THE COURSE COODINATOR—MEX 3212

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
THE OPENUNIVERSITY OF SRI LANKA
P.O. BOX 21, NAWALA, NUGEGODA.

5. Last date of submission. 25th August 2017. Strictly no late submissions will be
accepted due to any reason.

Q1).

a). Describe the working principles of following types of roto - dynamic machines with
examples.
1. Axial Flow
2. Radial Flow
3. Mixed Flow
b). Describe the following terms.
Impeller, Propeller, Aerofoil, Water hammer effect, Peloton wheel, suction head and
discharged head.

Q2).

a). What are the main components of a steam power plant ? Explain, how it works.
b). What is the difference between the Carnot cycle and the Rankin cycle.
c). Compare and contrast the differences between vapour compression and vapour
absorption systems.

Q3).
As shown in Figure 3a, a plane surface area of A is totally immersed in a liquid of
density ρ. If this surface is inclined at an angle θ to the horizontal and its centroid is at
a vertical depth yc below the free surface.

FR

(a). Derive an expression for the resultant force FR on one side of the surface.

(b). Show that the distance to the center of pressure from the free surface is given by the
expression,

∫ y dA

ycp =
∫ ydA
(c). Show that, the distance to the center of pressure of the triangular surface, shown in
Figure 3b is given by,

ycp =

Q4).

a). What is meant by potential head, pressure head, velocity head and total head for a
liquid in motion ?
b). State the Bernoulli's theorem and the assumptions that you made to apply it for a fluid
flow.
c). Figure 4c shows a jet of water from a nozzle of 20mm in diameter, is directed vertically
upwards. Assuming that the jet remain circular and neglecting any loss of energy, what will
be the diameter (d2) of the jet at a point of 5m above the nozzle if the velocity with which the
water leaves the nozzle is 50ms-1 .

d). Develop an expression for the force exerted by a jet of liquid which strikes a stationary
flat plate normally.

e). A square plate of uniform thickness and length of side 30cm hangs vertically from hinges at its top
edge as shown in the Figure 4e. When a horizontal jet strikes the plate at its center, the plate is
deflected and comes to rest at an angle of 300 to the vertical. The jet of water is 20mm in diameter
and has velocity of 10ms-1 . Calculate the mass of the plate and give the distance along the plate,
form the hinge, of the point at which the jet strikes the plate in its deflection position.
