Coal is formed from giant plants that died in swamps millions of years ago and were buried under water and dirt. Petroleum and natural gas formed from tiny sea plants and animals that died and were buried on the ocean floor, becoming trapped under layers of sediment over millions of years of heat and pressure underground. Today we drill through rock layers to access remaining fossil fuel deposits of coal, oil and gas.
