Historical/ Origin and development of volleyball.

Volleyball was originated by Mr. William G. Morgan, Physical director of YMCA in Holyoke City,
Massachusetts, USA, in the year 1895. It was just one year before the modern Olympic was held in Athens. At
that time, this game was called “ MINNONETTE” until it was called Volleyball as in the present days. It is based
on the idea that a ball is played in volley across the net.

It was in 1900 in India that volleyball was initially introduced to Asia. In 1910, it was introduced to
the Philippines by Mr. E. S. Brown, Physical Director of YMCA. With his idea and effort, the volleyball was
developed particularly in the Far East.

Volleyball is one of the major sports existing in the Philippines today. There is no denying the fact
that the Philippines has coped the game of a Volleyball country. For indeed, this is so. People in this country
are so interested that in every fiesta celebration Volleyball becomes one of the entertainments.

Volleyball offers opportunities for the development of strength, endurance, agility, speed and
muscular skills and coordination on the part of the participants. This is quite obvious since the game requires
action. The fundamentals require physical action as well as mental coordination.

Today, more than ever, Volleyball plays a very important role in the curriculum of the schools. The
sport is not so expensive and is very practical. Anyone with adequate space can have a volleyball court and
would not have to regret to have one, since this sport provides joy and satisfaction.

These are the three educational objectives of Volleyball:

1. To develop honesty and fair play
2. To develop sportsmanship and emotional control
3. To develop social adjustment and team play through cooperation

With these objectives in mind, the school should aim to provide opportunities for the development of skills
and interest in recreational activities which will be carried over for re creative life after school days are over. It
is very important to learn a sport activity when one is young.

Nature of the game

. Volleyball is played on a court divided into two equal halves by a net. There are two types of volleyball game,
the Far Eastern and the International. The former is played less now and so we will deal with the second.

. The objective of the game is to keep the ball from striking the floor and to return it to the opposite side so it
strikes the floor or courses the opponent to commit a fault. In International rules, six players compose a team.

. The ball is put into play from behind the rear boundary line( baseline ) by the right back player who bats the
ball across the net into the opponent’s court. The ball is batted back and forth until one team fails to return it.
If the serving team makes the error, they lose the serve. An error made by the receiving team gives one point
to the server. The serve strikes the ball over the net using no more than the hits. The pattern of three hits is
basic to the game. This exchange is called the rally and continues until a team commits a fault. When a team
wins the serve, all of its player rotate one position clockwise in order to bring a new serve, all of its player
rotate one position clockwise in order o bring a new serve to the right rear corner. A game is completed play
until a team score 25 points. A tie score at 24 -24 calls for additional play until one team succeed in gaining a
two – point lead like 26 – 24 or 27 -25. A math usually consists of two out of three game series.
