    Some things on the list below might require ordering online, please order as far in advance as
    possible as many things get held up on the supply side, especially brushes.

    Small sketchbook or notebook
    Plus pen/pencil for taking notes

    Binder
    3 rings with removable plastic sheet protectors for saving handouts

    Drawing materials (for preparatory drawing)

    Panel

    GessoBord brand gessoed panels,
    (1) 5x7 or 5x5
    (1) 8x10

    Brushes
    Required: Robert Simmons “White Sable” brushes with the maroon handles and white
    bristles. Some sites say they are for acrylic or watercolor, but they are for oils, too.
    Filberts, 2 each of sizes #10, #4, and #1
    Rounds, 2 each of size #1
    (This means two identical brushes of each size)

    Palette
    Medium­size wooden oval style with a thumb hole
    (If it’s brand new, please brush on thick coats of linseed oil every night for several days/weeks
    before the class, or it will absorb all your oil paint.)

    Better palette, optional: The New Wave Palette is an excellent wooden
    palette with a much better surface for mixing, and has an ergonomic design.
    PLEASE NOTE: The New Wave Palettes have a special coating and you do
    NOT need to treat them with linseed oil.

    Palette Knife
    Stepped and flexible metal, diamond shaped blade, about 2” blade (not the tiny
    one, and not the flat “spatula” style) ­ type with “Made in Italy” stamped on handle
    is the best.

    * Only the starred paint will be used for the first several
    sessions.

    NOTE: This method uses very small amounts of paint.
    Don’t buy cheap paint! Cheap paints don’t save you any
    money, because you just end up using more paint.
    Jars and Containers

    Jars Four (4) very small (~1 inch tall) glass jars with tight lids and straight sides (sold in art
    supply store near turps and oils) or similar jars from home

    Medium cup
    1 small aluminum or glass painting cup (sold in art supply store) for holding
    medium during painting session
    Oils and Solvents
    Refined Linseed Oil ­ small bottle (read label carefully, there are many kinds of Linseed oil)

    Stand Oil ­ small bottle (this is actually just a thicker form of linseed oil)

    Odorless Mineral Spirits (Turpenoid or Gamsol brands)

    Natural Turpenoid (Martin/F Weber brand) (the non­toxic orange oil, green can ­ ONLY for
    cleaning brushes, never get it into your paint)

    NOTE: For those flying in for a workshop, don’t fly with any of the above linseed oil, stand oil, or
    solvents (they are flammable and you can’t put them in your luggage). Instructor will provide you
    with the bottled oils and solvents you need. Please bring your own oil paints. Email instructor for
    instructions about how to fly with oil paints in your checked luggage.
    Please mix up your mediums in the small jars at home:
    ● Small 1” glass jar of “LEAN” underpainting medium (2 parts linseed, 1 part odorless turp,
    use fine sharpie to mark parts on side of glass and to write recipe on lid)
    ● Small 1” glass jar of “FAT” painting medium (1 part linseed, 1 part stand oil, use fine
    sharpie to mark parts on side of glass and to write recipe on lid)
    ● Small 1” glass jar of varnish mixture: 1 part Dammar varnish, 1 part Turpenoid  ­ 50/50
    ● Fill one Silicoil jar filled above coils with Odorless Turpenoid (blue can) or Gamsol (these
    tend to leak in transport, wrap in plastic bag)
    ● Fill second Silicoil jar above coils with Natural Turpenoid (green can) (these tend to leak
    in transport, wrap in plastic bag)
    ● Optional: Remove brush cleaning tray from Newton can, instead put in the Silicoil coil, for
    better brush cleaning, in a non­leak can.

    Hardware Store Shop Cloth Paper Towels
    Blue roll paper towels called “shop cloths”, available in hardware stores. All white
    kitchen paper towels, including “Viva” paper towels, are too linty for this method of
    painting.
