lyrical ballads. Use the poems in your course as reference.
Preface to the Lyrical Balled:
The preface to the lyrical balled is an essay, composed by William Wordsworth, for the second
edition (published in January1801, and often referred to as the “1800”) of the poetry collection
Lyrical ballads, and the greatly expanded in the third edition of 1802. it has come to be seen as
de facto manifesto of the Romantic movement.

The four guidelines of the manifesto include:

• Ordinary life is the best subject for poetry.
• Everyday language is best suited for poetry. Wordsworth uses common man's
language.
• Expression of feelings is more important than action or plot.
• “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of emotion” that “takes its origin from
emotion, recollected in tranquility.

Points from essay “preface to Lyrical Balled” by William Wordsworth:

• Use of real/common language in poetry unlike the classical writers. Contrast
with contemporary writers.
• He wants innovation inn poetry for its best of expression of thoughts to better
communicate with nature.
• Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful felling, poverty should serve a
purpose.
• His poetry is both feelings and thoughts oriented, he gives felling and situations.
• He gives realistic, sensitive touch to his poetry (to bring man back to nature)
• Quality literary work does not need necessity of rhyme and meter.
• Rhyme and meter should be used for simplicity, attractive expression and for
pleasure.
• He is in favor of critical analyzing the ideas before creativity of any literary
work.
• He is inn favor of re-visiting his creation to eradicate flows from creativity.

Essay on Keats poetry in the light of preface to lyrical Balled:

• Ode to Nightingale
• Ode to Gracian urn

John Keats reveals the condition of a common individual using real common language. He
brought innovation in his poetry for the best expression of thoughts to better communicate with
nature and interlink things.

As he expresses fascination and appreciation for bird's happy condition and compares it with
miserable condition of human life on earth. Keats wishes to escape into nightingale's word
however finally realizes that solution of problems lies in facing them.
Poetry is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, thoughts oriented, gives feelings to
actions and situations, having realistic and sensitive touch and should a purpose. The “Gracian
urn” reveals that branches of tree will always remain green, the lover will enjoys their present
state, lover will always finds his beloved in front of his eyes. The lovers will never grows old.
On the other hand earthly things will always give sorrow and cloyed as it keeps on changing.

Keats romanticism was a revolt against the artificial, pseudo-classical poetry (serving an un-
natural purpose) in 18th century. Keats, Shelly and Barron constitute the later romantics. Keats
believes in art for art's sake. It's sole purpose of writing poetry was to provide pleasure.

There is comparison of art with nature. The ode represents Keats mature vision consist of one of
his control philosophical doctrines of art itself i.e “the truth is beauty and and beauty truth”.

It has intellectual basics of truth and emotional basis in beauty. It may appeal the sensuousness
or just the emotion of common people, but Keats response extends from sensuous to spiritual
and from passionate to intellectual. Keats establishes a balance between the real and ideal art
and life, and he finds the deepest of reality in his balance.

Essay on Shelley's poetry in the light of preface to lyrical Balled:

• Hymn to Intellectual Beauty
• Ode to west wind

The speaker goes through introspection and praises the power of knowledge. He wonders how
the power f knowledge can be recaptured. He says that this invisible power floats among
humans and sometimes this power visit human heart. This internal power is reflected through
summer winds, moonbeams, memory of music, or any other thing that has its mystery and
grace. Such thing are precious according to the poet.

The poet suggests that instead following the superstitious notions, people should concentrate on
the grace of reality and truth. Finally in the concluding stanza of the poem, the poet the speaker
by worshiping knowledge of nature, he has obtained calm and victory over fear.

The writers compares love with knowledge and at the end he says knowledge is not based on
emotion just like love knowledge is something which lights up heart of people knowledge is
more powerful and its help individual in various aspect of life while love only based on
emotions hate is based on emotions knowledge give you intellectual ability knowledge converts
sterile man into and intellectual fertile.

Shelley was a science student due to which there is a scientific flavor in his literary work which
makes it more interesting and pleasurable along with imagination and Romanticism. He uses
rhyme and meter for simplicity and attractive expression. He uses his poetry to serve a serious
purpose by adopting realistic approach. In Ode to West wind the written disclose a natural fact
by giving it name of reform. Shelley reveals the replacement of old(destroyer) with new
(preserver). The message given through the poem is that West wind flows away along with
weakened leaves and takes the seed along with it but the leaves for somewhere else again buds
off which grows into a beautiful flower or fruitful tree (preserved) .The impacts on Rivers and
clouds are also mentioned ,which shows continuous change in natural process. The written
imagines certain things by saying these particular lines.
If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear;
If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee;
A wave to pant beneath thy power, and share

The impulse of thy strength, only less free

Than thou, O uncontrollable! If even
I were as in my boyhood, and could be

The comrade of thy wanderings over Heaven,

As then, when to outstrip thy skiey speed
Scarce seem'd a vision; I would ne'er have striven

As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need.

Oh, lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud!
I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed!

A heavy weight of hours has chain'd and bow'd

One too like thee: tameless, and swift, and proud.
