Annexure-I

Project summary
1. Title: Evaluating Ethanol as a vehicle fuel and analysing it as a future fuel resource in India.

2. Background: Integrated and energy efficient process for value addition of natural resources.

3. Objectives: To promote the use of alternative and environment friendly fuels.

4. Methodology: Vacuum distillation followed by catalytic cracking, thermal cracking processes,

utility boilers, compressor engines, blowdown system and finally sulphur recovery.

5. Main Findings:

1. Ethanol is better alternative source for vehicle fuel.

2. Brazil has the world’s largest bioethanol programme.

3. Brazil has produced over 90 billion litres of ethanol from sugarcane.

4. The costs of ethanol production can be further lowered if sugarcane residues mainly

Bagasse were to be fully used.

6. Conclusion: Ethanol blended petrol and diesel have enormous growth potential in India for use as
fuels in transport sector. It provides cleaner and greener environment. It can reduce import
dependency for energy requirements.

7. Future Perspective: To increase the ethanol as vehicle fuel.
