Projectile Motion

Objectives :
1. To determine the relationship of range and initial velocity of the marble.
2. To determine the acceleration due to gravity of an object in a projectile motion.
Materials :
Meter stick (other options are ruler, tape measure or meter used by carpenters), timer, marble
PROCEDURES:
1. Measure the height of the table (H) from the floor.
2. Flick the marble on top of the table so it will fall in a projectile motion.
3. Using the meter stick, measure the range (R) in meters.
4. Using the timer, take the time of flight of the marble to reach the floor.
5. Using the equation for range, calculate the initial velocity of the marble.
R = V ox t

6. Make 4 trials of different flicking force.

7. Using the data from table I for time ( t) , calculate the acceleration due to gravity of the marble
using the equation :
g= 2H/t2 (experimental value)

8. Compare the value of the experimental g with the standard value of 9.8 m/s2.
9. Calculate the % error of the acceleration.
10. You can provide extra page if possible.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

Table I. Initial velocity of the marble:

Trial R ( m) t ( sec ) Vox ( m/ s )

1
2
3 0.9652 0.41 2.3541

Table II. Acceleration due to gravity of the marble : H = 0.7112m

Trial t ( sec ) gexperimental ( m/ s2 ) % error ( g )

2
3 0.41 8.4616 13.66

Sample Computations :

R 2(0.7112)
V ox = g=
t (0.41)2

0.9652
V ox = g=8.4616 m/s2
0.41

V ox =2.3541 m/s
