong’s experience in observing his surroundings
and nature. Lee Man Fong able to present a harmonious combination between bright and dark tone with

S. Sudjojono paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he person-
ally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. It’s an
image that sometimes gets into his works because humor was always passing
by his life. Because of his sense of humor, his works tends to trigger a smile or
laughter if not poetic, sentimental, emotional or heroic. His works often come to
us in caricature spirit. He used a combination of fantasy and memory to create
his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from
places that he had seen in books or actually visited. S. Sudjojono paintings have
a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto
canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though
they were snapshots of views that appealed to him.
