What is a part of speech?

In English we use many words to talk or communicate with each other. These words are grouped

under different parts of speech according to their function.

There are eight parts of speech in English. They are -Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb, Adjective,

Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.

NOUNS

What are nouns?

Nouns are naming words. They are names given to any person, place, animal, thing, feelings or
quality. All objects that we see around us have some name with which we are able to identify or
know them. Those names or words are known as nouns.

Nouns are further grouped as common, proper, collective, abstract and material nouns. Nouns
have a singular and plural form too.

 Common nouns- It is the name given to common objects or things addressed in general,
that belong to a same group or class.
Examples -girl, tree, apple , animal, river, city, country etc.

 Proper nouns – It is the name given to a specific person, place or thing. A proper noun
always starts with a capital letter.
Examples - Ram, Meera, India, Hyderabad, The Ganges , January etc.

 Collective nouns–It is the name given to a group of persons or things taken together.
Examples – a bunch of grapes, a bundle of sticks, a flock of sheep, the army.

 Material nouns– It is the name of material of which a thing is made.


Examples – iron, gold, wood, cotton etc.

 Abstract Nouns–It is the name of a quality, an action or state.
Examples – honesty, happiness, wisdom, beauty, speech, childhood, laughter etc.
