Acid Activities

Activity 1 - Experimentation and Familiarisation

Experiment freely with the large range of loops that come with Acid.).

Some style CD's available include Techno, Rock, Latin, DJ, Hip Hop

At home you might like to download the software from Sony Media, and build up a loop
library by Googling for free acid loops.
Experiment with changing key, speeding up and slowing down, looping, dragging,
drawing, pasting, panning and volume.

Remember that digital audio will clip and crackle if you have everything turned all the
way up so that the DB Meter is constantly in the red. Make sure your levels are turned
down so that the meter is only going into the red every now and then.

Activity 2 - Adding Tempo and Key Changes (12 Bar Blues)

What to do:-
Create a song with 2 distinct sections of 12 bars in length. (The Bar numbers are across
the top of the screen.)
Right click on the horizontal bar underneath the time marks on the main Acid screen.
Choose to “Add Key Change" at the following bars.
1. |A |A |A |A |D |D |A |A |E |D |A |A |
Repeat this pattern over the next 12 bars
Replace bar 12 with some kind of drum fill or effect
Add a tempo change at bar 13
EXTENSION: If you want to be really tricky, add a few tempo changes in bar 12 during
the fill to make the music sound like it is gradually changing speed

Activity 3 - Construct a basic Rock or Pop song

What to do:-
Select 4 loops to represent each of the basic instruments in a rock band:-
Drums
Bass
Guitar
Keyboard
These loops will be used for the VERSE section.

Choose a second loop for each instrument to make a CHORUS section.

Use this structure:- INTRO (4 bars only), VERSE, CHORUS, VERSE, CHORUS,
MIDDLE, CHORUS, CODA.Each section should have 8 bars (or a multiple of 8).
Use these chord progressions for each section:-
VERSE: |A |A |D |D |E |E |D |D |CHORUS & CODA: |A |A |C |C |D |D |A |A |
Use a mixture of loops from your VERSE and CHORUS to create the INTRO, MIDDLE,
and CODA sections - mix and match these loops to create variety and contrast.
Make up your own chord progression for the MIDDLE section

Activity 4 - Movie Soundtrack

SCENARIOYou are a film composer who has just been hired to compose a soundtrack for a sea
thriller called CALM DEAD SEA.

PLOT SUMMARY The film is a high budget epic set on an abandoned sailing boat, miles out at
sea. It stars Bruce Willis as the hero, Jennifer Anniston as the beautiful and helpless damsel in
distress, and Brad Pitt as the evil villain. This is pure Hollywood, at its best! (Needless to say, if you
do well with this soundtrack you will be set for life!)

YOUR BRIEFCreate an original piece of music that could be used to accompany the scene outlined
below. The total length of the scene is exactly 1 minute. It is important that you succesfully interpret
what is happening on screen and and reflect this in the soundtrack by creating an appropriate
musical atmosphere and mood. Think suspense, thriller, suprise!!!

Make sure that your music corresponds to the timings listed for each event. Choose your loops
carefully to ensure that you create the required atmosphere.
