Company portfolio

Company Overview
Pathao Ltd. is the fastest growing technology startup in Bangladesh having services across Ride
sharing, Food Delivery, Parcel and Courier verticals. The company was founded in 2015 by a
group of young entrepreneurs which quickly became a nationwide brand and cult. The company
was recently funded by Gojek, an Indonesia based motorcycle ride sharing company. Initially,
the company started its operations as a parcel delivery company with an android application for
the service delivery process. The company quickly resorted to the aforementioned verticals and
is now the leading player in the ride sharing market for motorcycles and quickly over taking the
cars ride sharing market from Uber South Asia, recently acquired by Singapore based Grab. The
competition will be fierce in the coming few months. Pathao was able to break the game in the
end of 2016 where the technology touched millions and now is a part of everyone’s life, whether
anyone is commuting to work or simply ordering food from home.

5
Background Information
Fahim Saleh, a successful entrepreneur from New York, had a vision of creating a successful
venture in Bangladesh, his home soil. The intent was not only to focus on profit maximization,
but help people with their services, with a stakeholder benefit oriented principle. Through
Pathao, Saleh wanted to create jobs and provide employment opportunities for people. Together
with Hussain M. Elius and Shifat Adnan, the chief executive officer and chief technology officer,
respectively, they created Pathao which they believed had the opportunity and scope to “change
the world as we know”. They aimed to create a platform that will change the traditional
mechanism of logistics and public transport in the city. Through dedication and hard work, they
had been able to create a proprietary technology that sets Pathao apart from other logistics
service provider in the country. Pathao’s tag line “Delivery made easy” sums up the core
principle of their business, which is to provide fast, secure, easy delivery services to its
customers, be it E-commerce, vendors, or individual clients. According to Elius, they wanted to
make logistics as easy as sending an email. There are other courier operators in Bangladesh, all
of whom are slow and inefficient, but the founders believed that they could leverage technology
to bring a paradigm shift in how goods are transported (Hassan, 2016). On the other end of the
spectrum, Pathao launched their Pathao Rides services in 2016. with the moto “Your Journey
Our responsibility” which was able to take advantage of existing ideas and available resources to
create the first ever motorcycle taxi service in the country. (Ullah & Islam, 2017) Pathao started
their journey as a delivery service back in 2015 with own fleet of motorcycles and cycles. They
acted as a delivery service for several E-Commerce Services of Bangladesh, including Daraz of
Alibaba Group (then Rocket Internet). Later on, 2016, Pathao started bike sharing services on
mid-2016 and had successfully signed up more than 100000 drivers and around 1 million users
by March of 2018 across the country. In an interview with TechCrunch, Pathao CEO Hussain M
Elius confirmed that Pathao currently has a fleet of 50,000 bikes and the company is valued over
$100 million as of April 2018. Pathao has raised a total of $12.8M in funding over 7 rounds.
Their latest funding was raised on Aug 28, 2018 from a Secondary Market round.
Currently Pathao have 9086 freelancer registered cyclists and around 3, 00,000 Riders and
Drivers in 3 Cities.

6
Company Profile

Pathao Parcel (aka. Fulfillment) is that the mother ship of Pathao wherever as Pathao Rides and
Pathao Food is the secondary varieties of delivery service involving humans and food. The
company provides supply support to its customers by connecting the net stores with their
customers. Domestic E-commerce businesses i.e., Daraz.com.bd; Ajkerdeal.com etc. uses Pathao
fulfillment services to deliver the products brought through their sites on to the client face to
face. The services offered through this vertical of business include: cash-on-delivery (COD);
reverse supply (which could be a come to sender/origin support); 24-hour client service.
Customer’s profit through the value-added convenience of products being delivered to their
home, and businesses profit by not having to borne immense delivery prices and giving
customers an added service. The integrated app uses a mobile-friendly interface that allows users
to access the services on any platform: internet, computer, mobile, and a 24-hour client service
implies that customers will have their issues sorted at any hour of the day.

Pathao Rides is a transport service provided by the business, which is more like a motorcycle and
car taxi, similar to Uber and Go-Jek. It works through the official Pathao app available in both
iOS and Android platforms. Anyone looking for a ride simply logs into the app, selects where
they wish to be picked up from and where they want to be dropped. A map will appear in the app
showing the location of the pick-up and destination point, the estimated time of arrival and the
estimated fair. The interface is user-friendly and the convenience of selecting the exact location
gives an added benefit to the consumer. The rates are extremely competitive and much lower
than autorickshaws, plus it saves passengers a lot of time. Pathao Rides charges a base fare of
Tk. 25 for the first 2 kilometers and Tk. 12 for each kilometer in addition to a charge of 0.5 Tk.
per minute. Even though the rates may seem expensive at a glance, the convenience of faster
travel and Avoidance of traffic makes it worthwhile. The Pathao Rides operations are shared by
Pathao HQ at Gulshan-2, Pathao Chairmanbari office and Pathao Rampura office.

7
The Pathao Food is that the latest addition to Pathao’s growing business verticals. The company
has quickly achieved adding 6000+ restaurants across the capital associated guarantees delivery
in an hour. The company in the main functions by victimization their fleet of freelancing riders
and distributes the food orders equally to the purchasers awaiting food at their homes. Pathao
Food has quickly ready to gain the market share wherever the food delivery market is very
saturated by native and international players like Foodpanda, Hungrynaki and Harriken.
However, because of robust infrastructure and having a robust fleet of freelancers, the food
service is premium and offers delivery times that are lesser than its competitors. Pathao Food is
currently fully running their operations at Dhaka and Chittagong. The next 2 major cities will be
Sylhet and Khulna.

Duties and responsibilities

I was assigned to execute operational activities, verifying the live orders, verifying the fraud
customers and foodman. My major tasks were:
- Prepare the menu of the restaurants that will be shown in the Pathao app.

- To communicate with restaurant’s owners to have their menu, operating hours and know
about the vat and service charge they are taking with the foods price.

- Add offers of the specific restaurant.

- Working with KAM.
- Assign people to go to the field visits to collect the information of restaurants which have
issues with contact number and address.
- Work with the live order team.
- Work with Chittagong Team

15
 Adding Offers: The offers appear in the Pathao app are manually given input from the
Dashboard. When the restaurant comes up with a new offer then we create a different
category for the offer and give details for the offer and make the offer live for that
restaurant.
 Working with KAM: The KAM team is actually the Sales Team of Pathao Food.
KAM (Key Account Management) team to make the restaurants partners. They always
handle the restaurants. Their main work is to have contract with the restaurants. The
offers of the partner restaurants come from the KAM team.
 Field Visit: The Field Visits are one of the difficult and also exciting works. Our
supervisor makes a map on Dhaka and put the restaurants on the map in which we have
to do field visit. The Field Visit is actually happen when we do not have any ways to
make contact with a restaurant. So in the field visit, we physically go to the restaurant and
take proper information. If we don’t find the restaurant in the given address then the
restaurant will be marked as Flagged (closed from the app)
 Work with Team Chittagong: Pathao Food recently doing its operation at CTG so
we have to sync with the CTG team and work together. I also do work with CTG team.
For that sometimes I have to visit CTG office. The access of the Dashboard is not given
to everyone. Only 2 persons have the access of the Dashboard in CTG. So sometimes we
have to go physically in our CTG office to work together with the CTG team.

Some other tasks:

 Communicating with the partner restaurants.
 Prepare a Google sheet report where all the feedback form the restaurants has been
noted.
 Communicate with restaurants regularly.
 Meting new restaurants who are interested to do business and forward their
contacts to the KAM team to make agreements.
 Monitoring the operational flow and solving issues regarding operational conflict.

16
Working Experience with Pathao

Maintain Restaurant’s Account:

To maintain a restaurants account we have to update and do a lot of works. First for a new
restaurant we have to collect their updated menu. After that we give each restaurant a unique ID,
which we call the Parse ID. After giving the restaurant a parse ID we input the restaurant in the
database. We do the Transcription of that menu from the database. After the transcription we
make the account level of that restaurant. In the account level we input Parse ID, Name, Contact
Number, Address, Latitude, Longitude, Logo, Banner, Vat, Service Charge, City and many
more. Here is a restaurant’s account level picture which I have made.

17
After the account level is done we update the Item level with the help of CSV and push it to the
server and the server updates the menu in the Item level in the Dashboard. After that we make
the restaurant visible in the app.

All the account level and the item level are done in the Dashboard. When an existing restaurant
comes up with the updated menu, we update the menu from the Dashboard Directly. We have to
handle the Dashboard very carefully, because if we change something from the Dashboard then
the change will be in the app. Suppose if I make a burger item 10 taka then the app will show the
exact same amount.

18
Working with the Live Order Team

The Live Order Team is a team who are always standby for any order related issue. In this team
we deal with order cancelations, fraud orders, fraud customers and foodman, food not available
issue, restaurant closed issue and many more. In this team we use another backend interface
called Engineroom. In the Engineroom we actually have access to edit the cart, cancel the order,
and confirm the order and more like these. The issue like food not available in the restaurant
appears here. For the issue like this we have to get verify this by calling the restaurant and do
cancel the order. In the Engineroom we can see the history of a customer or a foodman.

The office environment of Pathao is employee friendly. I currently work in the Rampura office. I
did not face the problem to get blend with my coworkers because a lot of NSU graduates are
doing job in Pathao. My line manager Mr. Sirajus Salekin is also an Nsu graduate. One more
plus point I got working in Pathao is 14 employees of Pathao have North South University Art
and Photography Club background, where I was the Treasurer of NSUAPC (2017-2018).
When I joined Pathao the office was in Banani. Then in the beginning of March Pathao food
moved to the Rampura office. The Rampura office is more furnished compared to Banani, but
for me it’s difficult to work in Rampura because I have to do classes as well in NSU. When I was
given the responsibility to get involved with the CTG team my line manager said sometimes I
have to go to CTG for helping the CTG team. I went to CTG for 4 days. All the expenses were
bared by office. Working with the CTG team is more exciting.

19
There are some difficulties working with Pathao when a public occasion appears. All the
restaurants come up with their offers. In the 14th April all the restaurants gave their Boishakhi
offer. In that time we faced a huge workload.

20
Learning from the Internship

 Organizational behavior.
 Organizational culture.
 Current scenario of job market.
 Improve communication skill.
 Dealing high pressure.
 Knowing the present customer market.
 How to plan and what to plan for the future.
 Forecasting power.
 Being more organized.

Difficulties faced in organization

 Cooperate with people.

 Mange yourself in a new place.
 Meeting lot of unknown faces.
 Adapt new culture.
 Understanding Organizational politics.
 Work load before any public occasions.

21
Achievement from the internship

I learn a lot from the organization through my internship. But the greatest achievement from my
internship is Pathao hired me as a junior operation executive base on my performance during my
internship period. I am also helping to develop the CTG team of Pathao Food.

Recommendations
 Improve service system and make it as an express delivery system.
 Knowing customer demand and want in more details.
 Building more strong relationship with customers.
 Do more employee branding as they are the main asset of the organization.
 Give more opportunity for the restaurant to attract them in the new business.
 Educate customer to know more about online business.
 Give the foodmans more training for dealing with the customers and using the app
properly.

22
Conclusion
Pathao is a pipe dream for each youthful business person and the association is genuinely
breaking boundaries by keeping their Moving Bangladesh aphorism alive and solid. The
association has been named as an incredible work environment and exceeds expectations.
Since I am as yet utilized by this regarded association, I would anticipate investigate
openings outside of the promoting group and escape the safe place and give imaginative
thoughts that would positively affect how Pathao's administrations are being rendered. The
#OnePathao vision is concrete and I intend to adhere to this incredible organization and be
the change maker of tomorrow. The future has just started where coordination in Bangladesh
will be re-characterized with ramble innovation and self-governing autos employing in the
city of Dhaka.

In this week I was doing regular menu update for CTG. And come to know that we will have
a team dinner in a fancy restaurant. The full Food team will be there. In Pathao the Team
Dinners are common. Each team goes to a team dinner once in 2 months. That creates
bonding between the teams. Unfortunately in this week fire took place in Banani. In that time
we made all the restaurants in that area invisible from the app till furfure notice.
Tasks Performed This Week
 Updated menus from CTG.
 Showed the CTG team how to use Dashboard properly.
 Went to the Team Dinner.
 Made the Banani area’s restaurants invisible.

Key achievements
 Got praised for the instant decision of which restaurant we will make invisible.

Observations
The instant decisions we make in the job sectors are very crucial.

Notable Incidents
When the Banani Fire occurred the whole office was in panic. Like is there proper safety for
fire in our office.

Description
In this week I got to know that I have to go to CTG for 4 days. All the expenses will be given
by the office. So I was excited for that. When I went to CTG it was not different from Dhaka
office. The office culture is same. I went there to guide them how to work on Dashboard as
only 2 of them got access of Dashboard. And I did regular CTG menu update in the CTG
office. There was a nice hotel room for me arranged by Pathao. It was indeed a great office
trip.

Description
In this week I came back from CTG. It was my day off but my Line Manager Mr. Sirajus
Salekin called and asked me to come to the office. And he handed over me an envelope where
an offer letter from Pathao. Pathao offered me a permanent job. But unfortunately I was not
done with my undergraduation from NSU yet, so I cannot join there for a fulltime employee.
For that they took me as a contractual employee and asked me to get done with my studies.
This week I worked with the Live Order team. Who take care of the issues which are coming
live. In the live order we use the Engine room. Pathao gave the access of Engine Room right
after I came back from CTG.
Tasks Performed This Week
 Got involved with Live Order team.
 Solve issues I got from the live order.

Key achievements
 Pathao offered me a fulltime job.

For a startup Pathao is looking for employees who got abilities to adapt things faster. People in
Pathao always say we don’t look for a good student, we look for a perfect person for a perfect
work.

Notable Incidents
Got a fulltime job offer from Pathao.
