CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) was a
noteworthy author of the nineteenth
century. His novels were appreciated not
only for their plots and interesting
characters, but also because they
provided a commentary on the terrible
conditions in which young children
worked in factories.
BACKGROUND

The Shoemaker is an extract from the famous

novel ’A Tale of Two Cities’. The novel tells the
story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-
long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris and his
release to live in London with his daughter Lucie,
whom he had never met. The story is set against
the conditions that led up to the French Revolution
and the Reign of Terror.
Here’s something about French Revolution…

The French Revolution lasted 10 years. It began in 1789 when

revolutionaries stormed a prison called the Bastille.
The revolution came to an end in 1799 when a general named
Napoleon overthrew the government and established
the French Consulate (with Napoleon as leader).
CENTRAL IDEA

of an imprisoned shoemaker who had lost his battle
with time. Having been imprisoned for a very long
time, Dr. Manette has lost almost all of his memory.
When he finally meets his daughter, he is taken aback
by surprise.

Dr. Alexandre Manette

Dr. Manette is an accomplished French physician who gets

imprisoned in the Bastille, and loses his mind. His madness
highlights the terrible psychological trauma due to ill-
treatment, cruelty and oppression by the government. Dr.
Manette is eventually saved from his madness by the love of
his daughter, Lucie.
As shown in the story, he looks weak, withered and pale for
being in prison for 18 years. He has been utterly neglected
there which is evident from his ragged clothes and
extremely thin appearance.
Lucie Manette

Lucie is the daughter of Dr. Manette. With her qualities of

innocence, devotion, and abiding love, Lucie has the
power to save or recall her father back to life, after his long
imprisonment. When she goes to prison to meet her father,
she is soft and gentle towards him.
By showing her love and care for her father, she is finally
able to bring him out of his trauma. Lucie depicts
goodness against the forces of cruelty and dirty politics.
Q. After meeting her father in prison, Lucie is deeply
saddened and pained to see her father’s condition. She
decides to do her best to revive her father once he comes
home from prison.
