SUBTOPIC: What are the negative and positive effects of human migration ?
INTRODUCTION
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another with the intention of settling
permanently or temporarily at a new location. The movement is often over long distances and
from one country to another for various reasons. Some of these include finding work or a better
life.
PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
The subtopic, “What are the advantages and disadvantages of human migration?” is an issue that
many are unaware of, which is why we have chosen this topic to research. Many people just
travel the world from one place to another without knowing the consequences and benefits of
doing it.
As English students, we expect to improve our writing and reading comprehension skills, by
researching and arranging the School Based Assessment .The way we intend to collect the
information for this SBA is through reading online articles and watching a documentary about
migration. We will use the information to write our reflections and written report.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Migration

Migration is moving from one place to another in search of food, pasture, education, habitat, and
employment. Many people in Kenya migrate. Others migrated to urban areas while others
migrated to In Kenya, some people come from other countries (immigrants) such as Tanzania,
Ethiopia, Uganda, and other parts. They come for tourism, to learn our cultures, interact with
Kenyans and also Kenyans would learn from them. Migration can be caused by drought,
conflicts, clashes and other events. Drought can make people migrate with their livestock in
search of food and pasture. Examples of this sort of migration are the Makai and Fulani
communities. Conflicts and clashes make many people migrate from their homes to save their
lives. When people migrate, the population of the country will decrease. When clashes occur,
many people will lose their lives too. For me, migration is not good because when you migrate to
another country, you might be discriminated against, hated, or oppressed or even killed. When
you migrate with your livestock to search for food and pasture, you might be killed and the
livestock might be stolen. Migration has advantages and disadvantages. Some of advantages
include: getting better places, interacting with people and learning their way of life.
Disadvantages include: being killed, livestock stolen or conflicts. When someone migrates,
he/she will start everything new such as looking for shelter and it will take a long time to interact
with people of a certain community. In some countries, some people might be merciful and they
will help each other while others will discriminate against the migrants and oppress them by
giving them a lot of work to do without giving them enough food. Later the immigrants will
become sick and might pass away. Surely, migration should be avoided and security provided to
keep people safe and enjoy life.

Reflection One (1): Overview and Relevance of Data
The first piece of data was an article written by Anita K. The article entitled, “Advantages and
Disadvantages of Migration”- Who says moving is better?” is mainly focused on the definition,
advantages and disadvantages as well as expound on the reasons people migrate .The article was
very clear and understandable as the topic was clearly explained and elaborated on. As human
beings, we desire to travel the world to find new jobs or a better place to live without knowing
the consequences and only the benefits. We have seen how human migration affects humans and
the environment. We personally sometimes contributed to this problem and after reading the
article by Anita K. We have learnt quite a lot about why people migrate and the advantages and
disadvantages of migrating. Our thoughts on Migration is that it can be good or bad once you
know the reason and outcome of migrating. We think that Migration mostly negatively affects
countries as there can be overpopulation on the country going and under population from the
country leaving.
Reflection Two (2): Use of Language
The three pieces of data have helped us to really understand Human Migration.The language in
the poem is formal and uses a number of figurative languages such as crawl through the
desert,home is the mouth of a shark and no one leaves home unless home chases you.
English and Social Studies has really helped us to understand Migration. Social Studies helped
us to understand why people migrate,while English helps us to further understand the poem.The
tone of the poem shows that the poet is concern about migration.The fundamental purpose of the
poem was to inform the readers about the struggles of Migration.

Reflection Three (3):

This SBA was not any easy task to undertake.As we progressed throughout
‘Migration-it’s advantages and disadvantages’ we realized that the SBA entailed more work than
we thought.
We have learnt that people migrate for many reasons mostly because of high crime,poverty and
personal choice. After all our research and understanding we now see the great impact that
migration has on the world.
