Hempaline Defend 740: Hempaline Defend 740 Base : Hempel’s Curing Agent 9580A
Description: Hempaline Defend 740 is a two-component, sprayable high performance novolac glass flake
vinyl ester tank lining. Hempaline Defend 740 has excellent resistance to organic and inorganic
acid solutions, high temperatures and frequently used where higher abrasion resistance is
needed.
Recommended use: Linings for Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD), absorber outlet ducts and steel stacks. Hempaline
Defend 740 will also withstand high temperatures, wet gas and chemical exposures found in wet Flue
Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) systems and other extreme chemical environments. May also be used
as a lining for steel and concrete chemical processing, storage tanks and vessels.
Refer to Hempaline Chemical Resistance guide or Contact your Hempel Representative for
specific chemicals and service conditions.
Physical constants:
Theoretical spreading rate: 1.8 m2/litre at 500 microns [72 ft2/US gallon at 20 mils]
Shelf life: 6 months at 20°C / 68°F from time of production. Shelf life is reduced at storage temperatures
above 20°C / 68°F.

The physical constants stated are nominal data according to the Hempel Group's approved formulas.
Safety: Handle with care. Before and during use, observe all safety labels on packaging and
paint containers, consult Hempel Material Safety Data Sheets and follow all local
or national safety regulations.
Surface preparation: Steel: Remove oil and grease etc. thoroughly with suitable detergent. Remove salts and other
contaminants by high pressure fresh water cleaning. Dry abrasive blasting to Sa 2½
(ISO 8501-1) corresponding to SSPC SP10/NACE No.2 with a dense, angular surface profile of
Rz 75 – 100μm/3 – 4 mils corresponding to ISO Comparator Medium (G), Keane-Tator
Comparator 3.0 to 4.5 G/S or Rugotest No. 3 BN 10a-b. After blasting, clean the surface carefully
from abrasives and dust.
Application conditions: Apply only on a dry and clean surface with a temperature above the dew point to avoid
condensation. 24 hours prior to application store the components (base and curing agent)
at 20°C-25°C / 68°F-77°F to facilitate handling and spraying. Use only where application and
curing can proceed at temperatures above: 10°C / 50°F. Maximum relative humidity: 80%. In
confined spaces provide adequate ventilation during application and drying.
Preceding coat: For Steel: NONE, Hempaline Prepare 120 or Hempaline Prepare 160
For Concrete: Hempaline Prepare 120
Remarks:
Volume solids: Theoretically, the product contains 100% volume solid. Depending on the application and curing
conditions some of the volatile reactants may evaporate. Furthermore, the curing process is
accompanied by a contraction.
These two factors result in a “theoretical” volume solids of 90% and a spreading rate of 1.8 m2/l
[72 ft2/ US gallon] at 500 micron (20 mils).
Film thicknesses/thinning: May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of
use. This will alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and overcoating interval.
Normal dry film thickness range is 400-1000 micron/16-40 mils.
