Lesson Idea Name: Weather and Rainfall Maps

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th

Content Standard Addressed: S4E4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather
events and infer weather patterns using weather charts/maps and collected weather data.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms ☐
Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The instructional activity that will occur before this Kahoot game is the teaching of the lesson. I will teach
and review with my students everything that will be on the Kahoot.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During this activity, the students will be answering the multiple choice question on either their computer
or phone. The materials that are needed are their devices, the Kahoot code, and the teacher’s login so they
can give the students the questions. This activity will last between 15-20 minutes depending on how long the
students take on each question and how many questions we go over.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. What was the average snowfall for most of the southern part of Georgia?
2. Which Southern states had a "Much Above Average" for precipitation? 3. True or False:
Georgia had a “Record Warmest” temperature
4. Estimate the temperature of Georgia.
5. What sentence would best describe how this week's weather looks?
6. Which city(ies) have the lowest temperature?
7. On this map, which state had average temperatures that ONLY stayed between 82.4-96.8 degrees?
8. Which cities had an average annual rainfall of 20-40 inches?
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity? ☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
It is best for the students to see the actual correct answer so they know for next time. They may had no
clue of what it could be, so letting students see can help clear any confusion.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, we will give a short summary of the lesson and wrap up by asking the students
questions that were not on the Kahoot!.

How will the data be used?
The data that will be collected as a result of this activity is the number of students who got each answer
correct or incorrect. I will also be seeing which students answered most of or all of the questions incorrectly.
This data will be used by me. I will be able to pinpoint what specifically I need to go over with the whole class.
With knowing which individuals didn’t answer most of the questions correctly, I will be able to see who they
are and pull them into small groups or work with them one-on-one so they can fully understand what I
taught. We will get a chance to have extra practice. Whoever is in the top 5 on the board will receive a piece
of candy. I will discuss the incorrect answers during and after the game. During the game, we will go into
depth on why an answer is correct or incorrect. After the game, we will discuss the answers, but it will be
more like a review.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My learning goal for this activity is for students to be able to apply what they learned. They should have
understood the lesson enough to be able to answer the given questions. I hope this will help the students
learn because if they missed a problem, they will be able to see that they were not alone because others may
have missed the same. I hope that it also helps my shy students because they will stay anonymous if they feel
more comfortable that way. This will also help my students learn because they will be shown questions that
they may see on exams or quizzes in the future. This will prepare them and they will know what to study for. I
hope that my students have fun doing this formative assessment and push themselves to try to be on the
board.

Reflective Practice:
I feel that this activity I created could impact student learning because they will be given a review game on
what was taught. It will push their competitiveness because they will want to be on the board, which means
that they will try harder to get the correct answers. To further extend the lesson, instead of doing a Kahoot
game, I could do a Jeopardy type of game where the students work in teams to get the correct answers. I
could use that as a review game before unit tests.
