1.04 SUBMITTALS AND RECORDS TO BE RETAINED

A Records to be Retained:
1. Methods Statements
2. Shop Drawings: Shop Drawings which show plans and section: construction ma-
terial; finishes; methods of fastening, supporting, and assembling: locations of
cuts, copes, connections, holes, and thread fasteners; type, size, and spacing of
welds; and proposed marking of fabrications which will require field assembly.
3. Samples: Retain two samples each of all metal fabrications indicating construc-
tion profiles and finish. Samples shall be approximately 300 mm x 300 mm in
size, or smaller for fabricated small items such as fasteners.
4. Manufacturer’s instructions: Catalog cut of off-the-shelf products including set-
ting diagrams and manufacturer’s printed installation instructions.
5. Certificates: Welders’ and tackers’ qualifications; showing date of qualification,
qualification grade and rating, and signature of inspector.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Welding procedures and welding operations shall be at least as specified, and welders
and tackers shall be qualified at least as specified in AWS D1.1.

B. Welders employed on the Works are to have AWS qualifications or equivalent, veri-
fied within the previous 12 months.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Material specifications shall be at least as specified below.

B. Structural Steel Plates, Shapes, Tubing and Bars: Carbon steel and stainless steel shall
be at least as specified in ASTM A36M, A176, A269 and A276, and A666 unless oth-
erwise indicated. The type of stainless steel shall be Type 316 unless otherwise speci-
fied.

C. Structural Steel Sheets and Strips: Carbon steel shall be at least as specified in ASTM
A570M, Grade 36.

D. Floor Plates and Frames: Carbon steel and stainless steel shall be at least as specified
in ASTM A283M Grade A, A167 Type 316 and A276 Type 316, and not thinner than
6 mm, excluding depth of raised pattern, Surfaces which will be exposed to traffic
shall have either an epoxy abrasive finish or raised diamond and checkered patterns.

E. Cast Iron Castings: Shall be true to pattern in form and dimensions, and free form cast-
ing faults, sponginess, cracks, blowholes, and other defects which would affect
strength and appearance; boldly filleted at angles; arrises shall be sharp and precise,
and either steel-brushed or sandblasted in a manner and to a degree which will remove
scale and sand, and which will result in a clean and uniform surface. Coat castings
with asphalt paint.

F. Fasteners: Same color and finish as that of metal to which applied.

1. Bolts and Nuts: Carbon steel or stainless steel. Carbon steel shall be at least as
specified in ASTM A307 grade A or B and hot-dip galvanized at least as specified
in ASTM A153. Stainless steel shall be at least as specified in ASTM A276 Type
316.
2. Washers: Round, galvanized carbon for carbon steel bolts and stainless steel for
stainless steel bolts; shall be at least as specified in ASME B18.22.1.
3. Expansion Bolts and Screws: Shall have metal shields except that screws for inte-
rior work shall have either metal shields or fiber plugs. Steel drive bolts of same
size as expansion botls and having split shank and closed ends and threaded on
one end shall be used instead of expansion bolts in concrete.
4. Drive Bolts: Shall be threaded on one end, carbon steel, and have split shank and
closed ends.
5. Bar Anchors: Shall have turned ends and, where practicable, shall be extending
not less than 300 mm into masonry and 100 mm into concrete.
6. Fasteners which will be in dry spaces shall be power-driven type

G. Backing Plates for Products Requiring Backing Plate Support: Not lighter than 16-
gauge structural steel or stainless steel sheet. Backing plates, which are installed in
stud walls, shall be of a length, which shall span not fewer than three installed studs.
Shop-prime plates.

H. Gratings: Stainless steel unless other materials are indicated. Bearing bars shall be not
thinner than 3 mm. Grating supports shall be of structural steel shapes, and fastened to
structure with stainless steel anchors. Unless otherwise indicated, gratings shall be re-
movable, but shall have locking lugs and means of bolting in-place. Gratings which
will bear mortar traffic shall be designed for AASHTO wheel loads and have top
edges serrated. Walkway and light well gratings shall be manufactured by the swaged-
pressure method. Gratings which will only bear pedestrian traffic shall be designed for
500 kg/m2 live load with maximum clear spacing between bearing bars not to exceed 6
mm.

I. Corner Guards, Curb Angles, and Bumpers: Shall have concealed anchors made of
galvanized steel or stainless steel as shown on the Construction Drawings.

J. Trench and Pit Cover: 6-mm thick abrasive steel or stainless steels plate as shown on
the Construction Drawings. Cut continuous covers in convenient lengths for handling;
each cover shall have finger holes.

K. Aerial Structure Walkways, Conduit Racks, and Wireways: Bar gratings to be manu-
factured from stainless steel or galvanized steel as shown on the Construction Draw-
ings shall be at least as specified in the requirements of paragraph G, Gratings or inter-
locking panels; a mixture of gratings and panels shall not be used. Galvanize assem-
blies after fabrication.

L. Safety Railing:
1. Carbon steel tube or aluminum pipe or aluminum tube or stainless steel as indi-
cated on the Construction Drawings.
a. Carbon or Stainless Steel Assembly:
1) Tube: ASTM A500 or ASTM A269
2) Fittings: ASTM A36Am, A276, pressure fit.
3) Shims: Steel, wedge-shaped.

less steel, type 316 for stainless steel assembly.
7) Galvanized repair paint: MIL-P-21035.
8) Chain at one end of removable sections: 3-mm diameter steel links. Ma-
terial to match assembly type.
9) Expansion slip joint: Internal sleeve 100 mm long. Material to match as-
sembly type.

mill finish.
2) Tube: ASTM B429, Alloy 6061, Temper T6, Schedule 40, drawn, and
mill finish.
3) Handrail Fittings: Pressure fit.
(a) Pipe and Tube: ASTM B221M, Alloy 6061, Temper T6.
(b) Castings: ASTM B179.
(c) End Caps, Base Plates, and Sleeves: ASTM B221M, Alloy 6061,
Temper T6.
4) Shims: Fiberglass.
5) Filler Metal: AWS A5.10.

2. General Use: Galvanized steel, 31-mm nominal diameter, standard weight pipe,
ASTM A53 Schedule 40; connections shall be continuous type.

M. Stair Treads and Platforms: Non-slip, steel plates, and safety type.

N. Welding Electrodes: Type and metal which will be compatible with metal being
welded, and as recommended by metal fabricator, unless otherwise specified.

O. Paint: Section 09940, Metal Painting, except that rust-inhibitive shop coat for covers
and frames, safety tread, and surfaces which shall not bear pedestrian and vehicle traf-
fic may be fabricator’s standard rust inhibitor.

P. Galvanize Touch-up: MIL-P-21035.

Q. Non-Shrink Grout: ASTM C1107.

R. Corrosion Inhibitor:
1. (For metal surface which abut surface constituted of metal other) than those of
metal fabrication: Either bituminous paint or tape manufactured especially for the
purpose.
2. For metal surfaces that will abut cementitious surfaces: Bituminous paint.

2.02 FABRICATION

A Verify dimensions at Site before staring to fabricate products. Fabricate products as


specified on the Construction Drawings. Built-up shall be true-to-line, strength, and
have no defects. Shop connections shall be welded type and field connections shall be
bolted type, unless otherwise indicated.
1. Forming: Form joints that are exposed to weather to exclude water. Create sharp
angles and lines at the surface being connected. Fabricate and fasten metal work
in a manner, which will ensure that metalwork shall be undistorted, finish shall be

unaffected, and fasteners shall not be overstressed. Fit metalwork, which shall be
built into cementitious structures, with anchors.
2. Fastening: Conceal fasteners, in so far as practicable to do so. Drill and counter-
sink holes for bolts and screws, unless otherwise indicated. Arrange lugs and
brackets in a manner, which shall ensure a neat and substantial assembly.
3. Welding: Welding of steel, aluminum and stainless steel shall be at least as speci-
fied in AWS D1.1, D1.2, A5.4 and A5.9 and in a manner which shall ensure no
discoloring of finish surface and either prevent or minimize distortion of finish
surfaces. Remove weld spatter and welding oxides from finish surface. Heat-treat
welds only when welds are indicated to be stress-relieved. Weld hardware-
mounting plates in-place, unless otherwise indicated.
a. Welding of dissimilar metal: AWS classification E309Mo filler metal shall be
used for making welded joints in Type 316 stainless steel with carbon or low-
alloy steel.
4. Finishing: Finish welds flush, and grid finish side smooth. Either mill or smoothly
grind edges and ends of finish surfaces; round corners. Grind and polish surfaces,
which have been subjected to severe forming operations and remove foreign ma-
terial, rinse surface with potable water, and dry surface.
5. Galvanizing: Hot-dip fabricated carbon steel product shall be galvanized at least
as specified in ASTM A123, A153M, or A385, as applicable. Degree of galvaniz-
ing shall be as specified in ASTM, Section 5.
6. Cleaning Remove loose mill scales, flake rust, and rust pitting. Wire-brush dam-
aged galvanized surfaces in a manner, which removes loose and cracked coating.
7. Shop Painting:
a. Damaged galvanized surfaces: Apply two coats of galvanize touch-up; dry
film of each coat shall be thinner than 0.0375 mm.
b. Non-galvanized carbon steel surfaces: Apply one coat of rust inhibitive pri-
mer. Brush-out primers, fills corners, and prevent primer from running and
sagging.
8. Corrosion Control: Apply corrosion inhibitor to fabricated metal surfaces which
abut surfaces constituted of material other than that of the fabricated metal prod-
uct.
9. Shop Assembling: Assemble fabricated products into largest assemblages practi-
cable. Match finishes surfaces in a manner, which produce hairline contacts and
continuity of line and design. Accurately fit and securely anchor joints of finish
surfaces. Temporarily assemble products, which are not feasible to be shop-
assembled, mark for field assembling, and disassemble.
10. General-Use Safety Railing: fully-weld connections, heat and make bends without
distorting metal, and cope and weld intersections.
11. Structural Steel Door Frames: miter and weld corners. Weld anchor for securing
frame to concrete and masonry. Plug-weld bar stops from back of frame. Cu-out
apertures for mortise hardware according to templates. Reinforce apertures; spot-
weld 2 mm thick plate to back of frame, and drill and tap plates for machine
screws.
12. Lintel: Cut lintel 300 mm longer than width of opening, unless otherwise indi-
cated. Either tack-weld multiple members, weld back-to-back, or install spacers.
If veneer lintel will be secured to concrete, weld anchors to back of lintel.
13. Stair: Close-fit joints; provide closures at ends of stair channels.
14. Access Door: Aluminum or AISI Type 316 stainless steel with matching frame,
anchors hardware and locking device. Minimum door thickness shall be 0.75 mm.

15. Equipment Access Hatch: Flush type floor hatch with 75 mm hot-dip galvanized
channel frame, anchors, 6 mm thick hot-dip galvanized steel reinforced checkered
plate cover and all stainless steel hardware. Provide compression spring operators,
automatic hold-open arm, inside snap lock and removable wrench lift handle. De-
sign hatch to withstand 14.5 kN/m2.
16. Railings: Carbon steel or aluminum pipe or tube or stain less steel as indicated on
the Construction Drawings.
a. Fabrication:
1) Cut tube and pipe square within two degrees and to lengths within 3 mm.
Remove burrs from cut degrees.
2) Welding:
(a) Miter and cope intersections of posts and rails within two degrees; fit to
within 0.05 mm and weld all around.
(b) Thoroughly fuse without undercutting and overlapping.
(c) Remove splatter, grind exposed welds to blend, and contour surfaces to
match those adjacent. Discoloration of finished surfaces shall be classed
as defective work.
3) Form and assemble joints, which will be exposed, to the weather to exclude
water. Close exposed ends of steel pipe either by welding 3-mm thick steel
plate over ends or by installing prefabricated fittings. Provide explosion-
prevention holes for hot-dip galvanized operations at closed ends of pipes.
Close ends of aluminum pipe or tube or stainless steel pipe with same mate-
rial as the pipe or tube welded as specified in Article 2.02 A.16.a.1). (b).
4) Chain: securely attach to rings at fixed and removable rails with tamperproof
closed sleeve.
5) Insulation where railing contacts dissimilar materials: Either fiberglass or bi-
tumen.
6) Galvanize fabricated and assembled steel railing at lest as specified in ASTM
A123.

2.03 FINISHES

A Steel
1. Clean surfaces of rust, scale, grease contamination matter prior to finishing.
2. Do not prime surfaces in direct contact with concrete or where field welding is re-
quired.
3. Prime paint items with two coats.
4. Structural Steel Members: Galvanize after fabrication to ASTM A123. Provide
minimum 440 g/m2 galvanized coating.
5. Non-structural Items: Galvanized after fabrication to ASTM A123. Provide min-
imum 440 g/m2 galvanized coating.
6. Chrome Plating: ASTM B177, weight, nickel-chromium alloy, polished finish.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine surfaces on and to which products will be installed for defects, which would
impair installation of metal fabrications before metal fabrications, are installed. Cor-
rect defects prior to installation.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Clean and strip primed metal where site welding is required.

B. Supply inserts and anchors required to be cast into concrete or embedded in masonry
with setting templates as required to perform the work.

C. Apply galvanize touch-up when original primer is damaged. Thoroughly wire-brush


surfaces on which zinc coating has been damaged, and remove loose and cracked zinc
coating; then, apply two coats of galvanize touch-up to wire brushed surfaces; dry film
thickness of each coat shall be not thinner than 0.0375 mm.

3.03 INSTALLATION

A. Make installed products rigid and secure. Install supports and anchors for metal fabri-
cations before installing those fabrications. Do not overload structures during erection.

B. General railing: secure to metal or concrete surfaces. When surfaces to which railings
will be secured are out-of line, shim railings to fit. Fully-weld railing at connections
and grind smooth. Set posts in sleeves, which have been set in concrete, and grout post
therein with non – shrink grout. Affix handrail flanges to walls with stainless steel
bolts set in expansion shields, unless otherwise indicated. Provide expansion slip joints
within 100 mm of posts on not more than 7 m on center. Place graphite on sleeve.

C. Bar anchors: Lie flat in masonry joints or embed in concrete as shown on the Con-
struction Drawings.
D. Metal ships ladders: Bolt to wall and floor with clip angles and expansion bolts.

E. Ladders: Bolt ladders at bottom, at top, and at intervals on wall, at not more than 1,200
mm O.C. Fit each ladder assembly and each group of embedded rungs having a total
rise of more than 6 m with a flat bar type cage enclosure fabricated from stainless
steel.

F. Trench and pit covers: Set in angle frames which have been embedded in concrete.

G. Repair of defective work: Remove stained or otherwise defective work, and replace
with material which meet the specifications.

H. Safety Railing:
1. Verify location of existing base plates. Furnish and install additional base plates if
required, drill holes and set anchor bolts in epoxy.
2. Set handrail parallels with walkway surface; ensure smooth, unwrapped horizontal
and vertical alignment.
3. Setting Posts:
a. Remove dust and foreign matter from surfaces on and in which posts will be
set.
b. Install expansion anchors 50 mm long.

c. Install expansion anchors 75 mm long where plate fillers are required to


maintain horizontal alignment.
4. Assemble connections end-to-end and splice joints with internal sleeves.
5. Fitting Assembly:
a. Assemble pipe at joints, and drive together within 0.05 mm.
b. Assemble fitting posts before pressing rails onto fittings.
6. Drill rivets holes and countersink for a flush fit.
7. Expansion Slip Joints:
a. Fasten one side with two blind rivets: set at 120 degrees interval from top of
pipe.
b. Place joints within 100 mm of posts and on not more than 7,000 mm centers.
8. Cleaning:
a. Wash railing thoroughly with rag, clean water, and mild soap; rinse with
clean water.
b. If stain remains after washing, remove finish and restore as specified in fabri-
cator recommendations.
9. Touch-up: Upon completion of the installation, areas where finish coat has been
damaged shall be sanded smooth and touched-up, with the same prime as applied
at the factory and refinished. If touch-up is obvious, the member shall be replaced
with new one.
10. Furnish and install protection form galvanic action where dissimilar metals will
abut and where ferrous metal and aluminum will contact cementiitious surfaces.

3.04 INSPECTION AND SITE TESTS

A General Requirements:
1. Be responsible for visual inspection and necessary correction of all deficiencies in
materials and workmanship.
2. Test materials referred to in Article 2.01 at the plate of manufacturer, or elsewhere
if convenient and appropriate, to ensure that they comply with the requirements of
the relevant standards and specifications.
3. Test fabricated steelwork at the plate of fabrication, (or elsewhere if convenient
and appropriate) to ensure that it complies with the requirements specified in Arti-
cle 2.02 of this Section.
4. All loose rust and scale, slag residue and weld spatter shall be removed prior to
inspection.
5. No protective treatment other than the pre-fabrication primer shall be applied to
the work until the appropriate inspection and testing has been carried out.

B. Structural Steel Inspection and Testing.


1. Inspection and Testing of structural steel fabrications shall be as specified in Sec-
tion 05120.

C. Non-destructive Inspection and Testing of Welds


1. For structural steel fabrications, the non-destructive inspection and testing shall be
as specified in Section 05120.

D. Visual Defect Limits: Visual inspection shall determine the following conditions for
satisfactory welds:
1. Thorough fusion exists between weld metal and base meta.
2. There are no cracks and stray-arcing spots.

3. All craters are filled to the full cross-section of the weld.


4. Welds are free from overlap.

E. Remedial Work:
1. Welds who do not comply with the Specification shall be repaired. Welds in alu-
minum alloys shall not be repaired more than once.

3.05 PAINTING

A. As specified in Section 09940.
