What is a book?
Johannes Gutenberg
invented the printing
press with moveable
letters around 1450.
This was a revolution
in the way books were
printed and distributed:
mass production of
books and quick
dissemination to
society was possible
for the first time EVER.

Where do we stand
today?
• Marcus Dohle, CEO of the biggest trade publisher worldwide, Penguin Random House, in 2017:
There has never been a better time for ptinted books than today.
• In the Western markets, statistics show that we see a steady decline in book purchases. Germany: 6
m. book buyers disappeared from 2012-2016.
• With digitization having conquered almost every aspect of our daily lives, our choice of
entertainment has changed dramatically: Youtube, Netflic, Iflix & co., games, music, audio books,
content to be consumed on platforms, streaming and subscription serices: they all compete for our
time (and money).
FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE 23
The Publishers
• Mobile is Eating the World (Ben Evans, Silicon Valley analyst, 2014
• But competition is fierce, and content is produced by non-publishers as well (Book to Film? Netflix?)
• The digital revolution is challenging the business: publishers have to invest in multichanneling – either
by licensing content to other firms or by doing it themselves.
• Challenges: must maintain the stability of the „old“ business (which is stil the stronges) and innovate
and explore at the same time. Must keep focus on revenues from printed books while extending
digital protfolios with ebooks/digital autio downloads, subscription and streaming.
• It is becoming more and more important to reach the end consumer (while most books are still
distributed through traditional channels (book stores).

Authors
• Many more possibilities! (more agents, more publishers, more platforms. Self publishing made easy!
• Wattpad! Indonesia is now the 2nd biggest reading and writing community of Wattpad worldwide, with
8,7 m users.
• Starting out as a self publisher can be useful! And some have become famous that way, having been
picked up by big publishers.
• Streamng and subscription are rather cheap for the consumer, which means less income for authors.

Readers – Consumer’s Heaven?
• Readers are empowered and have a much bigger say in the market (fan fiction,
behaviour is captured and analyzed)
FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE 29
New opportunities – come at a
cost
• For publishers: challenges as mentioned, more staff, more efforts for the same (or less)
outcome (turnover).
• For authors: the roles are changing, which way to go? Who can be trusted?
• For readers: The big choice. Where to spend the precious time? We need highly aware
and grown up readers
• For educators: How to keep on top of all these different channels? How to get trained to
use them in the right way?
• For the Book in education: Reprots show that kids learn better and faster and more
sustainalbe with printed materials: will the brain change and adjust?

The Future of Content? Content is fluid
• PwC Study calls the Book an „evergreen“ that will always stay with
us, at least in Europe.

The Role of publishers and libraries
• of the
Publishers: future
copyright legislation tends towards „deomcratisation of knowldege“ and
open access models in many parts of the world, which means the need to explore more
new avenues.
• At the same time: traditional publishers stand for quality. That might be of high
relevance in the future.
