5 Paragraph Essay

Of Mice and Man, by John Steinbeck, is a story about people’s loneliness of

the people who work in ranches. The story takes place in Soledad, California, during

the time of the Great Depression. The main character is Lennie and George. Lennie is

mentally retarded person who George has to take care of since his aunt, Clara died.

They traveled together for work, so they can have enough money to build their own

farm. As the story develops, there are several characters that are lonely.

George and Lennie have no one except for themselves. The two man travel

together to find work so they don’t have so much friends. As they travel George

always tell Lennie that “Guys like us that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in

the world. They got no family…” (13). When they arrive at the ranch, meet some

new people; Candy, Curley, Slim, Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Carlson. As they get to

meet the people, they learn more about each character.

The first lonely guy they get to meet is Candy, which has his right hand cut

off, and no friends except for his dog. He had his dog for a very long time since the

dog was a puppy. “Well –hell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup.I

herded sheep with him.”(44) Until one day, his dog got killed by Carlson because it

was smelly and really old. First, Candy didn’t let Carlson kill the dog. But Carlson

said he was old and not enjoying life so it’s better to kill him and let him be happy in

heaven.
The second lonely person Lennie gets to meet is Crooks. When Lennie goes in

the barn to see his pup, and see the light in Crook’s room. So he walks into Crook’s

room, Crook tells him to leave because he is not allowed in the ranch, so why should

Lennie be allowed in his room. After Lennie keeps trying to go into the room, Crooks

get annoyed and lets him in. Crooks starts to tell him that everybody needs a friend

and Candy comes in and talk about the farm. He says, “A guy goes nuts if if he ain’t

got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he’s with you. I tell

ya.”(72-73) So Crooks wants in on the farm.

The last lonely person is Curley’s wife. Curley’s wife wants to talk with the

men at the ranch because she is lonely at the house. She says that Curley doesn’t talk

to her that much, and whenever he talks to her he only talks about fighting. One day,

Curley’s wife comes to Lennie who was in the barn alone. Lennie at first doesn’t want

to talk to her, but she keeps on talking to Lennie because she wanted someone to talk

to. She says, “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful

lonely.”(86) She mentions that she is lonely and that she wants someone to talk to.

In the story Of Mice and Men, the author develops the theme about that

everyone needs someone to talk to when they are lonely through the characters.

George and Lennie have each other to talk so they are not lonely. Crooks who is a

black man also feels lonely because his dog died. Also, Curley’s wife feel lonely

because nobody talks to him and only thing Curley talks about is fighting.
