MÓNICA DE LA TORRE / ON TRANSLATION
At midday, the translator meets with the poet at a café at the intersection
where for decades whores and cross-dressers have lined up at
night for passers-by to peruse.
3
a mí.
The translator knows that nothing the poet has ever said or written
reveals as much about him as the expression on his face when he
was asked to pose for a picture. He greets posterity with a devilish
grin. To the translator’s delight, he’s forced to repeat the gesture at
least three or four times. The camera has no film.

We are what disinhabits the space of memory. Horde.
Stampede. Immersion. Diaspora. A hole in a pocket. A
ghost who refuses to abandon you. We are that invasion.
A body made of murmurings. A body that doesn’t appear,
that no one wishes to name.

How is a body recognized? How to know which is the
right one if it is below ground and there are many stacked
one on top of another? If the halflight. If the ashes. If this
thick mud steadily covers it all. How to claim you, Tadeo, if
the bodies here are just debris?

Juana Adcock - One-handed
Last Thursday I got up and decided to cut off my hand. I saw it all very clearly and
when I see something very clearly I don’t dither even one second. The ultimate
work of art or something like that, although I guess I thought it’d grow back, like
hair does. I started with the left ring finger. Cut it off just below the knuckle, flex-
ing the finger to see better where to cut. Like cutting up a chicken. Blood didn’t
spurt. The knife was serrated and didn’t have much of an edge, but it didn’t really
need one. Then the middle finger. Then the pinky, where a bit of bone was left
sticking out of the flesh. Half the job done I changed my mind: I remembered that
the fingers weren’t going to grow back, so I left on the thumb and index finger, to
retain some of the hand’s functionality. A bandage to hide the wound. How long
will it take to scar over? Interview with my father: now how are you going to work,
to write? I almost always write by hand, or I can use voice recognition software. It
occurs to me that if I learned to play the piano I’d be a lot better. With my feet. I
could design some pedals…
Every day since then the knuckles left over have disturbed me. My bony hands.
Meanwhile I work serving coffee in a café that has three floors. I have to learn to
organize myself according to my abilities, and remember things, and bring up the
trays in the right order so as not to make too many trips.

lacking that dreamy blue head. I also read
that the mallard sometimes fucks by force, that in fact
rape is common and frequent,
and that many of these depredations take place in mid-air
(I’m going to get a tattoo that says
The canard may give a flying fuck, but I don’t).
In Holland, a man of science
was busy writing an essay
when two mallards smacked into his window.
Both were male.
Upon stepping out to observe them
the man deduced that one of the ducks was in pursuit of love
at the moment of the crash,
while the other was fleeing him;
now, one was dead
while the other pecked at his head.
After confirming that the dead one was immobile and passive,
as the dead have every right to be,
the active duck mounted the corpse with great energy,
honking explosively,
and unfurled his plumage with solar pomp
as if he were posing for an insignia
or a cameo on the reverse of a coin.’
27
In the middle of the afternoon we came to the edge of a town,
in which the violet of the flowers
and the red of the bricks proclaimed
the mundane death and resurrection
of all things.

30
él, por su parte,
defenderá su posible inexistencia.
Por cada argumento que hagas
tomarás un trago de licor.
Por cada argumento que él haga
él hará lo mismo.
Habrá que economizar
y pensar bien cada palabra.
El hombre te pregunta
si te apetece el juego
mientras el terso rumor de la nieve
cae fuera de sintonía sobre el mar.

Alejandro Tarrab - Arte Nuestro
Centro, cetro. Bailamos. Juntamos de tal manera las cabezas, que
podemos oírnos: arte nuestro. Construimos un refugio, un altar con retratos:
nosotros hablando sinsentido, bailando a empellones, recio. Después vemos las
fotos daguerrotípicas, quemadas y amarillas, y lloramos casi. Juntos.
rastra hacia otro extremo?
Tu cabeza
junto a la mía (percusiones, casi no puedo oírte). En secreto me cautivas hay que
bailar. Algo efímero, aciago y fraccionado. Azaroso.

Alejandro Tarrab - They Took Him Out With a Roundhouse
Somebody who did show his feet, and use them to defeat
Robin three times was Kato, the Green Hornet’s seeing eye dog.
With Bruce everything looks like the movies.
Kato wore a mask that was a prosthesis (sh!),
like the nail I’ve got here in my leg.
43
sword metal to cut other swords.
Whence came what came:
the same wound they gave me again in the Western Penitentiary.
Whence these scars.
Know who put together a few cars like the Batmobile and put them
together out of other cars, studded with bits and pieces he’d picked up,
decommissioned navy and junkyard detritus, on the independent circuits?
Aarón Mil Máscaras,
Aaron One Thousand Masks.
The trunks on his cars spun round and out came the machine gun
(sh!), several antennae connected to the Attorney General.
I was very impressed.
All this is not in The Vampires, nor The Mortal Key, not even
44
in The Macabre Beasts of the Barrio.
It was used to resolve people smuggling, slaves forced to go North,
accidents seen at high temperatures. Aerial towers, aerial views
of big and small roundhouses, like the metal of my leg.
This Lord’s big trick was that under the mask he wore another
and under that another, and another. Masks that the people designed for him,
made by the people to fight against el narco. Masks
that covered masks until you got to a prosthesis that was his face.
The prosthesis was a Calvary and, as such, diverse people sought out and adored it,
they thought suffering, salvation and the souvenir were complete.
They tried to tear it off (sh!) And they tore it off.
Between my Mother and the hospice, there was a hotel run by an aunt.
A blind aunt that nobody cared about, apart from her blindness.
People are curious but they don’t know anything.
45
Junk. A screen the size of a wallet.

Alejandro Tarrab - Lives
Lives
I want to say me, with my voice ‘feeble’ as it is, in the confines of the faroff,
a radio-conference about radio and that’s all.
Hear my voice ‘feeble’ as it is, transformed,
electrified by the magic of science. Hear hear them
my voice ‘feeble’ as it is, touched by static.
I want to say I would like with my voice unmade, assaulted
by a self-portrait. Figure of me, built by me, thousands of times,
47
and by a few fellow travelers, by that I mean scumbums.
To hear them reply me: your voice ‘feeble’ as it always has been.
Only magnified now, tossed into the confines of the faroff.
Something about myself, about my own self portrait and the phenomenon
of science and radiotelephony. A radio-conference held in,
say, 1925 or thereabouts, that is, before or after or in the exact same
charged moment, electrified by punchers and my voice and the radio and science
and the unheardof art of science making a mess of my sketch,
with my voice ‘feeble’ as it is, i mean, and that’s all.

Diana Garza Islas - Matatenna
She says: I want to feature in the lists. She says: I want to feel lots of things, like
when I was dead.
There’s someone here. It’s like a princess who looks at me who is really a man eat-
ing me.
Here there’s only a giant crocodile and lots of sun. The sun, contrary to what we
might imagine, isn’t green.
Now there’s you. You take photos of the meat. A voice says: Welcome to your
names.
We know that whichever voice is the voice of the girl I was. That voice assures me
that the Earth has four layers: Sicoca, Coleia, Isi, and Ife locale.
(Or someone was filming my abduction. Someone called either Myrna or Brucol-
eco.)
There’s no more to say. We are in my house, open, the one from before. The pool
disappeared but there’s to be a party. My father’s face is on the dome. I don’t look
at it and it stays there like an ancient, much-loved demon.

Straight To Hell From a Poetry Reading
He explains that his explanation does not in any way impinge on the autonomy of
his text and ruins it even more.
He explains that there is something inscrutable that has remained intact and ruins
it again.
He explains that in truth he’s never been very good at ‘translating’ the inscrutable
and ruins it once more.
He explains that he withdrew from poetry because the inscrutable is a vicious shit
and ruins it.
He explains how it’ll probably be hard for them to understand his decision and
ruins it afresh.
He explains that he categorically does not believe all those present to be a gaggle
of idiots and ruins it yet further.
He explains that he did not mean to stick his finger into the only female reporter
in the room and ruins it.
He explains that is was not his intention to crush the windpipe of the poet sat next
60
to him and ruins it again.
He explains that the fire is too high for his delicate skin and he completely ruins it.

The canard may give a flying fuck, but I don’t).
mientras que el otro le huía;
soltando graznidos a metralla,

Sonya’s so good that all the guys pick on her, so the evening’s narrative goes.
I’ve heard she wears yellow t-shirts each time to match her hair. Last time her ten-
nis shoes got so dusty that she had to throw them out because there was no way
on earth that they could be white again.
Trunks shrink like deflated accordions, like melodramatic arguments after
they’ve met face to face with someone’s indifference. A baby cries and pouts
while her mother is trying to scoop more Velveta on to her nacho. The father is
strung out on something, someone in back of us says. A teenager with severe
acne turns around and fires a dart full of cavities into my gaze. We give in to the
pleasure of destruction for the sheer sake of waste. What inside, the collision, the
jerk on the nape that makes the driver wonder whether this one is it. Swallow me
dust while the crowd cheers and claps its French fries away into the space be-
tween a nearby neon and the floodlights gathering an army of many sized moths.
188

Round. Fists stuffed with dun feathers cast off mooring ropes. Five sailors have
the effrontery to torch the Gelderland [El Güeldres es el barco en el que zarparon
los marineros y se toparon con la isla de Mauricio] in their dreams. Six pierrot
camisoles and seven, seven battered barrels. A shattered thumb. Stretched out
recumbent, Mauritius dissolves into the horizon. Its ochre dazzles.
Our arms akimbo, the deck. Drool dangles, shot through with blood. Six fears
bloated with booze, the figurehead. The Mongol’s stunted tongue. His blackened
tongue that was made ours. Little bubbles. Kindly soak us.
Five sailors sigh. Red, Van Warwijck’s palm. Five sailors spill a single tear. Brusque

No one’ll ever sing to me as mother did, her tits. Resting her chin on my bald
pate.
You, chewing at her nipple – polestar’s tip – to make

hombre que me come.
Esa voz me asegura

Alejandro Tarrab - Our Art
We despise each other. With sad folk songs, with hard blows from sound stones we
berate each other. Low blows to the face. We like what we do. We are here to hate
each other, to spit on each other and drag each other out by the face. With needles
in our breast, my heart. Center, scepter. We dance. We put our heads together in
such a way that we can hear ourselves: our art. We build a refuge, a shrine with por-
traits: of us, babbling, dancing and shoving, sturdy. Later we look at the daguerre-
otypical photos, burnt and yellow, and we weep almost. Together. With needles in
our eyes, my heart, we build what’s ours: sad songs, hard blows that project and
may be read, a feathery fine dust on the skin. In those photos there are children in
formaldehyde. Misshapen fetuses dissolving in the image. Aberrations with two
heads saying art to each other. We see them and implore them, for our sake and
that of our children’s children and so on. We soon end up chuckling. It’s moving.
How does one thing lead to another? How does one extreme stay behind and drag
us to the other extreme? Laugh at what we are, the needles now receding. Seda-
tion. Contractions of joy. Shoves of joy together. We feel, then, a new impulse to
create. Something we call ours, that is neither yours nor mine. Something inherit-
ed, grounded, linked to a story but that is not a story. Something alien, not-original,
that burns us and we must say so. Something flagrant sans author. A performance
that gets it right in the not-center of the created. Your head together with mine
(percussion, I almost cannot hear you). In secret you captivate me I have to dance.
Something ephemeral, fateful, divided. Risky. Led, hard blows to the stone. We
are here to despise each other. There’s a song that says (I’m no good at translating):
we’ll undress in the dark and my fingers will walk the crenellations of your spine.

7. se cruzan adentro
8. se trenzan a sí mismos
9. en la estructura
232

a ver.

inercias. Así voy flotando yo, Tadeo.

Karen Villeda - Constantinopla
No one knows when he was born nor when he died. Maybe he existed only on
the lips of a thousand men and a thousand women. Hodja they called him. Hodja,
the Master. Hodja rode backwards on a donkey and was to be seen always in the
Madrasa, where he sheltered his existence until he knew he was dying. They say
you can see Hodja buried from outside of the far from pompous mausoleum he
lies in. There is ironwork all around and there are three open doors. The fourth,
which gives on to his tomb, is closed. Here, in Istanbul, lives his closest friend:
Tamburlaine the Lame. Weight on his left foot, chewing fried goose, Tamburlaine
would ask Hodja about the days of the tainted moon, and patiently the Master
would answer that he knew nothing on the subject. Neither does the little man
behind this door know when Hodja was born or when he died, he who took the
moon from a well and mounted it in the nighttime sky. Nor does he ask ques-
tions, since he’s been squatting there in the darkness, so apart from the visitors,
with the door half-open and his mouth attached.

is never a dun-colored skeleton who, with his passing, covers with soot that which
was built before his birth. He who is walking knows that all empires are falling
here. Each and every one of them is on a par with the shoulder blades of that
man who did not happen. He who is walking has a brilliant future and death has
detained him.
While they dress up the children younger than three as sultans, you’ll be my doll
with seagreen eyes. And whatever it is you think love is, I’m that. Just that.
Six minarets on your palace, Constantine. Elephant feet that march over you. To
the present, the minarets seem pencils in the distance, but they were laborious
mammals in their day. Woe unto you, St. Constantine. Never more shall you pray
to the Virgin, where century after century sultan after sultan has knelt. All the men
who violated your palace answered to the name Mustapha. All the fault of Sinan,
the Ottomans’ - Christian, once – architect. Sinan the janissary. Sinan he who
cursed the cross to build those six minarets for Ahmed I, who did not assassinate
his brother Mustapha (although they claim the contrary). Six minarets to defy
Mecca, and offer a counterfeit pilgrimage to the poor, such as those of Maurita-
nius or, perhaps, the Khawarij of Algeria. Seven minarets has Mecca, but in here
there are mosaics they brought from İznik, little Rome. One of them has lost its
shine. On an oil lamp there is an ostrich egg that stops cobwebs getting in. One
only for all that blind window. There are handwoven rugs. Their straw and em-
erald green tones emulate tulips, because Allah is a tulip in Arabic. There isn’t a
single broken chair. There are one hundred Korans. There are women. Those that
are veiled. Women washed in pure water, to pray for the fourth time in the day.
Washed their hands, washed their arms up to the elbows, washed the mouth, the
face, the feet. Washed three times in pure water. When they wash their noses it
is so they can scent the places of The Highest One. The Muezzin is about to call
247
them. Praying is better than dreaming. All hearts in the Blue Mosque are real,
shared antediluvian throb. Prayer is more lasting than dream.

do que a continuación describo: 1. Los versos que corresponden a un
número primo (el primero, el segundo, el tercero, el quinto, el séptimo,
el onceavo, etc.) fueron escritos por mí. 2. Los versos cuarto y sexto se
dejaron vacíos. 3.

Note on the translations: The poems included here by Mónica de la
Torre and Omar Pimienta were translated by the poets themselves; Sara
Uribe was translated by John Pluecker. The translation of the other po-
ems was facilitated by John Z. Komurki, almost always in collaboration
with the author. These collaborations gave rise to a variety of less con-
ventional approaches. Eugenio Tisseli’s ‘Three Threads’, for example,
called for a radical decision, as explained below. Juana Adcock origi-
nally wrote the poems included here in English, then translated them
into Spanish; the translator didn’t get this memo and translated the
Spanish versions back into English: those versions appear here, lightly
edited by the poet. Other texts reflect a degree of creative reworking
on the part of the poet, to some extent in collaboration with the trans-
lator, giving rise to a work that is neither original nor translation. Much
advice and technical support was generously provided by the poets
Robin Myers, Eduardo Padilla, Tim MacGabhann, María Cristina Hall
and Mariana Rodríguez.

Notes on the poems/notas sobre las poemas:
The 79 verses of this poem are the result of the method described be-
low: 1. The verses corresponding to a prime number (first, second, third,
fifth, seventh, eighth etc.) were written by me. 2. The fourth and sixth
verses were left empty. 3. The verses corresponding to a non-prime
number were obtained using a distortion algorithm which follows the
following steps: a) The sub-multiple verses were concatenated. For ex-
ample, the seed of verse twenty arose from the concatenation of vers-
es ten, five, four and two: torsión de la rada de la troica hacia ella
270
misma, tres caminos, se entretejen. b) This concatenation took place in
the following order: i. It was translated into English using an automatic
translation algorithm available online. ii. Synonyms were found corre-
sponding to each word of the translated concatenation, using a syno-
nym server also available online. iii. The result was translated back into
Spanish. c) The result of this process was retouched manually in order
to correct grammatical inconsistencies. Verse 20, for example, ended
up like this: gira la agencia de la carroza hacia sus mismos caminos: el
trío se tuerce. 4. The writing process was interrupted, by chance, by
an error in the algorithm. The algorithm for verse distortions is partially
available here: http://motorhueso.net/pac
