= f1(t) U(t) + [ f2(t) - f1(t)] U(t – a) + [f3(t) - f2(t) ]U(t – b)

Express the following piecewise continuous function in terms of the unit step
function

Solution

a) f(t) = 2t2 [U(t – 0) – U(t – 3)] + (t + 4) [U(t – 3) – U( t – 5)] + 9 U(t – 5)


= 2t2 U(t) + [t + 4 – 2t2] U(t – 3) + [9 – (t + 4)] U(t – 5)
= 2t2 U(t) + (t + 4 – 2t2) U(t – 3) + (5 – t) U(t – 5)

b) g(t) = 0 U(t – 1) + [ U(t – 1) – U(t – 3)] + 3[U(t – 3) – U(t – 5)] + 2[U(t – 5)


– U(t – 6)] + 0 U(t – 6)
= U(t – 1) + 2 U(t – 3) – U(t – 5) – 2 U(t – 6)
