Experiment #2: Physical Properties of Matter
Objective:
To distinguish between intensive and extensive properties of matter.
Materials:
2 long candles (diameter of about 1.5 cm) Sharp Razor Blade
3 iron nails of different sizes Ruler
2 graduated cylinder (10 mL and 100 mL) 1 pc. of sitaw
Triple Beam Balance Graphing Paper
Procedure:
A.
1. Cut the candle into 3 parts of different lengths.
2. Measure the length of each in centimeters using ruler.
3. Determine the mass of each candle piece using triple beam balance.
4. Determine the volume of each by water displacement using the 100-mL graduated
cylinder. See to it that the entire candle is under water. If the candle floats, push it
down using a sitaw.
5. Record your observation in Table I.
6. Find the density using this formula:
M Whereas: M = mass (g)
D = ---------- V = volume (mL)
V D = density (g/mL)
7. Get the Average Density for the candle.
B. Repeat procedure A from 2-7 using iron nails of different sizes instead candles. Use 10-mL
cylinder for this. The length of the nails must not more than 7 cm.
OBSERVATION/ANALYSIS:
A. Fill up the Table 1 below:
