Back in the 1950s and 1960s, the big sound in music was a blend of warm voices and steady
rhythms. In time, Californian beach sound drifted away and soon it became popular throughout the
world. Groups like the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean created an easy summer feeling completed
with the roar of the surf. The carefree and sentimental lyrics and the pleasant harmony were the
background of the happy mood that covered the world of music in that period. Little by little, the
rhythm changed and Elvis Presley was the one that combined soul with rock.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What is the text about?
2. How is the music of the 1950s and 1960s characterized?
3. Who was Elvis Presley?
4. What kind of music do you like?

A few years ago it was fashionable to speak of a generation gap, a division between young
people and their elders. Parents complained that children did not show them respect and obedience,
while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong?
One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their
own life-style. In more traditional societies, where children grow up, they are expected to live in the
same area and in the same style with their parents. But now the old and the young seem to live in
two different worlds.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What is the text about?
2. What did parents complain about?
3. What was the cause of this?
4. Do you agree with the last sentence in the text?

In the past few years a lot of small shops have been forced to close down because of the
changes in public shopping habits and the increasing popularity of supermarkets.
We cannot deny that supermarkets have certain advantages. Firstly, they offer a wide variety
of goods at low prices. Furthermore, they create jobs for a great number of people thus helping to
reduce unemployment. In addition to this they are ideal for those shoppers who do not have time to
visit more than one shop in order to do their weekly shopping.
On the other hand, small local shops offer certain benefits that supermarkets will never be
able to do. Small shops are ideal for emergency shopping, generally stay open later than
supermarkets and offer friendly service.
In conclusion, it is time we really started to make an effort to save our small shops before it is
too late.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What does the text contrast?
2. What are the advantages of supermarkets?
3. What are the advantages of small shops?

In today's last moving world, people have less and less time to spend eating and cooking. This
is probably why junk food has become so popular.
But junk food is not the best thing for your health because it is high saturated fat, which has
been associated with a greater risk of cancer. The best advice then for those who cannot live without
their hamburger and chocolate bars is to limit the amount of junk food they eat.
Another alarming thing about people's lifestyles today is that while the amount of junk food
has increased, the amount of exercise we do has actually decreased.
Even though people nowadays are more aware of the importance of exercise and a healthy
diet than they were a few years ago, the new unhealthy way of life is surprisingly popular.
Researchers show that the new generation will suffer from heart and liver diseases.

Answer the following questions after reading the text :

1. What is the text about?
2. What is junk food?
3. What does the author find surprising?
4. Do you often eat junk food?

It took a few days to build. It also gave Alan unlicensed access to my garden. At the weekend
my father found us lengths of wood he hammered together to make a platform, with four more
planks for a balustrade on each side. (Banging away, he told us there was a tradition of having
bedrooms upstairs in houses because our ancestors, the cavemen, used to make their sleeping places
in trees to be safe from predators. 'Animals ?' I asked him. 'Yes. Or humans', he said. Claire
contributed some lopped branches from a pine tree in the vicarage garden: they still had their
needles attached, and Alan without discussing it arranged them to make a chalet-style roof to give
us shade. My father knotted some chandler's cable-rope to one of the other branches. Then it was
more or less complete and ready.

Diana stood at the barrier and watched the train disappearing from view. Disconsolately she
turned away. She had missed it by seconds and she hated being late at the office. Then she thought
of the letter in her bag. It was from her son, Stephen. She had longed to open it before she left the
house, but there was not time. Now she could read it over and over again in that long wait before
the next train.
Hugging the thought to herself, she went over to the form opposite the barrier. A young girl,
already sitting there, made room for her. Diana had a confused impression of gleaming spectacles
and a moon-shaped, anxious face.

In the Western movie, which comes out of many legends of the American West, a typical
figure is the lonesome cowboy. He wanders into a town and straightens out its troubles. Then the
strong and independent hero rides off in the sunset alone. Americans like this image in their films
because they are highly independent and individualism counts a great deal with them. An
individual, who is able to correct the evils of the world, or of a small town, is someone to admire.
He fights the evil, helps the people in need, and is always, ready to save someone.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

For many years people would rather stay at home and watch television rather than go to the
movies. The new science fiction, war, romance and spy thrillers have brought people back to the
theatres. Once again, on Friday and Saturday nights audiences stand in long lines, buying tickets,
and laughing and crying over new creations. The habit of going to theatres is making a big coming
back today. The theatre fascinates the audience because people can see the actors in flesh and blood
and live "the life" of the characters. You cannot forget the atmosphere of the theatre hall, the curtain
rising and the applause at the end of the performance.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What does the text speak about?

3. On which days are theatres full?

Children of all ages need to feel accepted by their age groups. It is not uncommon for people
to act in special way in order to make a group accept and like them. For example, if the "group"
wears baggy trousers and leather jackets, youngsters who want to be "in" will dress in those styles.
Or if a rude behaviour is the style of one group, a child who wants to belong to the group may speak
rudely. It is strange how young people react to their generation pressure. The need to belong may
have both positive and negative effects. Do you agree?

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What does the text talk about?
2. What do children of all ages need?
3. What are the effects of belonging to a group?

Christmas is the season of goodwill - but often it seems that business has lost sight of this in
its pursuit of profit. Nowadays, many merely look at Christmas as an opportunity to make more
money. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but those who got too far may appear selfish, miserable
and dull.
As Christmas becomes more and more commercialized, it cannot, surely, be long before
consumer affairs programmes expose companies for being especially greedy at Christmas and
ruining the Christmas spirit. It is, after all, absurd that, on the other hand, they want everyone to be
generous and give expensive presents, and yet, on the other hand, they themselves forget to be
charitable.

As a result of the modernization of agriculture, the farm of today looks a lot like a factory.
Not everyone is happy with the changes that have taken place on the farm. Some people say that the
eggs that come from farm-factory chickens lack the flavour of the old-fashioned kind. Fruits and
vegetables are no longer grown for flavour but for their ability to stand mechanical harvesting. The
choice between old-fashioned flavour and modern abundance is not an easy one to make. Many
people would rather keep to the old fashion, while others prefer the new ways.

Teenagers do not spend as much money as their parents suspect- at least not according to the
findings on a recent survey. The survey included three hundred teenagers, 13-17 years old, from all
over Britain. Worry about debt is increasing among teenagers. Therefore the majority of children
make an effort to save for the future. Greater access to cash among teenagers does not mean that
they are irresponsible as a result. The economic recession seems to have encouraged cautious
attitudes to money even in the case of children at these ages. Instead of wasting what pocket money
they have on sweets or magazines, the teenagers who took part in the survey seem to respond to the
situation by saving more than half of their cash.

The Chinese New Year festivities are held at the end of January or the beginning of February
for a period of one month. During this time, Chinese people celebrate the end of the winter season.
Preparations begin in December when shops are crowded with people buying gifts. Buying
new shoes is extremely important because it is believed that if you walk in old shoes on New Year's
day you will have bad luck.
Gifts are offered at midnight. Children traditionally receive coins in red envelopes. For the
next two weeks, all shops are closed as people enjoy visiting friends and relatives.
The final and most impressive event is the Lantern Festival. Colourful lanterns are hung
outside home and a dragon parade takes place. The dragon is very long, made of paper and painted
in bright colours. The parade winds through the streets as crowds cheer and set off firecrackers.

The Scots celebrate Hogmany on the night of December 31st. It is a time for people to
welcome the coming of the New Year. Preparations for Hogmany begin at the end of November
when Christmas trees are decorated with colourful ornaments and lights. On New Year's people
dress smartly and gather in town squares and wait till midnight. At midnight, the clock strikes
twelve and people cheer, shout and sing. They kiss one another and drink a glass of Scotch whisky.
Then people go to visit their friends to wish them a Happy New Year. It is believed that it is good
luck if the first foot to enter someone's house in the New Year belongs to a tall, dark, handsome
man. Visitors carry a piece of coal with them as a good luck present. Hogmany is a great time for

Leaving behind friends and family, many young people leave their hometown to search for
work in the big city. But the dream of a new life often turns out to be a nightmare. Jobs are difficult
to fin and friends are scarce when your luck runs out. Thousands of teenagers end up living in cheap
hostels or illegal squats1. These squats are empty houses which are either privately-owned or
council-owned. The windows are often boarded up and the electricity is usually cut off. People
sleep on mattresses on the floor and rely on candles. The work is often physically tiring and may
even be dangerous. In addition to the problems of employment and accommodation, many young
people experience loneliness in the anonymity of the city. 1 empty buildings in which people live

Last summer we decided to stay at a camping site on an island in the south because all
accommodation became more and more expensive. We would have sunbathing every day, then we
would make some sightseeing and at weekends we would have a travel around the island. One day,
when we made an excursion to a ruined castle, the whether changed all of s sudden and black
clouds appeared from nowhere. After a few moments, a heavy rain started, and it was so dark that
we could hardly see a thing. We looked for a shelter in the ruins. Once our eyes got used to the
darkness, we started exploring the place. It was quite scary but our curiosity was greater than our
fear. Presently we reached a large hall whose ceiling had saved its original beauty. Huge spider

Ever since the first radio station was founded almost 80 years ago, the medium has been
characterised by the local nature of its programming. While only a very few television stations
produce even 20% of their own programming, most radio production has tended to be produced
locally and live. Radio, more than any other mass communication medium, speaks in the language
and with the accent of its community. Its programming reflects local interests and the medium has
made important contributions to both the heritage and the development of the cultures that surround
it. We can identify three tendencies that are affecting the radio’s local nature: globalisation,

We all make snap judgements about strangers. Within seconds after we meet someone, we
take in a host of details and draw rather large conclusions from them. We may decide in an instant
whether it is someone’s nature to be warm and cold, friendly or hostile, anxious or calm, happy or
troubled. Unconsciously we often ask and quickly answer certain questions: Will I enjoy talking to
him/her at the party? Will he/she make an interesting friend? Will he/she make a good boss? We

Suddenly the door opened, and a woman as old as the hills, who supported herself on
crutches, came creeping out. Hansel and Gretel were so terribly frightened that they let fall what
they had in their hands.
The old woman, however, nodded her head, and said: “Oh, you dear children, who has
brought you here? Do you come in, and stay with me! No harm shall happen to you.”
She took them both by the hand, and led them into her little house. Then good food was set
before them, milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts. Afterwards two pretty little beds were
covered before them with clean white linen, and Hansel and Gretel lay down in them, and thought

There was so much mess on the floor she could only poke her head around the door. Abby sat in the
middle of it all reading a book.

“Why?” Mum repeated. “Because things get broken or lost when they’re all willy-nilly like
this. Come on, have a tidy up now.”
“But I’m very busy,” Abby argued, “and it’s boring on my own. Can’t you help me?”
“No I can’t, I’m busy too. But I’ll give you extra pocket money if you do a good job.”
When Mum came back later all the toys and clothes and books had disappeared.

English is commonly used as a medium for the communication of information and news.
According to statistics, three quarters of all telex messages and telegrams are sent in English. Eighty
percent of computer data are processed and stored in English. Much satellite communication is
carried in English. Five thousand newspapers, more than half of the newspapers published in the
world, are published in English. In many countries, television news is broadcast in English. Because
of the power of television, demonstrators in every country use signs printed in English for the
benefit of the international press.
Popular culture has also played an important part in spreading English. American and
British popular music are heard all over the world. American movies are seen in almost every
country. Books in English are available even in countries where few people actually use English.
One reason that students give for learning English is to understand these songs, movies and books.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What is the text about?

The jumper I had been given for my birthday was too small for me, and one day while
showing some friends around London, I thought it would be sensible to dash into the large
department store where it had been bought and exchange it for a larger one. I told my friends to wait
in the car and rushed into the store. The girl I spoke to at the counter was extremely helpful but
unfortunately they had no others in my size, so I left with the original gift after putting it and the
receipt for it back in my bag.
I dashed out of the store to rejoin my friends, who were still waiting in the car.
“Excuse me. Stop right there! You‟d better come with us.”
Suddenly, my arms were grabbed viciously by a stern, bearded man and a surprisingly similar
woman. They refused to tell me who they were or what I was accused of. I demanded to know what
I had done wrong, but this was met with silence as they marched me through a side entrance to the
store and to a small room upstairs.

Aaron Spelling is said to be the richest and most successful television producer in Hollywood
and, in a city famous for its wealth, his wife, Candy, is the biggest spender. They recently paid more
than $10 million for the huge house Bing Crosby used to live in. Then they had it torn down so that
an even bigger, more wonderful mansion could be built. This will have a more luxurious
swimming-pool, an indoor ice-skating rink and a private zoo, as well. The final bill will come to at
least $25 million. They say that a few years ago, on a typically warm Californian Christmas Eve,

The king penguin is the second largest penguin. It is sometimes confused with the larger
Emperor penguin. The king penguin lives on islands far to the north of the
Antarctic continent where the Emperor penguin lives. Adults are 90 cm tall and weigh about
15-16 kg. They are found on many sub-Antarctic islands including Prince Edward, South Georgia.
The parents take turns bringing food to the chick every other day. The chicks grow quickly during
the warm summer weather. When winter comes the parents go back to sea to feed. In the spring the
parents come back and start feeding the chick again. At this time, the chicks start to grow their adult
feathers and are ready to go off on their own. Raising a King penguin chick usually takes 10 to 13
months. This allows the adults to raise only 1 chick every other year.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more
than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say, `I wish I
could help you but I‟m short of money myself.` In fact, you are not short of money but your friend
is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don`t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of
this. Is this really a lie?
According to a specialist, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white
lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really
thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches say that men are
more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of
fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled
at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. Is the friend really short of money?
2. What is a `white lie`?
3. When do you lie?

Finally the day arrives and we get to the airport in plenty of time. Once at the airport, we
check in. We find the right desk, get rid of the bags and go through to the departure lounge.
Somewhere around here I can finally think about relaxing. Everything is somebody else‟s problem.
If there‟s something wrong with the plane, the pilot can worry about it. And so begin two weeks of
relaxation. For those two weeks, whenever I hear the word I look around as if it refers to someone
else. I ignore any question that begins with “Where‟s my…”. The funny thing is that they always
find it anyway. The only thing I worry about is which book I‟m going to take to the pool. He
follows a ball around a course, they do whatever kids do these days and I become myself again for a
short while.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. Who is the character in the text?
2. Why is the character different from some other people around?
3. What do you feel frustrated about?
4. What are your favourite ways of relaxing?

Take a dog for a stroll and you'll discover it involves a lot more than walking. Dogs
experience the world in a million different ways. They track a scent with their nose. Follow the
flight of a bird with their eyes. Lift their legs to mark territory. Use their paws to dig into the earth.
Roll their fur around in tall grass. Dogs are some of the most experiential creatures on earth, and
humans can learn a lot from them. We tend to be jaded by the world around us, but if we see the
world as a dog does, we can be reborn. Next time you step outside, try to capture the world with all
of your senses. Sniff the air. Feel the ground under your feet. Savor the texture of the air on your
cheeks. By exploring each day like a dog, you can see the world in a thousand new ways every
single day.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What is the text about?
2. What advice does the author give us?
3. What do dogs do when they go for a stroll?
4. Do you consider this good advice?

We didn‟t always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor,
and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler there was Paulina, and before that I can‟t
remember. But what I remember most is moving a lot. Each time it seemed there‟d be one more of
us. By the time we got to Mango Street we were six – Mama, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nenny
and me.
The house on Mango Street is ours, and we don‟t have to pay rent to anybody, or share the
yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn‟t a
landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom. But even so, it‟s not the house we thought we‟d get.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. How many places has the writer of this text lived in?
2. Why did the family have to move so often?
3. Which are the positive features of the house on Mango Street?
4. Do you enjoy the place you live in? What changes would you like to make?

„A few years ago‟, says Charles, „I was a millionaire, but I knew there were a lot of hungry
people in the world.‟ So he gave away all his money to charities. When he had two thousand dollars
left, he gave away small bank notes in the streets of local poor areas. Did he feel like Father
Christmas? „It was a lot of fun‟, says Charles.
Charles believes that many people want to earn a lot of money so that they will not have any
worries. However, most people never make much money. Charles Gray decided to drop out and has
discovered that having only a little money makes you free. Are there any things he misses? „No,
I‟m much happier now. I wouldn‟t go back to being rich for anything – no way.‟

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. Why is Charles Gray no longer a millionaire?
2. How did he feel to give away his last money?
3. In what way has his life improved?
4. Why do people, generally speaking, want to have money?

I suppose I first got fascinated by judo just before I left school when I was around 15. I did
quite a lot of judo until I was about 18, but then there was a gap of about 17years. I took it up again
and now the club plays a special part in my life.
Normally I go to classes three times a week and it’s wonderful to mix with people who don’t
have anything to do with writing or publishing. You may have been writing hard all day and feel
exhausted, but after you’ve been on the mat for a few minutes, you really can’t think about
anything. People don’t talk to you there about their work. And there isn’t any social aspect to it,
which I find very attractive.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. Is the person who wrote the above a sportsman?
2. What do you think his profession might be?
3. Which are the 3 reasons mentioned in the paragraph for which the person practices judo?
4. Is practicing sports a popular way of spending free time for teenagers?

On Christmas Eve, the whole family helped to decorate the house, put up the Christmas tree
and the decorations and blow up the balloons. Then, in the afternoon, when Auntie Kathleen and
my two cousins arrived, everything was ready. Before we went to bed, we left some brandy and
mince pies for Father Christmas and then put our stockings at the end of our beds. We tried to stay
awake as long as possible to see Father Christmas but the next thing we knew it was morning.
Christmas morning.
At the bottom of the bed was the stocking, now full of all kinds of small presents and sweets,
and at the bottom a chocolate sixpence and a tangerine.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. How did the family prepare the house for Christmas?
2. What did the children do before going to bed on Christmas Eve?
3. Why did the children try to stay awake?
4. Do you do similar things on Christmas Eve?

My childhood wasn’t easy. Both of my parents were in the army and consequently we never
lived anywhere for more than a year or two. It was very difficult for me to settle into the different
schools I went to, so I didn’t try as hard as I should have and I often wasn’t very well behaved.
When I was sixteen, I left school and signed up for a career in the army.
I enjoyed the army training and really thought that I had made the right career choice. But one
day my whole world came crashing down when I fell and badly injured my ankle.

Answer the following questions after reading the text:

1. What does the writer of this text consider his childhood was like? Why?
2. What is the writer’s excuse for not trying hard enough at school?
3. Is the career choice she/he had made the right one?
4. Have you made plans for the future?

Julia was 12 years old. Her best friend Betsy was 13. Summer was almost over. School was
about to start. Julia and Betsy were having lunch at BurgerBoy. Betsy had decided that Julia needed
a boyfriend.
“But why?” asked Julia. “I’m okay without one. What good is a 12-year-old boy anyway? All
they’re interested in is playing baseball or riding their skateboards. Where does a girl fit into that
picture?”
“Don’t be silly,” replied Betsy. “And forget about 12-year-olds. They’re immature. You
should go for someone more experienced—someone at least 13 years old. Someone who will carry
your books and walk you to your classes. You need someone who’ll give you a Valentine’s Day
card and remember your birthday. You need someone to comfort you when you’re sad and lonely.
You need someone to protect you.”
“But my dad does that! That’s what dads are for. He comforts me; he protects me. And he
remembers my birthday, too. I’ve got a backpack to carry my books, and I know where all my
classes are. I don’t need an escort. And a Valentine’s Day card means that someone loves you.

Do ghosts really exist? There are lots of people who say that they do; and I am one of them.
Many of Britain's ancient castles have ghosts. One of the most famous "haunted castles" in
England is actually the Tower of London.
During the Tower's long history, many men and women were thrown into its dark dungeons,
or executed outside its gates! Among the most famous was Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England in
the year 1554. Jane was just 17 when she became Queen, on July 9th 1554; however, at the same
time another woman, Mary, thought that she ought to be Queen. Mary's supporters were stronger
than Jane's, and within days Jane was sent to the Tower of London. On 19th July poor Jane had her
head cut off outside the Tower!
Since then, it is said that the ghost of Lady Jane Grey wanders through the rooms and
corridors of the Tower of London.
