A Close Reading Analysis of the poem “Song of the River Fool”

By Jim Pascual Agustin

Jim Pascual Agustin’s poem “Song of the River Fool” explores the man in the state of
loneliness, confusion and sorrow who found himself consciously talking to the river through the
structure of a free verse poem which follows no specific structure. This poem is composed of 4
stanzas that contains 4 lines each also known as a quatrain and the 5th stanza just only having
two lines or is known as a couplet .It also has a rhythmic structure of AABB CECD AEEF FD
.The poem begins with a quotation “so I told my troubles to the river” .Perhaps he has no one to
talk to his problems about but instead who talked to the river which is lifeless and as a result the
river brings more problems and trouble to him.

In the second stanza, the persona was not necessarily outsmarted but his words was
just left out and the river did not give any of the attention nor reaction the persona was hoping
for. It didn’t give its feedback despite of the persona talking to the river, so it gave the persona
the thought that it didn’t need him that informs the rest of the poem of the pointlessness of
talking to the river.

In the third stanza, the speaker described what’s the behavior of river supported by the
phrase “It had drag its own weight through the mountains” which means it’s independent ,alone
and he cites that it would take everything what it could ,to keep moving forward . Not caring
whether someone is facing it head on that it would just crush it.

In the fourth Stanza, the speaker answered his own question which was “So why tell my
troubles to the river?” and answered with sorrow through the line “Couldn’t help it, I was lost in
its song.” That represents that the speaker is not mentally ill but mesmerized and confused. It is
also supported by the phrase Trouble was the river just flowed on because it always has the
capacity to move forward and not respond to him in any way.
In the last stanza, He rants about maybe he should throw himself in, hoping that the river
will talk balk at him and help solve his troubles. But instead the river just kept flowing not caring
about him.

What the poem really talks about is the speaker is not necessarily a fool but was
mesmerized to talk about something he just had on his own and share it. It describes the
importance of being there for someone in times when they are down in the dumps.
Consequently, the message that it delivers is sometimes listening and understanding is a better
remedy to make someone feel better about themselves.
