Abstract

Gender analysis in the movie Queen of Katwe directed by Mira Nair aims to describe
the characterizations and forms of gender differences of characters in the movie Queen of
Katwee written by William Wheeler. This research is expected to add insight into the study of
gender theory which is still a major issue for the world community. This study uses this
analytical method based on gender theory to explain that the theory is contained in this
movie. The object of the research is the Queen of Katwe movie produced by Walt Disney
Pictures. The movie aired in 2016 with a duration of 2 hours, 4 minutes, 32 seconds. Data
collection in this study was done by reading gender theories from several internet sites and
watching. From the results of observations of researchers, it is known that there are several
figures who clearly show the study of gender theory.

Keywords: gender theory, movie, character.

Gender is a theoretical term introduced by social scientists to explain the differences

in women and men who are innate as God's creations and cultural forms that are learned and
socialized since childhood. The word "gender" can be interpreted as the difference in the
roles, functions, status and responsibilities of men and women as a result of the socio-cultural
formation that is embedded through the process of socialization from one generation to the
next. Thus gender is the result of agreement between humans that is not natural. Therefore
gender varies from place to place and from one time to the next. Gender is not natural, it can
change and can be exchanged between humans one to another depending on time and local
culture.
In various literature and opinions of the term gender, there are many definitions that
can be learned for many people, especially those who do not understand the term gender
itself. These are gender theory definitions:
1. The terms gender and sex have differences in terms of dimensions. The term sex (sex)
refers to the biological dimension of a man and woman, while gender refers to the socio-
cultural dimension of a man and woman (Santrock, 2003: 365).

2. “Gender theory is a social constructionist perspective that simultaneously examines the

ideological and the material levels of analysis” (Smith 1987 in Lloyd et al. 2009: p.8).

1|Analysis Gender Theory of Movie Queen Of Katwe.

3. “Gender is not a noun- a „being‟–but a „doing‟. Gender is created and reinforced
discursively, through talk and behavior, where individuals claim a gender identity and
reveal it to others” (West & Zimmerman 1987 in Lloyd et al. 2009: p.8).

4. “Gender should be conceptualized as a set of relations, existing in social institutions and

reproduced in interpersonal interaction“ (Smith 1987; West & Zimmerman 1987 in
Lloyd et al. 2009: p.8).

5. “Gender is not a property of individuals but an ongoing interaction between actors and
structures with tremendous variation across men‟s and women‟s lives “individually
over the life course and structurally in the historical context of race and class” (Ferree
1990 dalam Lloyd et al. 2009: p.8).

Thus through various definitions above the term gender has a very important
relationship to the social rules relating to the sex of men and women who have never changed
and are valid all the time.
Based on gender theory we will analyze films related to the theory. The goal is that
many people can realize that films are made not only to be shown but can be a learning for
every behavior in everyday life, especially gender-related studies. The queen of us is the film
we chose to analyze.
Queen Of Katwe is a film released on 10 September 2016 in Canada, airing limitedly
on 23 September 2016 in the United States and airing publicly on 30 September 2016 in
various countries. Appointed from a book by Tim Crothers, "Queen of Katwe" tells of a girl
from a slum in Uganda who tries to become a world chess champion. This film is categorized
into three categories, namely Drama, Biography and Sport.
The story begins with a poor little family in Katwe, Uganda. A hard-working mother,
Harriet Mutesi works day and night selling vegetables and corn to support her children, and
ensures they have a place to live. One of her children, Phiona Mutesi was derived from
intelligence, and the unyielding spirit of her mother. She also continued to help Harriet
Mutesi to sell corn on the market without getting proper education.
On the other hand, there is a former football player Robert Katende who is determined
to change the lives of young people in Katwe, Uganda. One way: with chess. Chess is
considered by Robert Katende to be able to provide many lessons. Starting from the ability to

fight, to practical thinking to take risks. The lessons he considers will be very useful in life
every day.
One day, Phiona Matesi accidentally came to Robert Katende's place (like a class). A
brief meeting made Phiona feel interested in chess. She immediately tried to play and
unexpectedly: won! The victory that immediately attracted the attention of Robert Katende
and intends to become a coach for the poor teenage girl from Katwe. Robert then not only
taught Phiona to play chess, however
also taught her to read and write to get a scholarship later. Unfortunately, the spirit of Phiona
and Katende did not get support from her mother, Harriet, who was afraid that Phiona would
become disappointed and fail.
But Phiona and Katende proved they did not fight to fail. On the contrary, victory
after victory was obtained by Phiona with guidance from Katende. Until bringing them to the
world champion class. Seeing the potential of Phiona, Herriot finally supported Katende to
bring Phiona to be the champion in the chess world. A world champion who will not only
change their family, but will also change Katwe, and the country of Uganda.
That's a brief synopsis of the movie Queen Of Katwe, a movie that not only inspires
many people, from parents to young people, but also gives us a little information about
gender theory. We will attach the following figures that were introduced at the end of this
movie's story.

Lupita Nyong’o as Nakku Harriet Madina Nalwanga as Phiona Mutesi

David Oyelowo as Robert Katende Esther Tebandeke asa Sarah Katende

Every character that has been attached has a different character and existence. This
movie that was born from a true story is an encouragement for many people. We attach
figures with the aim of proving the story of this movie is not a story made of melinkan born
from a story that is truly real and really happened in human life. The film won many awards,
approximately 10 nominations have been won.

A little information about gender discussions and the movie Queen of Katwe. We will
then give a discussion about this relationship with gender theory.

Gender inequality acknowledges that men and women are not equal and that gender
affects an individual's lived experience. These differences arise from distinctions in biology,
psychology, and cultural norms. Some of these distinctions are empirically grounded while
others appear to be socially constructed. Studies show the different lived experience of

genders across many domains including education, life expectancy, personality, interests,
family life, careers, and political affiliations. Gender inequality is experienced differently
across cultures.
In this movie, we find several gender inequalities :
a. Double Burden
Another form of gender inequality is a double burden that must be carried out by one
particular sex. In a household in general some types of activities are carried out by men,
and some are done by women. Various observations show that women work almost 90%
of work in the household. So that for those who work, in addition to working in the
workplace also still have to do housework. They also make a living as a source of
additional family livelihood, this makes women have to work extra to work on both of
their burdens.
In this movie we can see that Phiona's mother (Ms. Harrieth) worked as the backbone
of the family. Not only being a housewife, her mother also does other works such as
selling on the market. His mother had to work hard because Phiona's father had died.
Phiona and her sister, Night, also have to work hard to help her mother get money.

We also see that Sara (Mr. Katende’s wife) also works hard to help her family's
income by working as a teacher.

b. Violence
Violence is a form of physical and non-physical violence carried out by one sex,
family, community, country to another sex. Various forms of violence against women as a
result of differences appear in various forms. For example, rape, sexual violence, sexual
abuse, beatings, humiliation, sexual exploitation of women etc.

In this movie, there is a part where Phiona was insulted by a boy when she wanted to
play chess. The boy said that Phiona had to leave because she was very smelly.

There is also a part where Phiona's mother was sexually abused by Mr. Tendo, a man
who sells clothes. At that time she came to meet Tendo because she wanted to sell the
clothes she had so she could get money, but Mr. Tendo acted impertinent and touched her.

c. Gender Inequality in Education

In this movie, we can see that Phiona, her brother, Bryan, and other children living in
Katwee have difficulty getting a good education. Poor economic conditions make Phiona
unable to go to school. The government also seems to pay little attention to economic and
social conditions in Katwee. Unlike children who live in other cities, they can get
education very well, the government also treats them very special. There was a part where
the government did not allow Phiona and the children from Katwee to take part in the
chess competition because they didn’t attend school.

d. Gender Equality in Education
At the end of this film, Phiona and her brother can get a good education. Mr. Katende
(the coach) helped them so they could enter a school. He had tried so hard that Phiona
could take part in the chess competition and win, become a champion and make Uganda
famous. Not only that, other children can also get a good education. Because of the
achievements they made through chess competitions, the government was proud and
began to pay attention to them. Give them good education and decent facilities.

So, there are some conclusions that can be taken from this discussion:

1. Gender is a part of human life that will never run out.

2. Queen Of Katwe is a movie that is screened to provide good inspirational and
motivational knowledge.
3. In the movie Queen Of Katwe gender theory is divided into several parts, namely:
double burden, violence, and gender in quality in Education. These three parts are
stories of situations that are experienced and felt by families that are similar to real
life.
