What is the difference between an evaluation and an analysis? What
works can we do a critical review on?

2
TOPIC: Evaluating Texts in Terms of Accuracy, Validity, Adequacy and
Relevance

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

When listening to news reports and speeches, it is important to use critical

listening for one not to be gullible or easily fooled by what a speaker says. News reports
can be biased or may contain false information. Speeches, on the other hand, can be
persuasive; hence there is a need to evaluate authentic listening texts (news reports,
speeches).

Consider the following criteria and guide questions in evaluating listening texts:

• Authority: Who is the author and what are his or her qualifications? Who is the
publisher and what is the purpose of the site?
• Verifiability: Are sources provided?
• Timeliness: Is the information current? When was it posted and/or last updated?
• Relevance: Does the material contain unsubstantiated generalizations?
• Bias: Is the language emotional or inflammatory? Does the information represent a
single opinion or a range of opinions?
• Orderliness: Is the page arranged in an order that makes sense? Are underlying
assumptions identifiable? Is the information consistent?
• Clarity: Is the information clearly stated? Does the author define important terms?
• Validity: Do the facts presented support the conclusions?

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday belied a post circulating
online and bearing its official logo supposedly announcing the distribution of P3,000 cash assistance
or P3,5000 worth of agricultural products to farmers.

“Ang katotohanan, magbibigay kami ng certified seeds, of course, again sa rice at dalawang sako ng
urea [fertilizer],” he added.

Apart from distributing these, Dar said the agency will also conduct training to help farmers increase
their productivity.
Earlier, DA launched a Financial Subsidy to Rice Farmers (FSRF) to assist small farmers amid the

Under the said program, over 600,000 small rice farmers who plant one hectare or less will receive
a P5,000 financial subsidy.
