1. Do the equations x + 3y−1 = 3 and 2x + 6y = 6 represent a pair of coincident lines? Justify your
answer. 1

2. Which of the following pairs of linear equation are consistent/inconsistent? 2

If consistent, obtain the solution graphically.
x  y  8; 3x  3y  16
3. Find the roots of the following quadratic equation by factorization: 2
2x2 + x − 6 = 0
4. Solve the following pairs of linear equation by the substitution method. 3

square: 2x2 + x −4 = 0 3

5. The sum of the reciprocals of Rehman’s ages, (in years) 3 yr ago and 5 yr from now is 3 . Find his
present age. 3
6. Form the pair of linear equation in the following problems and find their solutions (if they exist) by
any algebraic method. 4
Yash scored 40 marks in a test, getting 3 marks for each right answer and losing 1 mark been
awarded for each correct answer and 2 marks been deducted for each incorrect answer, then Yash
would have scored 50 marks. How many questions were there in the test?

7. Solve the following pairs of equations by reducing them to a pair of linear equations. 4

8. Formulate the following problems as a pair of equations and hence find their solutions. 4
2 women and 5 men can together finish an embroidery work in 4 days, while 3 women and 6 men
can finish in 3 days. Find the time taken by one woman alone to finish the work and also that taken
by one man alone.

9. An express train takes 1 h less than a passenger train to travel 132 km between Mysore and
Bengaluru (without taking into consideration the time, they stop at intermediate stations.) If the
average speed of the express train is 11 km/h more than that of the passenger train, then find the
average speed of the two trains.
