Lesson Idea Name: Word Problems

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 2nd- 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within
10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Technology Standard Addressed: Performance Expectation

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s)
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, students will solve the word problem that is written on the board. This problem
will prepare them for what they will see on the Kahoot! Students will write their final answer on a white
board and hold it up. Then the teacher will go over the problem. Students will then be instructed to get a
tablet or computer and return to their seats to start the Kahoot!

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the SRT activity students will be
participating in the activity. If they answer the question before the time has expired that are to
quietly wait until the next question appears. The teacher will be in the front of the class reading the
questions to the students and navigating through the questions. The materials that are needed for
this activity are student laptops/computers and a scratch piece of paper for them to show their
work. This lesson will last 15 minutes. About 5 minutes for instruction and 10 minutes for the
activity.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. Jenn goes to the store. She needs 12 bags of chips. The store only has 7. How many
more does she need?
2. Corey has 5 dogs, 3 frogs, 2 fish, and 6 cats. How many animals does he have all
together?
3. Ms. Rogers has 24 students in her class. 6 students get the flu and are absent. How many
students are in class?
4. You are sick. You need to take 5mg or medicine. There is 15mg of medicine total. How
much is left after you take it?
5. Cassidy has 7 lollipops. She gives 2 to Sam and 4 to Sarah. How many lollipops does
Cassidy have left?
6. Jenny gives Henry 6 pencils. Henry already has 12 pencils. How many does he have
now?
7. Camden has 24 pieces of candy. Cassidy steals 16 pieces. How many does Camden
have left?
8. If Tommy has 15 toys and Timmy has 10 toys, how many toys do they have all together?

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The correct answers will be displayed and explained so that each student knows exactly why they missed the
problem and how they can correct themselves.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After this SRT, students will independently review
the questions they got wrong. They will spend about 10 minutes doing this. After the 1ime is up, we will then
go into a class discussion and review each question and how to solve it. After everyone is done asking
questions, I will pass out a word problem test in order to see what they have learned.
How will the data be used? The data collected from this activity will be used to show what each student has
learned from previous activities on word problems. The data will be used for the teacher to understand which
areas of the information taught, need to be focused more on. After each round in Kahoot, the system
analyzes who the fasted and most accurate player is. This person is then highlighted on the screen which
motivates the students to get to that spot. At the end of the SRT, the top players will be rewarded and

recognized. Students will be able to see which questions they got correct and wrong by looking on their
screen. The individuals with the lowest scores will not be shown which maintaining their confidentiality.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. My goal for this activity is to facilitate my student’s
mastery of word problems. I want students to become confident in their ability to solve these problems.

Reflective Practice: The activity I created could impact student learning by motivating them to participate and
think. To further extend this activity, I could have each student create a word problem quiz using Kahoot!
Each day, we could go through some of the students created questions.
