Monarch Legacy Scholarship Application Class of 2020

____________________________________________________________________________
Section 1: Opening Letter

Dear Monarch Graduating Senior,

Enclosed is the 2019-2020 Monarch Scholarship application. The Monarch Scholarship is

meant to encourage graduates to achieve their education goals of earning a college degree or
technical certification. The Monarch Scholarship awards students whose academic excellence,
personal ambition and achievements merit recognition. Scholarship recipients are chosen for
their motivation to achieve a higher education, their academic potential and their passion for
giving back to their community.

Students must demonstrate a high level of personal commitment to continuing their education
beyond Monarch by pursuing a variety of other means of financial support, including financial
aid, external scholarships and employment. The Monarch Scholarship is available to
supplement these other income sources. Scholarship types and funding amounts will vary
based on the strength of the application and the availability of funds.

It is important that you spend a significant amount of time before and during your senior year
brainstorming and evaluating realistic options for furthering your education. To support you
through that planning process, all candidates for graduation must complete the Monarch Senior
Portfolio as a prerequisite for graduation and to be eligible to receive the Monarch Scholarship
and other forms of support.

The Monarch Scholarship Spring application deadline is Friday, June 1 at 4:00 p.m. Award
decisions will be made and announced by June 8, 2020.

Monarch Scholarship awards are not automatic or guaranteed. All scholarship candidates must
meet certain eligibility criteria, as well as complete and submit the Monarch Scholarship
Application included in this packet prior to the deadline. Late or incomplete submissions will not
be accepted. Scholarship funds will not be distributed to students who have not applied and
been formally awarded scholarship funds.

Always Believing In You,

Megan Turner

Section 8: Personal Statement

Please write a 1-2 page, double-spaced essay that addresses the following:

High School has prepared me for many challenges ahead. I have learned how to cope

with stress and problem-solving skills. One of my challenges will be moving to a new location

being away from family. This will be the first time in my life where I won't have my family's

assistance. There is a lot of stress when moving to a new place especially when you don’t have

anyone to lean on and a support group. Fortunately, at Monarch, I have learned how to cope

with stress and how to effectively use it for something positive. Also moving to a new place can

be a positive and rewarding experience. I will meet new people and gain a sense of

independence. I will be able to make my own decisions without having to worry about my little
sisters and about getting home at a certain time. I will still be responsible of course but I will

have a sense of freedom. I will also have to start working part-time to pay for something I won’t

be able to cover with student loans and savings. Time management has been a challenge I

have been struggling with throughout high school and it is going to be a challenge I will continue

to struggle with. But I am using my resources like calendars, and binders to help me.

The next 5 years of my life will be filled with joy, sorrow, accomplishments, and failures. There is

no way to know how my life is going to be like in the next chapter of my life. But I know I will

have a great time making new experiences and friends along the way. I also know I will have a

rouge time tackling the challenges ahead. My sister passed away last year and I know her

passing is something I will be learning to cope with my whole life. I will also discover what my

purpose is and how I will change my community. In the next 5 years, I will earn my bachelor's

degree with hard work and dedication. I might join a non-profit that is committed to helping the

ocean and our environment or find a job at an aquarium or wildlife center and rescue/take care

of marine mammals. Maybe become a certified scuba diver and teach others or learn how to

surf.

At Monarch, I have had many support systems. If I ever needed to talk there was always

someone I could turn to support. When I needed academic help I always had someone I could

ask. After Monarch, I am going to have a much different support system. I know I will still be

able to ask for help, I will have student services to ask for tutors and counselors to work with

me. I will also get accommodations like extra time on assignments due to my IEP. If I am not

sure where to go for help I can ask Ms.Megan because I will be in the alumni program.
Ms.Megan and Ms.Delia will be a great help in life after high school. I know I can go to them for

any support I’ll need and they will support me the best they can.

My Monarch community has helped me grow academically and emotionally. In the future, I hope

I will get a chance to give back to that community. Maybe in the future, I can tutor other students

who need help or help out in the teacher's classes. Or I can help out with setting up for Monarch

events. Maybe in the future, after students graduate from college they can be mentors to help

and grow future seniors. Similar to the mentorship they have right now with Ms.Deila but with

Monarch students that have graduated college and have been in similar situations growing up.

In my community outside of the monarch, I would like to help save lives but not human lives. I

would like to be a rescuer for endangered animals being hunted or animals rescued on the

beach and be able to teach my community about these animals. The importance of saving our

ecosystem and our planet because as humans we take things for granted: internet, electricity,

electronics, etc. We use these resources and we call them “necessities” but they are not

necessities because we can survive without them. I believe educating people will make a

difference in our community and possibly the world.
