Grade Slab Design for SW Pier - CSIA

1.0 Introduction
This document illustrates the design of Grade slab for the proposed SW Pier as per PCA (Portland Cement
Association) method.

2.0 Basic data

Grade of Concrete = M25
Type of Natural Subgrade Soil = Stiff clay (Modulus of sub-grade, k = 50 pci & CBR = 2% or less)
Type of fill material = Moorum filling (Modulus of sub-grade, k = 50 pci)

3.0 Loading details

The floor slab is subjected to live load (uniformly distributed load) as well as wall loads and loading from
machinery placed on pedestals. The details of the loadings on Grade Slab:

1. Live load = 0.50 T/m2

2
2. Floor load = 0.24 T/m
3. Machinery/ Equipment load = 1.0 T/m2
4. Wall load = 2.00 T/m
5. Load on each pedestal = 2.11 T (Size of pedestal = 0.3m x 0.3m x 0.5m )
6. c/c distance of pedestal = 2.00 m

The thickness of the grade slab is calculated for each of the following loads:
2
1. UDL = 0.5 + 0.24 + 1.0 = 1.74 T/m
2. Wall load = 2.0 T/m
3. Static load = 2.11 T on area of 0.3m x 0.3m @ c/c spacing of 2m.

The capacity of grade slab to carry any vehicle loading will have to be considered separately and not
included in the present analysis.

4.0 Sub-base
Moorum of minimum 300 mm layer compacted to 95 % MDD and OMC, and CBR = 5%. Top layer of sub
grade should be well compacted before placing the sub-base layer to provide proper bond between the sub
grade and sub base layers.

5.0 Base course

P.C.C layer of 75 mm thickness should be laid over the sub-base layer.

6.0 Analysis and design

2
1) Uniformly Distributed Load of 1.74 T/m

Modulus of Subgrade Reaction on top of Subbase, k = 50 pci (Ref 1, Fig.1.)

Compressive Strength of Concrete, fc = 3625 psi

Flexural Strength of Concrete (Modulus of Rupture),

MR = 9 * √fc = 541.87 psi at 28 days

Allowable Load on Grade Slab, W = 0.123 ft√ (hk)

h = Slab Thickness, in.
k = Modulus of Subgrade Reaction, pci = 50 pci
FS = 3.0
ft = Allowable Working Stress= MR / FS = 180.6 psi
W = 1.74 T/m2 = 356.7 psf

Thickness of Slab required, h = W 2 / (0.1232 * f t2 * k)

= 5.16 in
= 131.1 mm

So provide slab of 150 mm (6 inches) thickness.

Settlement calculations:

Consider the average depth of clay deposit (H) = 4.0 m

Overburden pressure at mid-depth of clay deposit (p0) = (1.8-1) x 4/2 = 1.6 T/m2

Pre-consolidation pressure (pc) = 0.82 kg/cm2 = 8.2 T/m2

2
Pressure increment (∆p) = 0.15 x (2.5-1) + 0.075 x (2.4-1) + 0.3 x (1.7-1) + 1.74 = 2.28 T/m

Since, pc > (p0+∆p), therefore settlement will be Sc = [CrH0/ (1+e0)] log10 [(p0+∆p)/p0]

Initial void ratio (e0) = 0.77

Recompression index (Cr) = 0.01

Therefore, settlement (Sc) = 8.69 mm

Rigidity factor = 0.80

Therefore, corrected settlement (Sc) = 0.8 x 8.69 = 7 mm

2) a. Interior wall Load of 2 T/m

Modulus of Subgrade Reaction on top of Subbase, k = 50 pci (Ref 1, Fig.1.)

Compressive Strength of Concrete, fc = 3625 psi

From Reference (3), Table 4, Chapter 5,

Flexural Strength of Concrete (Modulus of Rupture),

MR = Flexural strength = 9 * √fc = 541.87 psi at 28 days
FS = 2.5
ft = Allowable Working Stress= MR / FS = 216.7 psi
w = Wall load = 2.0 T/m = 1344.3 lb/ft

SM = 12t /6 = 2t
Ec = 57000 √fc = 3431854.46 psi
L = [12k/4EcI] 1/4
3 1/4 3/4
= [(12 x 50)/ (4 x 3431854.46 x t )] = 0.0813/t

In case of internal wall, the wall load (lb/ft) = 4 x ft x SM x L.

Thus the thickness of the slab in the internal wall portion = 7 inches (175 mm)

Increased slab thickness for the area where wall load is acting = (7 – 6) inches
= 1 inches

From Reference (3), Table 4, for the increased slab thickness of 1 inch, the thickened slab width is 3 feet.
Therefore extend the thickened slab for 450 mm both side of the wall.

b. Edge wall Load of 2 T/m

Modulus of Subgrade Reaction on top of Subbase, k = 50 pci (Ref 1, Fig.1.)

Compressive Strength of Concrete, fc = 3625 psi

From Reference (3), Table 5, Chapter 5,

Flexural Strength of Concrete (Modulus of Rupture),

MR = Flexural strength = 9 * √fc = 541.87 psi at 28 days
FS = 2.5
ft = Allowable Working Stress= MR / FS = 216.7 psi
w = Wall load = 2.0 T/m = 1344.3 lb/f
SM = 12t2/6 = 2t2
Ec = 57000 √fc = 3431854.46 psi
1/4
L = [12k/4EcI]
= [(12 x 50)/ (4 x 3431854.46 x t3)] 1/4 = 0.0813/t3/4

In case of internal wall, the wall load (lb/ft) = 3.1017 x ft x SM x L.

Thus the thickness of the slab in the edge wall portion = 8 inches (200 mm)

Increased slab thickness for the area where wall load is acting = (8 – 6) inches
= 2 inches

From Reference (3), Table 5, for the increased slab thickness of 2 inches, the thickened slab width is 3 feet.
Therefore extend the thickened slab for 300 mm (1.5w) on the internal side of the wall.

3) Static load of 2.11t @ c/c spacing of 2m

Static Load = 2.11 T = 4.95 kips

Spacing of pedestal in y-direction = 2m
Spacing of pedestal in x-direction = 2m
Load area = 0.3 x 0.3 m2
Modulus of Subgrade Reaction on top of Subbase, k = 50 pci (Ref 1, Fig.1.)

Compressive Strength of Concrete, fc = 3625 psi

Flexural Strength of Concrete (Modulus of Rupture),

MR =Flexural strength = 9 * √fc = 541.87 psi at 28 days
FS = 3.0
ft = Allowable Working Stress= MR / FS = 180.6 psi

From Ref. (1) Fig. 7a,

Slab thickness for this load = 7 inches

= 175 mm.

Increase in the slab thickness for the area where load is acting = (7 – 4) inches
= 3 inches

From Reference (2), Fig. 3.1 for the increased slab thickness of 3 inches, the thickened slab width is 4 feet.
Therefore extend the thickened slab for 600 mm on all 4 sides of the load.
