THE INVENTION OF SHOES

- Rabindranath Tagore

I. Answer the following.

1. What was King Hobu worried about?

Ans. King Hobu was worried about his royal feet getting dirty. This worried him
so much as he stayed up all night thinking about a remedy for the problem.

2. What is the difference between the solution given by the tanner

and the others in the King’s court? Can we learn anything about it?

Ans. The old and wise tanner gave a simple remedy of covering the King’s feet
with shoes to prevent it from getting dirty whereas the ministers and the other
learned men complicated the issue with irrelevant ideas. This explains the fact
that life is simple and the problems in our life would find a remedy only if we
don’t complicate them too much. It also teaches us that more than education
common sense and presence of mind help us to face the challenges of life.

II. Explain with reference to the given context.

it.”

a. Who said these words to whom?

Ans. King Hobu said these words to his ministers and courtiers who had
ordered innumerable brooms to clean the kingdom which ended in mounding it
up with dust.

b. Did they really fill up the world with dust?

Ans. No, they did not fill up the world with dust yet the author uses such terms
to picturize the intensity of the scene to the readers.
2. “The royal feet were saved. So was Gobu. And so was the earth.”

Ans. King Hobu’s feet are referred to in the above extract.
