ENGC 1201 Course Syllabus/ Sem. I, 2020-2021

1) Course Description:

English 1201 and 1202:Two-credit hour courses that integrate the four skills;
listening, speaking, reading and writing that help students do the following: understand
sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance
(basic personal and family information, local geography, employment); communicate in
simple and routine tasks requiring simple and direct exchange of information on familiar
and routine matters; describe background, immediate environment, interests or activities;
use simple structures accurately.
*Pre-requisite for ENGC1201: Assessment test (A2 score) or ENGC1002
*Pre-requisite for ENGC1202:ENGC1201

2) Course Objectives:

Upon the end of this course, students are expected to achieve the following
objectives/goals in relation to the four language skills:

 Reading:
 Preview texts for better understanding.
 Skim texts to find the main ideas.
 Scan texts to find certain details.
 Make inferences depending on text reading.
 Listening
 Watch and understand videos on specific topics.
 Predict content using visuals.
 Listen in order to distinguish facts and opinions.
 Listen in order to find out the main idea.
 Listen and take notes.
 Listen for details and additional information.
 Listen for reasons, genre and instructions.
 Writing
 Use capital letters and full stops correctly.

 Identify and write a topic sentence.
 Identify and write supporting sentences.
 Organize sentences into a paragraph.
 Write a paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting
sentences and a concluding sentence.
 Write descriptive sentences.
 Write a descriptive paragraph.
 Write a one-sided opinion paragraph.

 Speaking
 Organize information for a presentation.
 Give presentations with different types.
 Make suggestions.
 Offer opinions, agree and disagree.
 Hold debates on certain topics.
 Describe additional and contrasting information.
 Present reports.
 Sequence instructions.
 Plan and give a set of instructions.

5) Course Policy

The following course policies and expectations apply to all parts of ENGC 1001:

Students are expected to:

1. attend all classes except in case of illness or emergency.

2. prepare for class by completing readings and assigned work in advance.

3. actively participate in classroom activities.

4. ask questions if they do not understand.

5. submit all assignments according to instructions, complete, and on time.

6. use instructor comments and feedback to improve future work.

7. cooperate with and act respectfully toward other students and the instructor.

8. communicate with the instructor about problems or concerns as soon as possible.

9. put focused and disciplined effort into the course assignments.

6) Attendance

Regular attendance is mandatory in all classes. Students who miss more than one-third of
classes may receive FA. If you miss a class, it is your duty to find out what you have
missed and what you need to make .Also, in case of interruption of classes, you are
expected to continue studying according to the course outline.

Important Note:

 Students are requested to do all the required activities and tasks of


the ONLINE workbooks because they are included in all quizzes and tests.
 Students must create reading and listening accounts in both online books.

7) Grade Distribution (The pass mark for the course is 60%)

Mid-term (Via ITC) 25 It should cover two units: 1 RW and 1 LS (LD part
of the covered LS unit). No writing is included.

In-class writing assignment 10 At least one.


Final exam-RW & LS (ML 40 (Possibly in-person or f2f)
or EOL) It should cover the following:
1.   LS quiz: 10%
2.   RW and LD of LS: 20%
3.   The writing component (Its weight should be 10%).
