Daily Lesson Log Teacher Ma. Belinda L. Calabucal Learning Area Science

Teaching Date and Time January 15, 2020 Quarter Third

DAY: WEDNESDAY

I. OBJECTIVES

The learners demonstrate an understanding of mutations that

A. Content Standards
occur in sex cells as being heritable.
B. Performance Standards

C. I. A. LEARNING ENDSTATES (What skills & competencies, values

and attitudes (7 mastery skills) are being developed?)
1.LEARNING TO THINK: Understands concepts of how genetic
mutation is passed from parents to offspring that can result to
variation. (S10LT-IIIe-38)
2.LEARNING TO DO: Applies scientific method in investigating the
concepts of mutation.
3.LEARNING TO FEEL: Upholds responsibility for one’s health and
protection and conservation of biodiversity.
4.LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE: Expresses the importance of
managing a healthy body in achieving homeostasis and stable
Learning Competencies / Objectives ecosystem .
Write the LC code for each 5.LEARNING TO INTUIT: Reflects how positive and negative

emotions affect health, life and environment.
6. LEARNING TO LEAD: Promotes healthy environment, mind and
body
7.LEARNING TO BE: Healthy Communitarian

B. HOW WILL THE LEARNING PROMOTE:

1.ETHICAL FORMATION: Observes practices to attain physical,
mental stability and balance .
2.SOCIAL RESPONSIVENESS: Promotes public health and
environmental awareness .

II. CONTENT MUTATION

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References

  1. Teacher's Guide Pages TG pp.166-169

  2. Learner's Materials Pages LM pp.284-285

  3. Textbook Pages

  4.
Additional Materials from Learning
Resource (LR) portal

B. Other Learning Resource  Pictures, box, videoclips, powerpoint presentation, worksheet

IV. PROCEDURES

Activity 1: What’s inside

the box? Inside the box are pictures of super heroes. Ask
volunteer students to draw picture from the box and let
them identify the super heroes and explain how they got
their super power.

Ask the following questions.

1.Who can tell me how Cyclops from the X-Men got his
superpowers? (Answer: He’s a mutant and was born with his
superpowers.)

2.What about the Hulk? (Answer: Mutation due to exposure

to gamma radiation.)

3.What about Spiderman? (Answer: Mutated when bitten

by a radioactive spider.)
  A. ACTIVATE (Creating and Purpose) Activity 2: Brainstorming Show pictures of a normal tiger
and mutated tiger.

1.What might cause mutation to occur?

2.Explain how this mutation caused this tiger to have a white

coat instead of an orange coat.

Activity 3: ICT Integration /Videoclips viewing

Let them Watch the Bozeman Science Video on Mutations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fd6GLZuSeM.

Through this activity, students will be able to make models of

the different mutations such as translocation, deletion and
inversion.

Guide Questions:
B. ACQUIRE
1. How are the three chromosomal aberrations different from
each other? How are they similar?
2. Do you think the normal genetic content of the chromosome
is affected?
3. Which condition results to gain of chromosome material? Loss
of chromosome material?
4. What are some possible effects of these chromosomal
mutations?

C. APPLY, PRACTICE, FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT Activity 5: Discussion through powerpoint presentation The
teacher shows a normal male and female karyotype to the
class .Let the students compare the normal karyotype to some
examples of karyotypes of chromosomal abnormalities which
may result to human genetic disorders such as Down’s
syndrome, Edwards’s syndrome, Klinefelter’s syndrome and
Turners syndrome. Mention also that not all mutations are
harmful. Cite several examples of crops and animals that are
genetically engineered or modified to produce desirable traits.
D.
SUMMATIVE Activity 6 : Worksheet on Mutation ( WHAT’S WRONG WITH
ASSESSMENT ME?)
, CLOSURE Let the students answer the following worksheet. Instruction:
AND There are several types of gene mutations, those that only
REFLECTION involve one gene and therefore only one polypeptide.

SUBSTITUTION (one base is substituted for another) If a

mutation changes the amino acid, it’s called a MISSENSE
mutation. If a mutation does not change the amino acid, it’s
called a SILENT mutation. If a mutation changes the amino
acid to a “stop,” it’s called a NONSENSE mutation. DELETION
(a base is lost) INSERTION (an extra base is inserted)
Deletion and insertion usually cause what’s called a
FRAMESHIFT, meaning the reading “frame” changes, changing
the amino acid sequence.). I.
