What are the advantages and disadvantages of cruise holidays? Would you
like to work on a cruise ship? What job would you like to have?
Cruising doesn’t appeal to everyone. For some, it’s the opposite of travel. For others, it’s the
perfect vacation.
I met people who seemed to be having a great time on cruise. Most of them are veterans of
many cruises. I also met lots of budget-conscious travelers who told me that a cruise (which
includes transportation, lodging and food for one discounted price) is a wonderful value.
The basic daily cost of mainstream cruise ships is much better than independent travel. For a
one-week European cruise, a couple pays only €100 per person per night, which is lower than
most hotel rooms in London or Paris. To link all the places on your own: hotels, rail passes,
boat tickets, taxi rides, restaurants and so on. And you can’t beat the convenience and
efficiency of sleeping while you travel to your next destination. Likewise, you can see more
destinations. Traveling by boat is like a road trip that goes to multiple destinations, but you
don’t have to keep packing and unpacking all the way. You only need to pack twice to cruise:
once at home, and once when you disembark. Instead of staying in different hotel rooms every
night, you have a carry-on suitcase and move with it. Seven-day tours usually reach three or
four destinations. Another advantage is that you have a variety of dining options. Despite the
fact that there are always more restaurants on the shore, it depends on type of vacation that
you chose. An all-inclusive resort is limiting your options or, trying new dishes every night in
various restaurants in the city may prove costly. Today, large cruise ships often have many
venues on their ships, many of which are free, and many more venues that require a small fee.
You can find Italian, Asian, Mexican, French, Chinese and even good old American food –
chances are there will be a very large variety of cuisines available to you on your cruise.
On this type of holiday, people have mixed feelings about the type of payment. It’s nice that
you don’t have to carry any money or credit cards around for incidentals like drinks. You just
use your room key for that. But this comes with a downside: you have to be extra careful
because a little money here and there can quickly add up.
There are some negative effects. It is undeniable that the cruise industry will cause water, air
and marine-noise pollution, but technology and consumer pressure are helping. Lack of
connectivity is another issue. The Internet on cruise ships is slow and expensive. When you
are at sea, depending on the carrier, you may or may not get cell service. It may be difficult to
keep in touch, but if you are on vacation, it may be a good idea to disconnect and enjoy this
experience. Cabins on a cruise ship are small, so you won’t have a big room to sleep in. There
is also the small probability of a virus outbreak to happen. Something like a norovirus can
spread quickly whenever there are a lot of people in a small space. Another downfall to being
on a cruise instead of traveling on your own time is that there just isn’t a whole lot of time in
port. Many times, a ship can only stay at any given port for 10 hours, which means that you
may not be able to perform too many activities by that time. Or, if you’re just having a
relaxing beach day, last call to get back onto the ship will seem to come all too soon. One
way to solve this problem is to find a route that includes overnight stay in the port, which is
very exciting, because then you can also experience the nightlife in the port.
What about the impact on the local economy and communities? A cruise may cause tourists to
step on the town, and the tourists hardly leave money (because they eat on the boat, sleep and
buy tours). On the other hand, most people in these communities view cruise ships as an
economic boost, which explains why so many ports invest in terminals and terminals with
cruise ship value.
Then there are issues of economic justice. Critics point out that the industry is built on rich
tourists being served by crew members from poor countries. But I’ve talked to a friend of
mine who used to work on cruise ships, and he has told me that the income they earn on a ship
is far more than any employment prospects they have back home. And the remarkable loyalty
of numerous crew members (working many, many years for the same cruise line) says a lot
about this working arrangement.
This type of travel is also diverse. Cruising can accommodate a family and their different
travel philosophy. Maybe the mother wants to go to the museum, the father to lie by the pool,
the brother to go snorkeling, the sister to go shopping, the grandparents to watch a show and
then they could all have dinner together and exchange stories about their day. Since everyone
on the boat is sharing the boat during the voyage, you have a good chance to meet some new
friends. Whether you are a couple having dinner with you, a family chatting by the pool, or a
guest near the bar, if you want to find friends on the cruise, you can almost always find them.
The best part is that you will be able to see them again throughout the cruise and even stay in
touch with them later.
Among retirees, especially those with limited mobility, cruising is particularly common. After
arriving on land, the accessibility of wheelchairs and mobility aids may change greatly-
although most cruise companies offer excursions designed for people with limited mobility.
I don’t know if these advantages outweighs the disadvantages, but cruising sure is a popular
type of holiday, but, maybe not for everyone.
I really want to go on a cruise vacation, but working there doesn’t sound to good. I feel like
there is extra hospitality and work needed in this branch, to justify the good salary. However,
if I were to work on a ship, I would like to be in charge with the organization of events. A
New Year’s Eve party on a big cruise ship doesn’t sound bad at all.
