INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions in this section.
Read the two passages below carefully and answer the questions under
them. Shade the answer space in the answer sheet which bears the same
letter as the answer you have chosen.
PASSAGE ONE
ELECTRIC FISH
The idea of a fish being able to generate electricity strong enough to light lamp
bulbs – or even to run a small electric motor – is almost unbelievable, but
several kinds of fish are able to do this. Even more strangely, this curious
power has been acquired in different ways by fish belonging to very different
families.
Perhaps, the best known are the electric rays or torpedoes, of which several
kinds live in warm seas. They possess on each side of the head, behind the
eyes, an organ consisting of small hexagonal shaped cells rather like a honey-
comb. The cells are filled with a jelly-like substance, and contain a series of flat
electric plates. One side, the negative side, of each plate is supplied with very
fine nerves, connected with a main nerve coming from a special part of the
brain. Current passes from the upper, positive side of the organ downwards to
the negative, lower side. Generally, it is necessary to touch the fish in two
places, completing the circuit, in order to receive a shock.
The strength of this shock depends on the size of the fish, but newly-born ones,
only about five centimeters across, can be made to light the bulb of a pocket
flash-light for a few moments, while a fully grown torpedo gives a shock
capable of knocking a man down, and, if suitable wires are connected, will
operate a small electric motor for several minutes.
Another famous example is the electric eel. This fish gives an even more
powerful shock. The system is different from that of the torpedo in that the
electric plates run longitudinally and are supplied with nerves from the spinal
cord. Consequently, the current passes along the fish from head to tail. The
electric organs of these fish are really altered muscles and, like all muscles, are
apt to tire. So, they are not able to produce electricity for very long. People in
some parts of South America, who value the electric eel as food, take
advantage of this fact by driving horses into the water against which the fish
discharge their electricity. The horses are less affected than a man would be,
and when the electric eels have exhausted themselves, they can be caught
without danger.
The electric catfish of the Nile and other African fresh waters has a different
system by which current passes over the whole body from the tail to the head.
The shock given by this arrangement is not so strong as the other two, but is
nonetheless unpleasant. The electric catfish is a slow, lazy fish, fond of gloomy
places and grows about one metre long; it is eaten by the Arabs in some areas.

The power of producing electricity may serve these fish both for defence and
attack. If a large enemy attacks, the shock will drive it away; but it appears that
the catfish and the electric eel use their current most often against smaller fish,
stunning them so that they can easily be overpowered.

PASSAGE TWO
THE DOG
The dog is a domestic animal whose usefulness is rarely appreciated by man. It
is not an ordinary animal. The dog is very loyal to man. No matter the situation,
the dog remains faithful to man. The popular saying in a marriage ceremony
“for better, for worse” is more applicable to the relationship between the dog
and man - for the dog is ever ready to stand by man in all circumstances. It is
unlike man who can desert his friend when the situation is unfavourable.
It is used by man to hunt other animals. Hunters usually rely on the ability of
the dog to track down other animals. It does not consider the fact that it is in
the same category with other animals. It often endangers its life as it
ferociously attacks these other animals. It then provides the meat which man
eats with relish.
It is always used to fight against criminals. The police train the dog to become a
detective. With this training, it is able to sniff out where robbers are. Such
robbers are then arrested by the police.

 During wars, the dog is also used to the advantage of the army. Highly trained
dogs are used as spies. They are sent ahead of the army to spy where the
enemies are hiding. Interesting enough, these dogs report back to man.
At home, the dog is used as a guard. It is used to keep watch over man’s house.
It is usually kept outside at night. As soon as it notices any strange figure, it
starts barking. If the strange figure dares come near the house, it will bring him
or her down. Sometimes, it is killed in the process of defending the home.
Many of us are not aware that the dog can be used as a means of
transportation. This is however not done everywhere in the world. It is so used
in the very cold regions of the world. The dog has proved quite useful in
carrying loads as it works on ice. Many other animals cannot do this.
We can now see how valuable the dog is to man.
