LESSON PLAN

CLASS: VIII B TIME: 40 MIN

SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY

TOPIC: CHEMICAL EFFECTS OF ELECTRIC CURRENT

SUB-TOPIC: LIQUIDS CONDUCT ELECTRICITY

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

 To promote understanding of basic principles in Chemistry while retaining the

excitement in Chemistry.
 To develop positive scientific attitude, and appreciate contribution of Chemistry
towards the improvement of quality of human life.
 To develop problem solving skills and nurture curiosity in students.
 To inculcate values of honesty, integrity, cooperation, concern for life and
preservation of the environment.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to

 Recall solids as conductors and insulators.

 Classify liquids as good conductors and poor conductors.
 Experiment with different liquids to test their conductivity.
 Explain that the passage of electric current through conducting solutions causes
chemical reactions.
 Define the terms electrodes, cathode, and anode.
 Draw and setup electric circuit for testing conductivity of various liquids.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Students are already familiar with metals as good conductors of
electricity, materials like rubber,non-metals,plastic and wood do not conduct electricity, making
tester, components of a tester

TEACHING AIDS: Laboratory resources like copper wires, battery ,iron nails, carbon rods,
bulb, liquids liked water, acetic acid, honey, hydrochloric acid ,copper sulphate solution.

INTRODUCTION:

Teacher: Sometimes, we get electric shock during rainy season while switching on or off
electrical appliances what could be the reason?

Students: Water conducts electricity.

Teacher: What are conductors?

Students: Materials which allow electric current to pass through them student metals like copper,
aluminium.

Teacher: Give some examples of insulators.

Students: Rubber,plastic,non-metals, wood.

Teacher: Do liquids also conduct electricity?

Students: Yes, like water.

Teacher: Yes, liquids also conduct electricity and show chemical reactions when electric current
passes through them

PRESENTATION:

Activity 1:

Students are divided into four groups. Each group will do an electrical conductivity test of two
solutions in which one of the solution is conducting and other one is non conducting.

Each group is provided with a tester.

Students are asked to check the conductivity of two liquids by dipping the two free ends of the
tester and then fill up the observation sheet given to them.

Solutions given to

Group 1: Copper sulphate solution & Honey

Group 2 : HCl solution & oil

Group 3: Acetic acid solution & sugar solution

Group 4: Tap water & lemon juice

Students come up with the following observations:

Teacher what conclusion can be derived from the above activity?

Students: Some chemical solutions conduct electricity while others don't.

Teacher: Liquids that conduct electricity are called electrolyte and passage of electric current
through them causes chemical reaction.

Activity 2: Students are asked to draw the diagram of the setup of circuits so that they can label
and identify the terms like electrodes-cathode ,anode and electrolyte and other components of the
circuit.

Post activity discussion:

Electrode is a conductor that passes an electric current from one medium to another. Electrodes
come in pairs. Cathode is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. Anode is connected
to the positive terminal of the battery.

RECAPITULATION:

 What are the components of a tester?

 What is an electrolyte?
 Define electrodes.
 What is cathode and anode?
 How conductivity of liquid is different from solids?
 Which of the following liquids will conduct electricity: Alcohol, distilled water, salt
solution

HOME ASSIGNMENTS:

 Construct a tester using compass in place of bulb.

VALUES: Scientific temper, sharing information, working in group.

SKILLS DEVELOPED: Thinking skills, observation skills, experimental skill.

BLACK-BOARD WORK:
